OK we're over half way through the season but 23 games in should be half way!

This time last season we were sat in 14th position having picked up 29 points (8 wins and 5 draws) compared with this season of 3rd and 40 points (10 wins and 10 draws).

We didn't get to 40 points until 31 games in last season.



I just wanted to get thoughts on what you think has been the key reason for the improvement on last season? Improved defence/improved midfield/formation/attacking threat/specific signings or getting rid of players/lower standard of opposition?

I think we need to aim for 84 points for autos (another 12 wins and 8 draws from 21 games) and 70 for playoffs (another 8 wins and 5 draws), so lets hope the FA cup doesn't get in the way of league momentum...

Getting rid of Burge solved everything!

Oh and the fullbacks are a lot better, the centre halves look assured, the midfield is better and Godden is better than Chaplin. And of course Shipley has improved, Wakefield has stepped up, and the formation now looks settled and everyone knows their rolls, and we are benefiting from genuine competition for places.
Also the pitch is vastly improved over the Ricoh.

But overall getting rid of Burge was a MASSIVE plus compared to last season.

I put something together comparing results against the same teams last season. Team that went up top replaced by the team that was in the highest relegation place and the team that went down bottom to league 2 replaced by the playoff winners.



According to this we're only actually doing one point better than we were then. 5 of the next 6 are games we lost last time though so if we carry on recent form that will improve.



edit: just realised I still have Rotherham up next, been postponed due to the cup game.

Amazingly games 11 to 20 only yielded 11 points yet we only dropped out of the top 6 for games 12 & 13, and then game 20

MR has been given the time to build and improve. We have been really hard to beat with an improved spine. Injuries meant we haven't had a fully fit squad (and still don't). Make yourself hard to beat to you have a foundation to build on. I continue to maintain we are lucky to have him. This all in a backdrop of not playing one game at home this season.

Of course we're all aiming at automatics now and rightly so, but for the play-offs this season with 2 games less to play I'm going 71/72 ish?

Currently 40 from 23 so we have 21 games to get 32 points (34 would be almost certain I think). Therefore we can win 9, draw 7 and lose 5 to almost guarantee securing play-offs imo and I've seen nothing this season (I missed Rotherham away) to suggest that's ever on the cards to fall away so badly. I could be wrong but simply can't see it, so I'd say minimum play-offs.

To get promoted via the autos I think we can do it with 82 that's 2 points per game or something like win 12, draw 6, lose 3 - again, we don't want to get ahead of ourselves at this stage and the usual one game at a time clichés, but that certainly doesn't look unachievable to me.

Someone usually goes on a run and possibly will be closer to 90 to win the league and that might be a stretch but you never know!

I think you are on the money. It could be fewer points for the play-offs. The top half of the league offers a chance for anyone to reach the play-offs. I think we’ll finish on 81 pts. Automatic promotion this year? It would be 85 pts ish any other year.

BTW we will have to play better to achieve 81 pts. We can do it. 41 points from 21 games.

we need to put strings of wins together to put a bit of space between us and the 7th placed team

We are in a great position and we all know should be a minimum of 10 points better off, we have JJ to come in who will give another option, like a new signing. Would love MR to bring one in to bolster our challenge but doubt he will unless a last minute loan I think others in our division will see us as the ones to beat there will be hiccups ahead but I’m more than hopeful we can make the autos

Looking back at the past 5 seasons, on average a team needs around 72 points to just make the playoffs and around 90 points to get second place (autos). Since all teams are playing 2 fewer games due to Bury's expulsion, I think we need to factor that somehow into the equation. I think mid to high eighties would clinch autos for us. Think we are in a good position, but it is an awfully competitive league this year. Just have to stay healthy and sustain the momentum we have till May and try to separate ourselves from the pack.

Interesting to note that in the season we were promoted from League 2 we had 38 points after 23 games and McNulty had scored 10 goals in all games by then (same as Matt Godden).

Football is a simple game. We’ve got a better team using a system that suits, players playing mainly in their right position and now confidence is high.
Weve got form at a good time. If we can keep that up and stay clear of injuries I can’t see why we can finish 1-6th

Im not so sure the auto places will be as high as 85 to 89 (maybe for the winner) if someone now runs away with it. That 2nd place could be as low as 82 to 84 pts.

Usually by this time of the year teams are averaging 2 ppg. Or teams start to run away with it. Unusual for no team to be averaging 2 ppg. But in saying that because its so competitive it may remain tight and i still see play offs still as high as 72 points.

But your correct its awfully competitive.

We are in 3rd with a game in hand on the teams above. No team has games in hand that can catch us. If we win this game we will be in 2nd, just 1 point off top....who we just beat away 4-1. And we would be 2 points above the side presently in 2nd. Every club near the top of the table has had a drop in form. That is why we climbed the table when only playing 2 games when most played 3.

Our GD now compares OK with the other sides around us after the last 2 games. And we also have what we have missed the most this season. Someone available that can score goals. 6 goals in 2 games should be a massive confidence boost.

There is a long way to go. But we don't have anyone to fear. When was the last time we played an away game against the side clear at the top of the table and beat them so easily?

Best thing MR has done this season was to ban the players from voting in the general election.

Rumour has it he was quoted as saying.....

“every time a cross goes in a box, McFaz gives a pen away, so the players won’t be voting”
