They’ve got a gourmet type place and an osteria in the same building. The osteria is very good…wouldn’t bother with the gourmet one. We’re off to your favourite island again next week. 😎

It's genuinely cold here this morning, I'm tempted to put the heating back on. It seems like western Europe on the whole is just grey and miserable.

The weather is so utterly depressing, hardly seen any sunshine for months.

Look at the sunshine levels compared to normal (and I live in an already far rainier than Cov part of the country). There appears to be no sign of it changing any time soon either with rainfall expected to continue to be higher than average:

OK, so this report refers to last year UK getting more hot and more wet days – Met Office

But this year's data don't seem to support the trend. Here is the max temp data for the past 8 weeks (i.e. meteorological summer so far) for my local weather station (Pershore, Worcs), showing there have been just 6 days where the temperature has been at 25 degrees or above. And NO days where an "extreme high temperature" (30+ degrees) has been recorded.

What abou the daily low compared to the long term average?

Wow, 6 hot days every where but the South East last year.

What I would really like to see is some statistics showing

(a) How many days a year there is sufficient daylight sunshine to support the solar farms.
(b) How many days the wind is at the correct force /speed to support the wind farms.

To use my solar panels as an indicator, in December (the darkest month), i generated just 83.6 kWh in the whole month. Compare this with June (the sunniest month so far, but not great as summer months go, as this thread has exemplified), in which i generated 963.1 kWh for the month (of which i exported about 60% to the Grid). My panels are all virtually west-facing, so are more heavily-impacted by the early sunset in winter. Solar farms are generally built facing south so won't be as badly affected by the reduction in daylight hours.

TLDR - solar farms will always generate something, even in the depths of winter - you don't actually need the sun to be out - but there will always be a need for back-up generation (e.g. nuclear and gas).

Wind is a problem because the turbines have to be turned off if it is "the wrong sort of wind".

Cue my rant about lack of investment in tidal and river power - we're a fucking island!!!!
