Some of the interesting moves already.
Teams like Chargers & Bills making really strong moves to improve already potential SB teams.
Adams moving no surprise but Packers have put themselves in real cap hell in the near future.
AFC west could be the strongest division in the history of modern football.

And of course Vikings owners AGAIN refuse to trade Cousins then add a deal that still doesn't help the cap situation, hamstrings the new GM. Delusions that the new HC (a rookie) will make all the difference. Signing 3rd level Free agents because they have no cash. Wilfs commited to mediocrity and a fear of a losing season - strangling the football side whilst making a fortune on the franchise value side.
Got a suspicion we have our own Jack Easterby in the form of Andrew Miller (ex-baseball executive) who thinks he knows all about football now and has the ears of the ownership.

There is some absolute nonsense goes on in the boardroom in the NFL but because it's a closed contest it never gets called out. I think that's why a lot of the US investors in football are taken by surprise - you can't make these bullshit decisions and get away with it. Loads of teams hampered by their owners and their obsession with big names and big pay packets for them.

Few good owners. Mainly either in it for the money or the "prestige". Ours are dangerous because they think like fans not owners but also have a fear of failure.
A lot of Vikings fans (and pundits) wanted Cousins gone, give the new GM & HC a chance to rebuild and didn't mind a losing season to get it done. Now we will be between a 7-9 win team yet again, possibly get a pointless 7th seed widcard place and be drafting midrounds against next season - still stuck with Cousins. Only time Cousins ever wins is in contract talks.

Watson to the Browns then. 5 years $230m. 3 firsts and a couple more to Houston.

Browns are going to be a serious contender now surely. They've done a great job turning that franchise round.

230 million fully guaranteed probably swung it!!

Trade value not extortionate for a franchise QB when they've got so many high round picks still on rookie deals.

For a cap system sport teams are increasingly looking really short-term win-now. Going to see a lot of different teams win Superbowls over next few years as winners struggle to hold rosters together as players want to get paid.
Shows value of this system that any team can rebuild over a comparatively short period -Browns,Buccs, Bengals all current examples.

Only fly in the ointment for the Browns is how long NFL decide to suspend Watson for this season. AFC looks so strong 4 / 5 games out to knock them out of contention real quick for this season

I really thought he would go to the NFC simply for an easier route to the big game.

AFC so is so incredibly stacked at QB now with NFC just having Brady, Rodgers and maybe Stafford.

Going to be good AFC teams not even making the wildcard.
The balance switch is hard to explain other than AFC having drafted more starting QBs recently (and the cap advantage is gives).
Interesting to see how Chiefs go this year now Mahomes has a genuine cap hit. Bills & Chargers using that QB salary cap to really strengthen this season. Now Broncos & Browns take advantage of their cap space (lots of really good young players on rookie contracts) to bring in franchise QBs on big money.
Be curious to work out the average age of starting QBs in the 2 conferences - bet there's a 5 or 6 year difference in the AFC's favour.

Sure that's why Brady has come back (and why Rodgers really didn't want to move) as it's hard to see past 3 NFC teams - Rams, Packers & Buccs. Also why Packers have crippled themselves to win this season.

I'm a sad bastard so actually put it together. 2021 starters instead of the coming year as it may change with the draft etc.

3.5 years difference between conferences

Chiefs trying to work around the salary cap issue by paying the quarterback and just surrounding him with rookie contracts. Wonder how that’s going to pay off.

I did wonder if we’d see any teams building a great roster and the plugging a QB in every few years.

It's the "dream". Build a roster then find that rookie QB contract. Browns thought they had done it with Baker. Now paying a fortune for Watson and that roster will fall away over next 2 years.
Jaguars, Dolphins and Jets now throwing bug money at roster based on rookie QB contracts.
But teams killing themselves by overpaying other positions. Chargers killed the DE market with Bosa, WR market spoiling with Hopkins and now Adams contracts. Drags up the cost of middle ground talent and kills roster cap.

I know they’re all after the dream on a cheap deal.

What I’m trying to get at is will a team take the 5 year cheap deal and trade an elite QB to keep the rest of the roster together and try to hit lucky on a rookie every 4/5 years.

It's the wage rises in other key postions that are jeopardising things as well. The money for pass rushers (28-30m) , tackles (20m) and cornerbacks (20m) was moving at a quicker rate than for QBs. Teams now paying guards 15+ m a season. Also why nobody pays running backs any more - can always find one that can do an okay job.
Chiefs "lost" Hill because the Adams / raiders deal took too far out of what they thought they were going to extend for. Mahomes contract now going to really bite and we'll see is it worth paying that much money when you can't put pieces around him - already couldn't put out a defense last couple of seasons. Bills and Packers in must win seasons now as QB cap hits really bite them from next year.
Stafford was good but not elite. His contract was still around 25m a year until they just extended him. The market (rather any elite talent) puts him in the 40m bracket now. But he went into a good roster. Rams got a couple of years left then the lack of draft picks plus cap is going to hammer them.

The odd ball is Brady who has continually taken average contracts to help Pats then Buccs build rosters.

Counter argument is Browns & Broncos.
Browns have built a roster and taken the number 1 pick for a QB. They've had to give up and pay a huge price in cash and picks to get Watson. Again almost a win now situation as they'll start losing some really good players (former high draft picks) after this season as won'tbe able to afford to keep them.
Broncos kept going cheap qbs or 1st round picks and again have had to bite the bullet and bring in Wilson to try and win now before their roster starts to break down.

Apparently broke down on a motorway and then went to walk across it at about 6am.

Based on the sort of guy he seemed to be I bet they’ll be doing a toxicity report.

Going to be an interesting draft. Not so many elite players, plenty of decent ones. as is becoming the norm some deep positional classes, some shallow ones - strange how these vary from year to year.

Vikings can't help themselves trading for the sake of trading despite new GM. Trading within division just naive though.

Washington I thought we’re being smart moving a few places down to recoup the Wentz picks but it feels like they’re reaching everywhere.

Kinda of liked your picks. Not flashy but 3 high ceiling picks. Dotson is a big assist for Wentz and Maclaurin. Mathis a beast who really stepped up last year - along term replacement for Payne if his contract becomes an issue. Robinson a good RB and if he improves his catching could be really good.

I don’t mind the picks it’s just the time you’re taking them. They each feel like they could have been taken slightly later with a bit of draft magic.

I’m hoping Landon Collins returns now because there is such a aping hole at LB/S.

It's a strange draft. Flat quality from almost halfway down 1st to near of the 3rd. Easily argue there's 9 or 10 1st rounders who wouldn't normally be 1st round picks.
Lot of teams going for perceived need over BPA. Patriots taking Strange who was consistently graded as a 3rd rounder!!
Arguably best player in draft was Hamilton and he slipped due to being a safety. Dotson best WR2/3 in draft going above over WR1s because you have Maclaurin.
Quite a few potential starting LBs left.

I’m no expert but based on what people were saying before draft about certain players it looks like Jets have had a good one so far. I don’t know about their squad depth but appear to have done some good business if drafts are NFL ready

Jets had a great draft but with 3 1sts they should do :)

The whole draft process confuses me. Not the concept, teams get to choose from the talent pool from lowest rank team to highest,. Its all the trading, and that players may be traded multiple times.

E.g. 6th draft pick Arnold Ebiketie picked by Carolina Panthers, traded to New York Jets, who then traded him to New York Giants, who then traded him to Atlanta Falcons.

As they don’t have a transfer market then third is a sort of substitute. Teams are set by the salary cap and aren’t allowed to pay for players so the way they adjust is by trading picks and players or each other.

A team close to winning the super bowl will trade away their picks fora player they think will take them over the edge whereas teams who are miles away will try and hoard picks to rebuild.

The players are also signed onto 4/5 year rookie contracts at a set rate when they’re drafted. These contracts offer them no protection to being traded. Only very few superstars have a no trade clause. You can turn up to work on a Monday and being told you’re moving from New York to Kansas because you’ve been traded and your option is to do it or retire.

It's the picks that are traded - not the players. Each team gets 1 pick per round. These picks can then used as capital to exchange for other picks or for players (instead of our transfer fees).
eg Vikings traded their 12th & 46th picks to Lions for their 32nd, 34th & 66th picks. Then Vikings traded that new 34th pick to the Packers for their 53rd & 59th picks. Green Bay had originally got the 53rd pick when they sold/traded a player (Adams) to the Raiders.
Several systems used to value each pick so that trades can be reasonably balanced for both sides

Not sure he's even going to take the field this season now. This issue just gets bigger and bigger.
