If this club could have several decent to good years with another promotion , I honestly believe we would have some of the best away fans in England (not that I don’t really think that anyway )

Leeds, in comparison, have a population of around 500k, have won 3 league titles, competed in a Champions League semi final and been in a European cup final. Needless to say, have owners that aren't SISU and are competitive in the championship.
I think, putting what we've been dragged through for well over a generation, that to still have an away following that we have is outstanding.
A good away following isn't always just about how many people you can take. Its can you still take them in the lowest league, week in week out, after numerous relegations, being moved to Northampton, court case after court case. Still, to turn up in numbers, making the noise we do is an absolute credit to our support.

Think the fact its been so shit for so long is why we have such a good bunch of away fans.

Lets face it to support this club at all you have to put up with a lot, to travel all round the country is real dedication when we've had some appalling away form in recent years.

As we saw recently with Sunderland's visit more fans isn't necessarily a good thing.

Metropolitan area of 2.6 million people .

They should have tremendous support tbh

Our core of 1000 is as good as any in the country. You recognise the same people every week who devote their lives to the club.

Make no bones about it, when Cov reach any kind of Wembley match the FA are buzzing!! I’m pretty sure no one at our current level sells tickets the way we do down there

Who are the others ?

Leeds were the Man Utd or Man City in their dominant era , with multiple titles and even had a film made about them! We battled relegation for most of our top flight era and won an FA cup, with pretty much fook all from there on ( save for the ‘entertainers season’ ) where we were the underdogs done good

To get new generations hooked you need a bit more than that. Thankfully in the last couple of seasons we have had a smaller cup final win and promotion from league 2 ... with a really enthusiastic parent that’s enough to help get the kids engaged but it has to continue to keep building

Sunderland and Newcastle would be in there also I would guess? Man City as United aren’t turning up!

Bradford and Leicester are both larger one club cities. Think we're 4th largest with either Newcastle or Sunderland next.

Agree to an extent but there must be 10 other teams within 40 miles

Plymouth Portsmouth Norwich Ipswich Newcastle Sunderland Cardiff. Swansea etc don’t have such competition for support

Newcastle's population is skewed by not having gateshead, which is the same just the other side of the river, not included in the numbers.

Which side have the best attendance to population ratio? (its not a quiz question, I don’t know either)

Burnley must be pretty high. Town population of 73,000 with an average attendance of 18,000

I thought the fans were superb yesterday, the noise was tremendous, and I was pleased to see that the support was particularly strong after we conceded. Good to see the support for Burge as well.

I’m sorry to bring up a negative, but I do wish our fans would focus on supporting our team, rather than belittling opposition supporters. When we sing ‘your support is f******* s***’ and Southend’s a s*** hole etc, for one thing,we’re wide of the mark. People who turn up week in and week out to support teams like Southend, knowing that they’ll lose more games than they win, and that they’re almost certain to spend their whole life watching league 1/2 football (and perhaps even a trip to the National League!) are, to my mind, proper football supporters. They’re not glory hunters, they support their local team, as we do.

I know that football is tribal, and I enjoy the cut and thrust atmosphere at football matches. Although I want us to get promotion to the Championship, and ultimately the Premier League, I have enjoyed over the past few years, visiting grounds like Southend, Grimsby, Southend, Accrington, and enjoying the welcome we generally get, from proper football supporters.

We’re winning games at the moment, and it’s great to see the type of attacking football we’re playing, and overall, I agree with other posters that the support was fantastic. It wouldn’t hurt, however, to remember where we’ve been over the past few seasons, and to exercise a little humility, instead of getting ahead of ourselves, and maybe thinking we’re better than we are.

Agree with all of this. I have enjoyed Southend, Rochdale, Accrington, Morecambe etc...talking to their fans and sharing experiences. They have no real expectation of playing at a higher level than they do yet follow their teams through thin and thinner.
Our fans in our be main are second to none and we more than anyone else should recognise true football fans

I think we’re the 3rd largest City with one club ‘behind Leeds and Bradford, although
That would be measured by city population only and not contiguous urban area.
If you went on population of the urban area we’d also be behind Newcastle, Leicester,
Middlesbrough and possibly Brighten

I gave you a like for the word contiguous, which I had to look up the meaning of. I like having to do that now and then!!
