I think the point otis was making is the automatic assumption that we will face Sweden or Switzerland and that we shouldn’t assume the Columbia will be an easy pass. One game at a time
Yeah, exactly.

I wasn't moaning, I was just advocating taking one game at a time and on paper, Japan look the easier opposition.

Colombia won't be an easy pass, but if we want to go far having to beat a team like them should be part of the deal anyway.

There was panic and a bit of an overreaction, so please don't try and backtrack. It was widespread and I'm not actually signalling anyone out. I can understand why that was. My point at the time was if someone had said we had to beat Colombia and Switzerland to reach the semi-finals, people would be thinking that gave us a decent chance. I'm not getting carried away, I think Colombia will be 50/50. It's the fact that Spain are realistically the only hard team who should be standing between us and the final, and even they look shakey. They might even go out as it is going, then it really starts to look tasty.

To avoid France, Argentina, Uruguay, Portugal, Brazil and Croatia is an absolute no brainer. Having to play Colombia as part of that deal is really no big deal in comparison.

We just have to perform now. We need to beat Colombia and give it everything we have got.

If Russia win here then our route to the final is
Colombia
Sweden/Switzerland
Russia/Croatia/Denmark

I’d have snapped your whole arm off for that pre tournament.

Exactly.

It's what I have been trying to say for ages.

It's not even that this side is slightly favourable than if we had finished first. It's a different world entirely.

I thought Ramos had clamped Russian defenders arm initially but there was holding by the Russians also

Not counting my chickens though. I am really anxious about this Colombia game.

Absolutely. I am very nervous too.

If we can get through that game we will have almost hit our expectation for the tournament so it will feel a bit better. With an easier opponent in the next round I think we will then be able to start marching on.

I hope we don't go out against Colombia, but I think that really is the biggest game we've had in a really long time.

If ever a team should learn a lesson about getting the ball in the box. Actually pleased for the Russian people (and I never thought I'd be saying that!)

Not backtracking one jot.

Nowt to backtrack on.

Let's all hope England now perform on Tuesday. We've all been here before haven't we and they have let us down so many times.

Hopefully this time will be different and we can win the game and look a very good side in the process.

Anyone still think Southgate made the wrong call for the Belgium game?

Yep.

The toughest route England can face now is probably Colombia/Sweden/Croatia to a WCFinal.
As a betting man I'd rate that Evens * 4/6 * Evens
Never have a better opportunity.

It's a No from me !
Ah, but you have to understand my stance. :)

1. I find it entirely more satisfying when we beat the best teams. Greatest feeling ever when we beat Germany 5-1.

2. I want us to meet the best teams to show we can compete with them (did Iceland fear anyone they came up against?).

3. I have had confidence from the start that we are capable of beating anyone.

4. I always had a sneaky suspicion that Mexico might well beat Brazil anyway and I also had the same feeling about Russia over Spain and Mexico over Germany.

If ever two sides deserved to go out. Spain too slow in the build up no one prepared to attack the penalty area with ball at feet. Russia couldn't put three passes together and penalties were the only way they were going to get shots off.

How hauling two Spanish players to the floor wasn't a penalty I will never know. Let's remember the Russian own goal was due to their defender being more focused on fouling the Spanish player on the far post than looking at the ball. If ever two sides deserved to go out in one game, that was the game.

was saying for a long time before, the belgium defeat was the way forward
We will never have a better chance to reach a world cup final
potentially
Colombia/ Switzerland/ Russia or Croatia

and reach a final against a team who will have been through much harder games

You posted numerous posts saying we should have sent out a strong side we’ve lost momentum avd we would play Spain in the semis anyway?

I said we could play Spain the semis. Yes, we should have sent out a stronger side I felt.

I'm sure I didn't say we've lost momentum either. I believe I said you can lose momentum after over a year without defeat.

Yep. That's exactly what Mark Clattenburg has just said. He said no pen. Ramos holding the Russian player too. Both had a hold of each other.

He dismissed the Pique one.
