Good discussion in the pub the other day which was ironic seeing we were discussing addictions. One bloke said alcohol is the worst, while another reckoned it was drugs, but then again what about gambling ? I've lost two good mates through drink problems, and my son although he won't admit it has a cannabis habit. In the end any addiction is bad. Any thoughts on this ?

Addictions.... I've not had alcohol for 5 years 2 months and 3 days. It nearly killed me. Then there's drugs, smoking, the obvious ones. However, sugar, caffeine are just as bad. All owned by these big firms and advertised as good for us. But actually leads us into addiction of some form. Not only is the individual getting hurt, but the family and friends are really hurt as they feel powerless to help. I'm not into all this nanny state crap, however, I believe kids should be made aware of Addictions in school.

Wasn't there scientific research that concluded it was alcohol?
I'd agree with that as my mate although diabetic carried on drinking and dropped dead in his mid fifties. But my lad spends far too much money on dope but thinks it's no big deal, even though he's always skint !

Any form of addiction that the individual is unable to regulate or control is destructive to their life. The most dangerous drugs in terms of misery and destruction are heroin and alcohol, IMO.

I don't drink or smoke, but I think I would be quite happy watching TV, or people exercise, or people having sex.

Yeah I seem to remember that, and I think it was down to being the most socially acceptable and alcoholism can come in a lot of different forms.

You might be thinking of the work David Nutt did. He was the governments advisor and wanted things classified based on actual evidence of the harm they caused. Alcohol was right up there (after heroin and cocaine) and above things like acid and ecstasy.

He got the push when he stated, IMO correctly, that classifications were being made on a political rather than scientific basis.

I'm sure any form of addiction is a terrible thing to combat
But temptation is everywhere I mean watch a football game with out seeing an advert for a bet you can put on at the touch of a button, or beer
A friend of mine had a massive addiction to fruit machines you could go out for a drink with him and he'd did off to play them or even worse you could be sat talking and he'd constantly watch other people on the machines and he'd try to work out when the they would pay out

My dad always said as long as you control it and it doesn't control you it's not a problem

I've had a lot of experience around addiction, even lost a couple of friends to it. The conclusion I've come to is that it isn't the substance that is the problem it's the person. Some people are able to take incredibly addictive substances and just drop them when they need to whereas some people will get incredibly hooked on mild things and let it ruin them. I think there is a big problem with thinking of drug takers as criminals where it should be treated as a public/mental health problem.

I agree with your comments as the mind is a powerful thing, but used properly it can overcome all sorts of problems.I too have lost a couple of good mates who lost control of their drinking, they thought they could control it but sadly they either didn't accept they had a problem,or just thought sod it I enjoy drinking so what's it got to do with anybody else ? I like a drink but have eased up over the years,as it was getting me into lots of bother, but I have chosen to do it because I wanted to. Maybe that is the key to addiction, you have to WANT to change ?

It's all the same man. I had a friend who was addicted to heroin for a while, that was nasty. I know loads of stoners and a couple of alcoholics, a few coke heads, but smack heads are the worst, they'll steal, fuck you over, they turn into right nasty little shits.

But ultimately, it's all self-medication because they can't handle life. I say this from both experience and research. This is a fascinating article on addiction that can really open your eyes:
