My first game of the Russell Slade era and taking the away the joy and euphoria of reaching Wembley the lack of skill and general all round ability shoes my why we are becoming adrift at the bottom of the league BUT get Stokes fit, add Stevenson possibly Bigiriamma and even a three-quarter fit Yakubu we might have enough to grind out some results, then there's the two other trialists and Kwame Thomas too.
Last night we battled, can't deny that but there are too many just not up to football league dtandard. I find it amazing a player Stevenson, who we turned down three big bids for in January only makes the bench strange to say the least l would assume he would have made the Brentford line up.
Over to you Mr Slade now let's see how good you are !

Thing is, RB, we brought in Folivi and Vernam, both got injured.

Missing from our normal line-up last night were Foley, Rawson, Willis and Clarke, plus the two mentioned above.

Last night's line-up would never be our line-up for a league game.

Put Stevenson in instead of Rose, bring in Clarke and Rawson and have either Folivi or Yakubu up top (or even both of them) and you have quite a different team altogether.

It's midfield and attack where we have been most lacking. No luck at all up front with the injury problems and maybe this Gogic could be the answer to our prayers in midfield. A strong, no nonsense, defensive midfielder who can win the ball and then give it to the likes of Stevenson to pull the strings.

I am sure Stevenson was rested following his injury, for the campaign ahead in the league.

Don't think we can judge how bad we are as a team based on last night, as that wasn't our first team by a long chalk.

I don't think the players Slade has brought in will move us forward at all. However happy to be proved wrong. Clarke and Beavan are the only two I'm impressed with and they aren't enough. January is a crap window to be fair to Slade.

Its great we're going to Wembley but we need have top 6/promotion form from here on in to get to the 50 point mark. This team are no way near good enough to do that.

watched the re-run this morning and the commentators quoted Ainsworth that at this level football is mainly about psychology as players' fitness & ability are roughly the same.
Having been fairly comfortable 1st half the introduction of Akinfenwa brought immediate panic from the manager down before he had even kicked a ball and the team seemed to think Wycombe had just brought on Ronaldo or something.
Once Turnbull had realized about 15 mins in that Akinfenwa wasn't superman (and we got someone to stand in front of him as well) he played him pretty well.
What was disappointing was how we just surrendered so much midfield ball and let them pump crosses in when everyone knows RCC's handling is dodgy. How that hasn't been coached out of him after 2 years is a complete mystery.
I think after their goal went in everyone was expecting them to equalize including the team.
There is ability in this team but the levels of confidence & self-belief are really quite poor. Slade addresses that and we might still stay up. (and gets a decent goalkeeping coach to sort RCC).

Thing is, in that second half, without Beavon we became totally one dimensional, with only Tudgay up there all alone. That's why the ball kept coming back at us and we were hanging on.

There was no outlet for us besides Tudgay.

I thought the addition of Jodi Jones in the second half showed quite clearly that he isn't up to league 2 standards, let alone league 1. He spends all his time running into the opposition and falling over He has no strength, no tenacity. Moans and complains about the opposition, and has no positional sense whatsoever. Clearly the "hostile" home atmosphere got to him and he couldn't cope with it.
He represents everything that Dion Kelly Evans isn't. We should get rid asap.

Hr's not full grown yet (19?) If he was mid 20s I might agree, I still think he can develop.

The reason we started to surrender in midfield was that Rose dropped and he and Turnbull worked together to stop Akinfenwa. To be fair, until they paired up on him(sandwiched him for headers), he won every header. I think its credit to Slade that he reacted and rectified the problem.

How many time have we seen opposition players take the ball and draw fouls at the back end of games to kill time and earn the win. He did that fairly well last night.

have to agree OP. was kinda bitter sweet last night. on one hand you had a performance eof real heart and a win that took us wembley

but flip side was a ugly ugly performance, not enjoyable to watch, never kept possession forl onger than 6 seconds. better teams will beat us easily it seems. like they have been doing in league since slade took over.

I take on board all said above and to be honest forgot about Clarke and Rawson. IF we can get those in, Stokes and Willis there could be hope of getting a run together need to win our home games though
