Any thoughts on its efficacy?Purpose?

Not sure why we need one other than to warn is that we are about to get shit loads of trouble coming our way.

When did we need anything like this but didn’t have the technology?

It also can be used for "flooding in your area" and things like that.

It is useful, can help and there's not many downsides.

Other countries have used them for ages.

People moaning about it are complete idiots. It’s the modern day equivalent of air raid sirens. It’s there for a reason, hopefully it’ll never be needed but it’s got to be a good thing.

I was in BandM when it went off and it was like the fire alarm went off. So many devices making the same noise was pretty impressive and effective.

Some phone owners didn't get the notification.

What I deduced from all that was that we have all been put through a selection process and those who received the alarm, will get to survive a nuclear attack and those who didn't, will die.

After all, if they didn't get the notification, they will be oblivious to the fact that they have 3 minutes to run for cover.

I think this is a good idea and as others have said, its common in other countries and I'm surprised it has taken so long to be implemented.

I'm still waiting for my notification though so clearly the system needs a little work, unless I'm deemed surplus to requirements so don't need warning of any impending doom.

It’s an age thing. We didn’t get it and 2 people in Rugby who are Baby Boomers didn’t. So the master plan is working!

First time I heard one in the Netherlands it felt like the start of The Purge. Depends what it is used for here really. To let you know someone is running rampant with an AK-47 and stay inside - would appreciate the warning. A meteorite is going to wipe out earth in 15 minutes - not so much.

The issue is that once again, the company behind the work for this is that of Sunak's extended family. Just like with the pandemic - dodgy deals on pharmaceutical and PPE companies galore.... It doesn't sit right with me, and far too many people are naïve on this.

How are they planning to do it for terror attacks etc? Will they be able to do it based on GPS location or is it done by phone mast?

They can def do it by location. In Canada they use the same system for missing kids and send a local alert out

which of course raises the question of why, as with the test and trace app, we haven’t used existing off the shelf systems that are known to work

A bit like with Covid, a lot of the information is buried or 'ignored', but if you follow the money you won't be that far away.

- Fujitsu (the company involved in the post office scandal) are awarded the contract.
- This is also the same Fujitsu that sued the NHS for 700 million pounds.
- Fujitsu's previous chairman, Simon Blagden, was put on the UKHSA advisory board by the government, and is now Chair of Building Digital UK which works under Digital Secretary Nadine Dorries.
- Infosys is Sunak's father-in-law's company.
- Fujitsu regularly outsource work to Infosys, and there has been a lot of investment between the two companies.

I made many similar pointers regarding the pharmaceutical companies and PPE, which were laughed out the room at the time. Those people are absolutely silent now. It could be a conspiracy here of course, but the tories have too much history for my liking. They're corrupt as fuck.

I confidently bet that there is some money being handed over to people in cosy positions somewhere along the line here too.

Dig a bit deeper? She hasn’t been Digital Secretary for more than six months now.

Even if you can prove that this Fujitsu deal was all a smokescreen to bring in Infosys (and I assume you can?), the idea that Dorries was working overtime to do a financial favour for Sunak sounds fanciful at best. They can’t stand each other.

Oh right, because some appointments and deals happened a few months ago - it doesn't count? I'm not sure if you are 1) gullible, 2) projecting, or 3) just on the wind up, as considering you are supposed to be a journalist you've had your pants pulled down here. If you knew she was previously in that position you would have stated it rather than crosschecking the first google search that came up when you imputed her name. It isn't even the smoking gun here though really, and it's a very weak counter argument to be focussing on her (there's many more relevant people involved), which suggests probably option two, deliberate projection. Maybe a sprinkle of 1 & 3.

I'm not going to try and change your mind. You're a big boy who should be able to deduce a pattern of very strange decisions within the government yourself. It's those same kind of patterns that took place during the pandemic, and I've never seen so much backtracking and hiding from the people that were screeching and calling others conspiracy theorists after that.

I'm absolutely confident this will turn out to be the same somewhere down the line.

TBF Fujitsu appears to have won a competitive procurement for this, albeit we don't know how many bids there were. In theory there is a pool of 192 suppliers that could be invited to bid.

Unfortunately there is little currently that can be done in relation to a perceived poor track record in previous contracts so they can't be debarred from bidding and in any event there are two parties to a contract and it isn't always wholly down to the supplier.
