The World Doesn't Stop Because Marlon King Left

Coventry City manager Andy Thorn has said that losing Marlon King is not the end of the world.

Speaking to the CT after King's departure to Birmingham City on a three year deal, worth a reported £15k a week, Thorn said:

"He's moved on but it's not like we've lost Wayne Rooney or Alan Shearer.

"Yes he would have been good for us with his goalscoring but the way things have been done, we are probably better off without him.

"As far as I concerned, we played Norwich who got promoted and he missed a hat-ful in a 2-2 draw, we played Reading at home and he missed a load of chances and never scored.

"We're not a one man team so I am not absolutely devasted and at rock bottom because I was half expecting it. On one level, I was surprised because he said he would stop but its not the end of the world.

"The world doesn't stop because Marlon King's left - there are plenty more fish in the seas that I have got my bait dangling by at the moment.

"Everything is in line and I've got different things bubbling away and ready to press the button on.

"I'll get someone in who will fit into the club and score goals for us. But I think Lukas Jutkiewicz will have a massive season for us I really do. The Duke was only three goals behind Kingy last year. I have got options to play Gary McSheffrey at centre forward and I have got ones I want to bring in.

"I was half expecting Marlon to go anyway and although I was disappointed I had prepared for it. I'm sure whoever we bring in will be young and hungry and that's what we are looking for because we have a track record of taking young players and improving them and the way we are going to play will improve us anyway."

AT will sort it out and get the players heads on the job in hand and as far as im concerned the way the team played under him chances will be created and taken by the next player who puts the shirt on... In a strange way this event could create a seige mentality with the ones left as all are writing us off and if i was AT thats what i would be pushing....

AT always says the right thing. Not in a kind of 'tell the fans what they want to hear' way either. I supported Marlon 100% when he was here - now he's gone, I couldn't give a flying one about him - we have to get on with the task in hand.

Did'nt Thorn come out and say that he had a phone call from King last week,having a laugh with him as King said "looks as though your stuck with me for the next 2 years Boss" and also stated that King would play a massive part for us next season,and what a major signing it was!!!!...now he's picking out certain games in which King missed a few chances!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Amazing!!

I think AT comments are a bit childish, every time I saw King play he was 10 paces ahead of the game and could of scored a lot more if he had more quality around him. So to make out he is a nobody is a bit daft although we are all a bit peed off about what has happened.

All he is doing is trying to give the fans and by the sounds of it himself some optimism for next season, it sounds as if he is trying to convince himself as well as fans that there will be life after King rather than moping around feeling sorry for himself
Also at a club like Coventry we need everyone to be pulling in the same direction and is King someone we want in the dressing room?
I am gutted to see King leave like I expect 99% of fans were and all the staff were but the club need to stop feeling sorry for themselves and move on. AT and the club could spend the next week arguing on who's fault it was that the agreement wasn't fulfilled but that would get us no closer to a replacement.

AT is entitled to say this IMO! He's been shat on from a height by someone he had some trust in. And he is absolutely correc that no 1 player is bigger than the club, and no 1 player makes a team!

In Andy I trust to get us a viable replacement!

I think that AT is right. The club isn't all about one player and we have had better players than him leave before and it hasn't ended the world. Although it always disappointing to loose a player with obvious qualities I think that King is a player that had a lot of negatives to counter the positives. As CCFC says above it is more important that everyone at the club is pulling in the same direction, AT gives the impression of bringing together a united dressing room and is King the sort of person to support that.

We know that AT has a history of spotting decent players and so I would be comfortable that he has some good ideas about who he could bring in to enhance the squad, of course that is always going to be effected by the financial restraints we have but a squad of young, hungry players has been a proven successful recipes for other clubs.

It is time to move on from King, he has shown his true colours and they are not sky blue so there is no point dwelling over it. In any case I think it was perfectly obvious that King was never going to sign for City. Clearly the potentially interested clubs were taking too long so King tells City he will sign, they report it in the media and this gees up the other interested clubs. King was probably hoping that there would be more than just Birmingham to choose from but in any event earned himself a nice big pay rise. There is nothing the club could have done and the ridiculous statements that King and his agent have come out with prove that. Having already known he had questionable morals this has jus proved the type of guy he is and personally I think we are better off without him.

We now all just need to focus on next season (and hopefully we will finish above blues )

AT was absolutley right in saying theres life after Marlon and the club isnt about one player,just thought how he mentioned King missing a few chances in certain games was a bit silly.

To me AT sounds really really peed off with how King treated him personnally,and the club and us the fans.
As someone else has said,this could be a defining moment for the club and if he brings in younger lads our future is brighter longer term.
Lets get right behind AT and never mention that idiot again.

Andy! no one's going to Think any less of you if you admit that losing Marlon King. is a major setback to your game plan for next season.
WE all saw what he can do, his presence on the field was an enormous boost not only for the fans but for the team as a whole,
and to say its not like like losing a" Rooney or a shearer" does you no favours, because to this club, that's exactly what we have lost. an enormous talent in this league.
WE need closure now on this disappointment, Yes! he gave his word then broke it, stuck two fingers up to the fans he'd bonded with, in a diabolical breech of trust, but to highlight his missed chances, in order to demerit his contribution, is plain and simple "Sour Grapes"
we're all gutted Andy, no shame in that.

I agree, I think he said his comments though to try and lift the fans, players and club and try and lift the demoralised feel that has been surrounding the club the last few days

Agree with everything he said. Marlon did miss some sitters towards the end, remember. It didn't get mentioned much as any criticism of King was always jumped on as being "ah, so you never wanted him here any way"! I know I always tippy-toed around the fact that he had a few ropey games, and whilst he was a superb player for us most of the time, I only ever rated him a very good Championship striker-that's what his career record says.

I think he was lucky to only get 2 reds last year as in a few games early on he was just looking for a fight-remember the time Platt got booked instead of him in a case of mistaken identity?! In some games later on his touch was poor by his previous standards and he gave away the ball with a few hospital passes that Jordan Clarke would have been slaughtered for if he'd made them. Nevermind that there is plenty of evidence to suggest that whilst he gave us an extra 20% on the pitch with his quality, he probably took away at least as much from other players performances given his disruptive influence in the dressing room and on the training ground.

I know this is all true, even if a lot of folk were wearing King-tinted glasses at the time, and Thorn knows it too.

I love the way Thorn is completely natural and says it how he sees it-and nearly every time, he hits the nail bang on the head. Why do you think the team were so obviously more motivated under his stewardship than we've seen them since Eric Black? His fresh, positive approach is perhaps a P.R. mans dream if you want to create the image of transparency. If Thorn has faults, it's only those that Sillett also had. That'll do me!

And yeah, it doesn't bode well for Flash Freddy..serves him right really: I kept faith and thought he really deserved a run until his last 5-6 "efforts" last season. He made Stern John look like a dynamic and hard-working player in those showings.

i dont think we'll buy a new striker we have got attacking options to fill in eastwood ( i think we should give him a chance) platt (has good height but doesn't move) roy o'donnaven (he has'nt had a chance to prove himself he has only played one match for us) shaun jeffers( if he signs, young and could be the next sturidge) so we have plenty of options to chose from to fill in and we dont have a lot of money.

Yeah I'd rather see a new signing or Sheff up top rather than Freddy. But I am open to him proving us wrong, and when fit he is a natural goalscorer. He just always got dropped or injured when going well and never got his confidence or fitness back. Each and every player at the club played better under Thorn than previosuly in their City careers-why wouldn't Freddy be the same? He tried him in the hole at first, that could be an option with him yet. We're probably stuck with him for another year anyway, so lets hope Thorn gets something out of him.

No-one would pay a fee for him with him being in last year of contract,i still cant believe we pad £1.2 million pounds for him,after scoring a huge 3 goals in 37 games for Wolves,they still got there money back!!!!!!!!!!!!...we can only dream of spending that sort of money now,if we do get the chance again,lets hope we dont waste it again!
