Thorn: Players coming back early and change of tactics (1 Viewer)

COVENTRY City are reporting back for preseason training a week earlier than their rivals in a bid to prepare for the rigours of League One football.
Manager Andy Thorn wants his players both mentally and physically in tune to tackle the challenge ahead, not least the fact that the Sky Blues will be seen as a big scalp in the division.

And the Sky Blues boss is determined to stick to his principles of playing passing football to get out of the third tier and back to the Championship at the first attempt.

“Every game will be a cup tie for the opposition so we need to be mentally strong and we need to be physically strong,“ said Thorn.

“A lot of clubs are not going back until the 9th and that's why we're going back on Sunday 1st. I don't care that it's a Sunday because we will work so hard to play the way we want to play. Because when you are playing football, you are not just passing it about, you have to be really fit.

“So the pre-season will be really tough because that gives you a base to build on. I don't want anyone to miss pre-season because we need to get ready for a whole new start.“

Thorn is particularly eager to draft in new players by the time City start back in order for them to gel with the rest of the team and get used to his style of play.

He added: “I know how I want to play next year and it will be a bit different to how we have been because we have been guided by the players we have had, so it has been difficult to do anything different. But the philosophy of playing football will always be number one.

“I’ll change our shape and hopefully it will give me a start in the pre-season with the fresh players to say this is what we’re doing and this is where our strengths are in this league. To say this is what we need to work on – it’s obvious we need to score more goals than we have before – but I wasn’t able to do that last year.

“I’m just looking forward because I know that if we get who we want to get I know what we can do.

“There’s only one thing that I want at the end of it and that’s promotion. That’s what everything will be geared to.”

Embargo will not be lifted Andy, sorry but you have to work with the same shite as last year, minus a few of the best ones. Love and kisses, sisu.

Lovely to hear him talk about promotion, such a shame we don't stant a cat in hells chance without investment.

A young, small in size and small in physique squad will not get out of this league

i think he has had them back early so he can work out how many of the under 16 squad he has to get out of school early to train with the first team to make the numbers up !!!:(:(

All sounds very positive. Anything less than promotion would have to be seen as failure really

I think promotion should be a target but the sad reality is if we dont get new blood in and not to just replace but to add, then the current squad we will get bullied in this league...

And winning the FA cup, Paintpot and League cup if AT is allowed to bring in a few players I suppose? :thinking about:

Do you think he knows something by the way he is talking though? He keeps on about players coming in, i mean certain players as though they have been told they are cov players, just need to lift embargo sort of thing. I mean he may just be dreaming, but deep down i do think he geniunly believes we will get embargo lifted and players in. He spoke of new players for pre-season. Just not sure how much is hope and how much is confidence in something that he has been told. If you think about it, sisu must realise if they do not act, then they may as well bubble us beacuse we are gone!!

Er, he's been saying that every transfer window for the past 2 years. He knows nothing.

This has been my line of thought, but who in their right mind would trust SISU to do the right thing?

SISU would make money by bringing in decent players on a free. Players on a contract have a value. A stronger squad will win more games. A winning team will sell more tickets. A winning team can get promotion. This would give us a chance of doing the same as Southampton. Then they would hit the jackpot. Or they can go the other way and leave us with a shite squad where we struggle again next season. Less tickets sold.............and so on.

But something seems different......yes i know they are lying bastards that have sold us up the river and virtually killed our club. But, i am unsure about right now. I think he does feel we will buy players, not sure why. Just do.

Unless Cody scores 40, we won't get anywhere near enough goals as it stands. I don't worry about us at the back, but up front we are very weak and that needs addressing urgently.

Of course there will be signings..... accounts will get filed eventually because they have to be...... the budget will be set because it has to be.

Just a few thoughts though

- the later the signings the less wages to be paid out pre season
- AT will have targets but if the budget is as small as I think it might be then it wont be his first choices we bring in
- The budget will be set to match the income available ..... I wouldnt bank on any funds from SISU ..... the signings will reflect this
- They wont go to sign or keep players on a high salary in any position, I reckon they will set a budget for each position that reflects the total budget and fill the squad that way..... ie signings will be position based not player value based

So yes eventually we will see some player movement, just can not see it will be of the quality we would like

cant bring myself to comment much on some the other things AT said regarding change of tactics etc - if we haven't got the players yet how do we know what is right for the squad. Just my opinion but to me AT got tactics wrong far too often last season, we were set up by him not to lose rather than to go win and it failed. Yes I accept all the lack of investment arguments but some of how we played was down to AT's decision making and overall approach wasnt it ?.

Do I have much confidence in him getting it right this coming season .... no but am trying to keep an open mind on that because he is who we have and we need him to bring an A game to the party then hope it is good enough. Right now I would settle for winning a third of our games or more for a change! .......sad thing is presently I do not have much confidence in that and I should shouldn't i ?

just my opinion

Get them back early before they get too fat. Good idea now that 'that tax' was recently dropped from Gregg's.

Anyone who EXPECTS promotion next year is a fool. If we start to reverse the losing mentality that has prevailed at the club for a decade now and maybe finish top 10, this will be a start. Anything better than this would be a wondrous bonus and happy times again for Sky Blues. Its all down to the owners though, I still imagine like myself there are 3000 people waiting for their positive first steps before committing to season tickets. We are not demanding much, an affirmation of continuity without loss of points, a few loan or free signings and bingo we all sign up, I'm sure I'm not on my own with this?!

I think thats a more than valid argument, got my ticket before the season ended but I can't blame anyone for holding out for a bit. There are some good free transfers available that could easily do a job in this league, and what we've got left as it stands isn't bad - I like Murphy and really rate Hussey and have a lot of belief for Cody's potential this coming season.
Personally it's nice to hear him talking about tactics and training rather than the complaining about lack of players - though I feel he has a right to. Credit where he's due, he's saying all the right thing and just has to have some backing now - even if it's just for wages.
To expect promotion is foolish; but there's no reason to write it off with nearly 2 months before the season starts.

To me it is very simple. Strengthen the squad where it is needed. If we are top half then wait for improvement. Bottom half then AT needs to go. No strengthening of the squad then all we can do is hope for the best.

sick of hearin the same old drivel now.while sisu are here, expect the same as last season, but only worse.i hope thorn gets the support from sisu to strengthen, but i fear that will not be the case.sisu will sell anything with a price on them, and replace with freebie's and loans.i feel if we don't make a serious challenge on promotion nxt season, and we finish around mid table, then we could be in this league,as long as we were in the championshp.we need to have a bloody good go this season, and sisu Must!! help thorn.
