ANDY Thorn has criticised former Coventry City midfielder Noel Whelan for acting unprofessionally in his bid to get a job on his coaching staff.
Whelan made it public on Twitter that he had approached the Sky Blues through a third party who had recommended him to the club's development director, Steve Waggott, as a candidate for the assistant manager's job * a post that has since been filled by his former City team-mate Richard Shaw.

Waggott met with the 37-year-old * who revealed he offered his services for just £20,000 a year * and told him he would keep him informed if any thing came up in either the first-team backroom or at the Academy but when he hadn't heard anything he claimed on Twitter that he had been treated “disgustingly“ and there was a “lack of respect“.

Thorn hit back: “I am aware of his comments and it is totally unprofessional. We went about things in the right way. We were aware of his interest but I had other options. I know Richard Shaw, who is very good, and that's the route we went down. “He'd already spoken to Steve Waggott who would have let him know if an opportunity came up within the club. It was a private conversation that was had and to go public with it and to go public with it is a joke. We won't get rail-roaded into doing anything.

“We don't conduct our business on Twitter or on any other social network and for that reason I won't be pursuing it.“

Damn right. As much as we all loved Noel Whelan as a player he's behaved like an absolute idiot over this.

Totally disagree and find it sad that someone who served the club well is given such abuse from those that obviously lead such perfect existences.

The man has moved on in life, and is now a fully qualified coach but yet people still go on about the window incident, the same people who make excuses for Thorn on the basis that his appalling record is down to SISU, and yet can offer no excuse for Whelans indiscretion when he was a lot younger and obviously immature.

Yes he expressed his views on Twitter, many wouldnt, but many do. I dont know if any of you naysayers had noticed but many footballers do now, and many other people as well. We may not agree but it seems to be the future.

At least it shows he has passion for the club, wanted to come and to succeed, i applaud him for that, and would like to see people with the same passion running our club and managing it, and in particular I am yet to see Thorn show either the same desire or interest, and yet people continually make excuses for him.

I hold nothing against Whelan, and would not have minded having him back at our club but he has been unprofessional here. If you went for a job interview at, I don't know, somewhere like BP and they had not got back to you as quickly as you hoped would you publicly announce that you have been treated "disgustingly"? No, you wouldn't because it is a foolish thing to do and would seriously damage your chances of employment.

I don't hold Whelen's passed indiscretions against him, we've all done stupid things in the past. However my 2 issues are this: -

1) airing it on twitter. I'm sorry but you just wouldnt slate a company you want to work for on twitter/Facebook, especially when they have said they'll let you know when something comes up.

2) how was he treated disgustingly? Was It simply because he didn't get the job?

Whelen was one of my favourites but I find the twitter thing too unprofessional.

I put this down to a lack of communication. Waggot seemingly thought he only had to keep Whelan informed; whereas Whelan - from the tone of his Twitter rants - interpreted it that something more tangible was available and he was only awaiting a call with regards whether he had been successful.

Whether Whelan or Waggot are telling the truth, and who's understanding is most accurate is one thing. But if Whelan was left dangling, then his frustration is understandable. Tht stated, the way he publicly articulated it wasn't very clever at all

Whelan should have kept his mouth shut. If he had to say anything it should have been "Enquired about coming on board to help the team, nothing happening at the moment" and leave it at that

All AT had to say was "there was an enquiry but we have taken a different route and wont be pursuing it at the moment"

It's not really about people claiming to be perfect or even Noel Whelan's past - if you're slagging off a potential employer on a public platform before even hearing back from them, you've only got yourself to blame. That applies to anyone really.

It might not be that foolish, I mean having worked for SISU isnt exactly a great reference on your CV at the moment.
I just hope that Carsley and Shaw come out of the experience better than the lumox we have in charge.

He was initially interested in the assistant job but after that was filled he said he wanted to be a first team attacking coach or involved in the academy

Just because there wasn't anything available at that time he has ruined his chances of ever being employed in the future whilst the current board are in charge.
