Some crazy posts on here yesterday... Which is generally why I wait till the next day when you've calmed down and collected my thoughts and reassessed.
Firstly, name me a man who could of done anything different with the car crash side???
Some key points...
We were well on our downward spiral before he came at Christmas, remember Cambridge, Oxford, Southend, Bristol Rovers when he could of took at watching brief....even the reverse fixture at Fleetwood. We were a match for no one!
Fine lines....
came so close to victories at Peterborough and Bolton... nearly a clean sheet against a side whose scored in 26 of its 27 games. With these potential 5 points were still in the pack but our belief would be higher... goals disallowed that should of stood. It's all against us.

RS has done what most wanted in changing as much playing personal as physically possible from a failing weak youthful side. With only Burge, Turnbull, Willis, Rose, Stevenson, Haynes in the starting 11 yesterday from the squad he inherited without spending a penny.

In turn this has tightened up our goals conceded which is a good thing and upped the average age and height of the squad drastically improving it from where we were giving us much more of a bite to match up most physically like we ran a huge Bolton side close with the arrival of the robust Clarke, physical Rawson and hard working Beavon.

Signings...
Signed 3 players permanently on free's and 2 on loan with a 3rd imminent. We all know he's only got the frees and loans to work with and generally January is not the ideal time to do it.

Going forwards....
I'm sure he's got a list of what he'd like to do, but within 31 days that got to be hard. It's a complete rebuild we need and no summer to do it.
Slades happy with his defensive options for now, which is likely to see a pairing of Clarke and Willis/Rawson.
Midfield he's got x2 DM's on trial which we've been desperately in need of last few games, a right winger on trial too it's clear we're not dominant in this area and Bigi/Ghadzev don't fit the bill.

The elusive striker which we all know is the vital missing link in our side all season is most likely gonna come from a loan as who's gonna let go a 10/15 goal striker now and we're highly unlikely to buy one. Vernon a fast striker with a eye for goal is due in this week. I'm sure slades looking for other options and hopefully a target man to take to load off the hardworking Beavon. I'm pretty sure we will see some arrivals in this area soon as we all no that there is insufficient goals between Beavon, Thomas, and Tudgay.
Question is will it be enough?

I do feel sorry for him in terms of there wasn't much else he could do once Beavon went off yesterday.

I'm sure he wouldn't choose Rose to play that position up front.

It was dire yesterday, but I think we do need to give him a chance this week to pull out one or two rabbits out of the hat.

If he is to play the long ball game he needs a strong, tall target man.

Don't know much about this Derby fella, but isn't he more of a play off of the target man, rather than a target man himself?

A reasoned post, some good points. Almost makes me forget about having witnessed the worst ever city side, two weeks running.

Pre Christmas the team had relegation written all over it. Posh and Bolton offered a bit of hope but with chesterfield and yesterday it looks like things are back to normal. Could a new manager make a silk purse out of a sow's ear? The idea that there's some manager out there who can turn things round for us feels like clutching at straws.

We were told that Mowbray is/was a Championship level Manager and ill-equipped to manage consistently in League One.
Slade is a tried and tested League One Manager and we are told is our best chance to get us out of the mire quickly.
I'm all for giving him a chance and seeing who else he can get through the door in January, but with no league wins yet and the 'ugly' football yesterday never looking like it was going to bring 3 pts, I'm slightly worried.

The last two games were very poor in terms of footballing performance, but we lost each game 1-0, to a cracking long range shot, and a late goal. We have to give RS time, and if we win enough games ugly to keep us in the league, then I would take that for this season.

Well look at the situation... MV inherited a side that was playing some good stuff at times, and had only lost a few but still unbeaten at home 10 games into the season. The early bounce is easy to find....
Fast forward another 12 league games after a mini revival and then crushing defeats at Charlton, Oxford and poor showings in the cup at morecambe in the cup and another damming defeat at Cambridge and Russell Slade finds himself tasked with the job of reviving a very young side crushed with confidence and limited goals.
I'm sure Slade would of achieved the same if he was taking over TM's side after 10 league games unbeaten at home too.... however he's not he's got a 3rd hand side from MV, the man we've been staying for our piss poor performances.

He needs to be given a chance, something that no football manager seems to get these days. However I have to say I just do not get the long ball tactics of the last two games when playing small forwards. I know we don't have a big target man at the moment. Surely the best thing to do then is play to the strengths of the players we do have.

I agree that it's ludicrous that people are calling for his head. The signings he has made have improved the squad drastically and I'm sure there will be a couple more before February, although I think deadline day will be busy picking up a couple of loans when we know who is still available. Still think an experienced GK is a must as Burge has improved but still doesn't fill me with confidence. The best course of action is see the season out with RS. If he keeps us up, which I doubt, then he will be seen as a saviour. Even if we go down, give him a summer and a full transfer window and pre season and see what he does then. I'm happy to win ugly if it means winning. We always played nice football under TM and it's proved it didn't work at this level. Play ugly and see what happens if he signs a couple more in the same vein as Clarke and Beavon then maybe I could be more optimistic.

I did not see any difference between both sides in the last three matches? Appalling football this must be the worst league anywhere for football. We as football fans must be trying to relate the football we see being played in the premiership and expect that it can be played in league one. Passing, running off the ball, playing for each other!!! NAH! We need a team that like each other and have some kind of comradship . Just need to look at the fact that Fleetwood are 4th proves that point because their football is just as bad as ours.

The problem is quite clearly that we do not have good enough players. On Saturdays performance you would be hard pressed to find one player who is good enough for league one. That side will struggle in league two next season no matter who is manager. Not much a manager can do when the players are struggling to control a ball or play a short pass without giving it away

And if he can't do it, you have to ask who could. We've tried just about every different type of manager, and we still go downwards.

I'd give Slade next season too, regardless. He's come in to a situation not of his making, and we need some kind of planning.

You can't play long ball and then justify decisions like:
  • Bringing a ball playing footballer back into midfield like Stevenson
  • Playing two tiny strikers up front
  • Going 5 at the back with a player who has not played full back all season, never mind wing back, and cannot cross for shit
  • Rose as a #10
People know we are on the verge of dropping to L2 for the first time in decades and that games are running out - so when crazy decisions like that are made, questions are immediately asked. The fans are desperate and their reactions are reflecting that.

If you was a Chairman or a manager of another team would you want your prize youngsters confidences shooting to pieces..the task he has is immense we all know this, I suspect the game plan is damage limitation because we are firing blanks up front in the hope we can nick a goal like other teams seem to keep doing

Oddly I struggle to blame the players that much for Saturday, if Slade's decision was to lump the ball 60 yards continually in hope the Fleetwood defence made an error / Beavon or Thomas could force them into an error then I'm sorry that is like I said on Saturday and I stick by it the worst game plan I have EVER seen by a manager of this Football club!

Not saying sack him but my goodness what I witnessed Saturday was pathetic!

my thoughts exactly if Slade turns out to be the wrong man we are fucked without the owners changing their approach on running the club.

I honestly think that Fleetwood and Scunthorpe are the 2 worst team to visit the ricoh this season. 2nd and 4th in the league says it all. If you can win ugly you will gather momentum and points. People want fast passing and flowing football, how did that work last season? Did it win us promotion? The teams that do well and get out of this league bully other teams and win ugly with long ball punts

Saturday was just awful. But blaming any manager is missing the mark by a mile.

Mark Robins put together that should have got us promoted, but he fucked off to Huddersfield and Pressley came in and the club fucked off to Northampton.
The best players were then sold.

Tony Mowbray put together the basis of a team good enough to get promoted, it was built around young players on loan, this team sat top of the table at Xmas and a small amount of investment was needed to push the team on, despite a large amount of funds coming the owners way (Maddison) we got Darius Henderson and the promotion attempt floundered. The best players were then sold or went back to their parent clubs.

The SISU model imposed on the club makes promotion almost impossible. People say support the club not the owners, I do but the owners have taken the club to where it is at. I no longer can see past SISU and Fisher I see them as CCFC, I doubt I will be at the Ricoh again if they are still in charge.

Whoever comes in has an immense task, that applied to the last three or four managers at least.

Although I have my doubts about Slade he deserves time like anyone else. Nobody will get this club out of this rut without domes peaks and troughs. I said when Mowbray arrived it was a three to four year job and nothing has changed.

The problem any manager has, is on our budget you can't build a team in one or two transfer Windows. Especially January when you will be lucky to pick up two decent players.

Slade has until the end of the season to move us forward and that doesn't necessarily mean saving us from relegation.

Can't knock Slade for what he has done but hiring him in Jan wasn't a timely or adequate solution to the club's problems, as usual the owners have mismanaged the situation. The Directors persisted with a manager (Mowbray) who had lost interest and wanted to leave. They should have acted decisively to replace him in pre-season. If Slade had been here in June/July at least 4 weeks before the window closed I don't think the club would be propping up the division it would probably be in a safe mid-table position (playing shit but safe hoof-ball).

After the match we were talking about this is it the managers fault that the players were dire ? Yes he picks the team and formations etc,but when his team can't pass a ball properly, shoot straight, and have no ability,is it down to Slade ? That was a really poor match between two poor sides but Fleetwood went away with the win but if they're going for a top six position and the play offs no wonder League One is a joke !

I painted him as the messiah... from looking at his cv where he's saved every club on trouble he's been at. I honestly no of no one else with such a impressive cv at relegation fights.
I'm not related to him, never met him.... and I was not lashing out when I wrote my piece. Just trying to reason with the task he's got.

Sure this relegation fight is not going to plan and the results have not come for various reason largely bad luck and we now find ourselves adrift, sad times. But as we all no this is not your average club and we've been on the slide for a while. It's like there is a curse on the club.
I RS I see a man thats is trying, he's trying to shape a squad doing as many changes as he can within the funds disposable to him in a very short space of time.
Look at what he's done so far... defence is tightened up since Peterborough.... the goals is still a issue tho.
In the games against Peterborough and Bolton we seen a much more competitive side, in work rate and physicality. However against Chesterfield and Fleetwood it was not good to watch, ugly football that was largely ineffective and a big step backwards.
It would help tho if Burge could kick the ball with a purpose and keep it in... Turnbull looked up to where he was actually kicking it, so many stray long balls from him.
The players did not seem to stick to a plan that was devised if you watch Slade on the side too, if he had hair he'd still be bold!!! I don't feel the lump it idea was the full plan more a I don't want the ball...
However we desperately need a goalscorer.

He has managed to get the back line looking half decent hopefully he will move on to the midfield and stikers, not an easy task but we need some goals throughout the team somehow because a teenage lad from Derby is not going to be the messiah and save us all by himself
