Train prices (1 Viewer)

Does anyone know why there is a huge leap in train prices in March and from March onwards? It's baffling the hell out of me and I can't find anything online

I am fully aware prices are due to go up 3.8%, but clearly they are seemingly going up by much more. Can't get my head around it. So, here's the price and what I normally, £12.05 return, London to Maidstone. This example is Friday 11th March.

The following week and from then on in, the price is £17.95 plus. That is NOT 3.8%. Coventry to London is a very similar hike. Gone up by over £6.

Anyone any ideas? I mean a 20% increase on £12.05 would only be £2.40. 🤷 I know one of those says STP to Maidstone and the other London to Maidstone, but it makes no difference. I was just fiddling about to see at the time

The irony is, I am usually the expert on train prices too.
My understanding of the 3.8% rise is that is the average price rises across the board. Saying that I can’t see how they have come up with a 40%+ rise on a journey.

If you buy one of the expensive ones, you’ll still be saving money compared to your usual multi ticket buying…. ;)

Can't remember which network Otis but there's one of the Southern ones does a solo railcard that covers up to the Midlands, might be worth investigating

The prices vary so much, I have pretty much all the apps that cover my journey areas. I have the apps for Trainline, Train Pal, Avanti, West Midlands Trains, Southeastern, Cross Country and Chiltern.

The whole thing is a mess to be honest.

Our train fares in general are shocking - never mind any price hikes.
It’s a disgrace. How can the government pretend to be wanting less traffic congestion less c02 emissions and generally less cars on the road, when a return ticket from leamington to Marylebone costs £75 if you get it off peak (not super off peak) with a few days notice?

I would have done that commute twice a week if it was reasonably priced, it instead I drove down in a 2 litre Scirocco that drank fuel cause it was significantly cheaper

the train btw was one I booked second week of Jan and the carriage was literally empty we were the only ones in it.

Fuckin TrainPal cos me £50+ after the tickets I bought were cancelled without my knowledge and I had to buy on the train or risk a fine. Never again. Got my original money back but still a load of stress and £50 and down £150 for two days waiting for the refund.

Being someone who studiously avoids train travel where possible on cost grounds, I'm completely out of the loop.
However, I need to go to the Smoke for a couple of days, midweek, at some point soon (prob mid Feb), travelling from Hinckley or Nuneaton. It's for a bit of 'admin' but me and her want to have an evening in town, or maybe even two if we can sort a hotel that doesn't actually bankrupt me.
So, experts...
What's it likely to cost two adults, roughly?
What's the earliest in the day to embark so as to get seats? And likewise the best time to return?
I don't yet use any apps, so what's recommended for this particular route?
Ta.

So you have no railcards at all? Off peak trains are usually after around 09.45.

I just looked and it's a big 😳

Say for instance you went Wednesday 16th Feb and came back the next day ...

I have a Railcard, so that gets me around a third off, but I find prices vary wildly. It's all over the place.

Ouch. What a friggin' rip off.
No, I don't have a railcard (I assume I'd need to pay up front for that) as I haven't travelled by train for about 15 years.
Thanks anyway.

Yeah, a rail card is £30 a year, but you can usually get 10% discount and get them for £27.

A two-together railcard might pay for itself and more for that one journey.
