Travelling by train to the Ricoh (1 Viewer)

I suspect this is old news but it wasn't to me hence the post.

I am a season ticket holder who lives in Peterborough. I travel each home game by car and park by the Longford Engine, it take me about one hour roughly and is a fairly ok drive. I then walk to the Ricoh which takes me 15 minutes. It's around a 120 mile trip so quarter of a tank or £15.

In contrast, I had to travel by train last week (for reasons I don't need to go into). So we start by parking at Peterborough Station, catching a train to Nuneaton (holding my breath as we stop at Incester), then a change to get on a train to Cov. Get to Cov and then walk to the bus station followed by waiting and then catching the 101 to the Ricoh.

Firstly, this is not a whine or a call for concern for poor old me, just a comparison and I suspect an identifier as to why very few non car fans come to the Ricoh any more. The first is the price, the train ticket cost me three times more than the petrol, then we add on the car parking and the bus journey. We can also add the dismal state of the trains and having to stand for an hour and a half because they are way to small to cope with the amount of passengers. Lastly, and most importantly, it took me 3 hours door to door, rather than the usual hour and 15 minutes. Six hours in the day because I was using public transport.

So, I submit, the location of the Ricoh, and the lack of a train station near by, is plainly resulting in a loss of fans to home matches. If we estimate that 40%of the Cov fan base lives outside of the city and are likely to want to use the train to travel then here's part of the missing numbers.

Personally I will never travel by train again to the Ricoh, if I can't drive then I just won't go, my seat will remain empty for the day. A perfectly horrible experience and one that cost me way more than driving. So much for a sustainable 21st century.

Thanks for reading so far.

Hopefully, the new station will ease that, but the price of a rail ticket may still be too high.

For me, it will be free ( I travel to work on the train and have a season ticket for the region), but the time will be excessive, compared to the use of my car, which allows me to get from home to the arena in about twenty five minutes. It takes me nearly fifteen minutes to walk to Hinckley train station, for an hourly service to Nuneaton ( the same train you caught), public transport is rarely cost-effective for one off journeys, neither in time or money.

I think the rail operators will need to reach an agreement with the club for some form of combined ticket price, to make this work for fans from outside the immediate catchment area.

It definitely is a reason or 'excuse' for a lot of people I know. I live in Earlsdon and in and around the pubs on a match day quite a few people say they would go up if it was closer or easier to get to. It's also an effort to turn up on a whim if there are 1 or 2 of you.

I usually get a taxi up with a couple of mates and my dad, it's about £10 between us.
The bus they run from the city centre is £4 now I think, but you need to leave straight after the game to get back and I prefer to go to the casino for a bit.
Let's hope if the train station comes to fruition that more people will give it a go.
And this is just for people in living in the south of coventry. It's a ridiculous sitiation for away fans and people outside the city turning up at coventry train station then having a 6/7 mile journey after.

I'm sure the train station will help make it easyer for a lot of fans to get to the Ricoh, and I'd give it a go for a while too.
Then I could have a couple of drinks in the casino and make a day of it when we play.

InterSkyBlues - If you are ever stuck and can't get to any of the home games by car, but can get a train from Peterborough to Hinckley station, I'll happily pick you up and give you a lift to the Ricoh, rather than you having to miss the game.

Train usage is at an all time high !! But on major routes.
Both trains and buses are not flexible enough to get from A to B.
Cost and poor timing make it a poor second place to a car.
