Americans lack a bit of knowledge about the outside world certainly, largely in part because the country is so huge. I had meetings in New Jersey last week, and a couple of the people flying in came from the west coast, and it almost took them as long as me.

Most Americans are very friendly people, and very hospitable though. The country gets a bad name in the media, and I've known many people a bit hesitant to go because of it, but they've come back with great reactions. Sit in a bar over there and you'll have more people talk to you than many places in the world.

They're a pretty proud bunch, sometimes a bit ignorant to go with it, and there's certainly times I've felt like an alien telling people about my home planet of the United Kingdom, but they're always respectful.

It isn't surprising to me that Trump won. It isn't because they're all racist, stupid, or following Elon Musk on twitter. Trump speaks basic language that people understand and wants the country to be a better place (even if he is a bit of a clown and says a lot of dumb shit). I've been having some very interesting conversations with a variety of different people here. Some absolutely hate him, some love him, most people are fairly indifferent but think he'll try to do more for them than the alternative, of which multiple people told me they felt patronised by.

Other than the hardcore anti-Trump people, most of the negativity towards Trump I've seen comes from Europe to be honest. Take what you want from it, but whilst I think many Americans are cautious about Trump, there is much optimistism within that as well. The media might show you people in red hats spouting slogans to a camera, but in reality most people aren't like that and have a bit more common sense.

A nice write up. I’ve seen the patronising thing a few times but never understood it. What’s your feeling on the reasons behind that?

Let’s be honest, looking at the whole speech, he’s a strange one. At best that’s extremely clumsy, at worst downright offensive

What is also strange though is CNN mentioning and showing the clip without context or sound. Why do we still live in an age of people/media trying to influence thought, let people make their own minds up, good or bad

This is it. Such a diverse landscape with different climates and varying topography. All accessible on flights without needing a passport.

Here is Los Angeles you could go skiing in the morning, and be at the beach in the afternoon. How many other places can say that

Throw on top of that, that they’ve all been told the US is the best country in the world from childhood (and let’s face it…it has been the worlds dominant superpower for the last 80 years), and it’s little wonder that they don’t have a whole load of knowledge of the outside world other than what they were taught.

How many brits would travel to spain/italy/portugal for example, if they were an 8 hour flight away, if we could stay in england and get better weather?

Also, we’re all a product of our education up until a certain point in our life…how many on this forum know about the american revolution? I knew nothing about it until about 8 years ago lol. You only learn about the wars you win etc

Don’t get me wrong there are a lot of dumb fucking americans but there are a lot of dumb brits too

Why is it strange to show a replay of a moment from a speech they just carried live in its entirety?

Anyone switching on at that time and they’re talking about a salute and viewers being smart and take a look if that ? Come on. Listen to their words, you don’t think they’re trying to influence their viewers ?

All I’m saying is if you’re going to highlight something like that, show it on context with the sound on and let people make up their own minds

No, I think they’re discussing something their viewers just saw for themselves - what are they supposed to do, play the entire speech again? Are you surprised when today’s newspaper isn’t just a 200-page verbatim transcript of everything Trump said yesterday?

(I actually think the CNN reporters here go out of their way to avoid describing the salute as something that many people immediately recognise it as, but clearly you disagree)

Just have the sound on maybe ? ‘My heart goes out to you, thank you’ does change the context a bit rather than he was intense, came out did a little dance and then did that salute.

We do agree so let’s leave it there.

Seems pretty obvious what he was doing.

Yeah he's weird and maybe it was some bungled gesture or signal, but that's being very generous.

He was saluting the crowd in the style of a fascist. As usual his fans don’t like people just showing literally what their heroes say or do.

Here’s that biased CNN commentary you’re complaining about in full (I should add that obviously the clip you posted doesn’t share the full context of the CNN coverage either):

Reporter 1 - I just want to look at that salute he gave again, if anyone missed it, we’ll just show it again, he just wrapped up here, you can hear the….OK, so we just showed that, we just showed that salute…

Reporter 2 - Right and it’s worth…it was quick, I think. Our viewers are smart and they can take a look at that. But it certainly was… it’s not something you typically see at American political rallies, let’s put it that way.

Reporter 1 - No it’s not something you usually would see. And it was quick as you point out. It was a moment of intensity here for him, as he came out dancing and then he did that. He is a hero here…

Isn’t that literally asking them to make up their own minds? Also they didn’t say “our viewers are smart enough to understand what that means”, you’ve just made that up.

“There’s no sound or context to the clip” - again, they literally just showed the speech in its entirety (“He just wrapped up here”). You ironically seem to have missed this important context by posting an edited clip of CNN’s coverage?

I'm sure most on here will find almost all iof his actions and decisions over the past 24 hours pretty reprehensible and yet, it demonstrates what successive governments in the UK from both sides, who have hid behind bureaucracy and red tape, can make change quicker if there was an appetite to do so.

Sure it's mostly small soundbite stuff that was promised on the campaign trail and mostly only repealing what the last administration put in place, but so much possible in such a short time we could learn a great deal here.

If you’re going to highlight something specific, you at least show it with sound and context. As I say, viewers may have joined after that moment.

Why even show it again at all if people have watched the whole thing ? But no, there’s no attempt to influence

You’re not familiar with the concept of TV replays?

You seem to have been quite heavily influenced by the Twitter user who posted this edited clip - it’s a shame you didn’t think about the full context before reposting.

I found a graphic that explains better than you could comprehend. Have you got it now?

But let's be accurate... it is a tad misleading as..

Most of the Biden count is from a blanket pardon of ~6500 offenders for marijuana possession.
Carter's blanket pardon of ~209000 Vietnam era draft dodgers is missing.

Even discounting the pot heads Biden is still well ahead of Trump though.

I seem to have triggered you. You posted about pardons. I’m just pointing out that Trump has also pardoned people. It’s a normal thing presidents do.

As for your graph Biden pardoned thousands of people in prison for drug offences that are mostly not illegal any more over there. Trump pardoned thousands of people who were arrested for insurrection, which you’ve chosen to leave off. It’s a touch different.
