Part of it is just Trump being a child, BUT there may also be some thinking behind it.

A brain will have a subconcious bias on whether it's called the Gulf of Mexico or the Gulf of America and who has the most right to it. By trying to change it to Gulf of America then that bias could change and less people would complain if Trump put a stronger naval force in the area which could give them more control on migrants (most would come over land but some must try by water, as well as places like Cuba etc.

Trouble is I don't trust him or those around him to not take that to extreme measures.

Whatever people think of DOGE (and I think some of the conduct appears a bit extreme), some of the stuff they are uncovering, assuming it’s true, is almost comical, as well as also concerning.

I reckon the fall out from all this could be significant in the U.S. but also the U.K. and EU. The inability or unwillingness to properly account for expenditure like private companies have to is totally unacceptable. Hopefully this will lead to far closer scrutiny and transparency of where all the money is going

FWIW I hope they re-establish USAid as it no doubt did a lot of good, but from what I’ve read it needs far better controls and focus.

A quick google suggests that what is being claimed may well be slightly misleading to say the least. What is pictured is an off site storage archive, seems no actual work there.

There is also a logic to requiring all that paperwork. Many of the federal employees retiring now and in recent years will have been federal employees for decades. Their records go back to the days when all records were on paper. Now it seems the method of calculation for federal pensions is fairly complex and involves looking at the pay throughout their entire employment. Therefore you need to look back at pay records for decades, which are on paper, and have to be stored somewhere.

I'm 100% certain there are efficiencies to be made in government, there is in all governments. The problem is it often costs more to locate these inefficiencies and put replacement processes in place. Just going in an getting rid of entire departments of staff and shutting things down isn't making anything more efficient.

Not surprised to see you defending it Steve. The richest man in the world being allowed to hack into a government and just arbitrarily cut whatever he wants with no oversight in most normal countries would be seen as an outrage.

A further while ago you asked me to sit and watch Bill Maher's straw man ramblings about the election result. Time to listen in full to why the US turning into an oligarchy is a far bigger concern than how the US processes some retirement forms

Agree with this Dave. Unless you know individuals have been involved in fraud or intentionally misusing public monies I don’t get clearing everyone out. Just put proper systems in place and make sure that everyone follows them. I have no doubt that DOGE will cause some unnecessary damage by some of the actions/approach they’ve taken they’ve taken

It’s great news if Trump can find a mutually acceptable position for both sides to agree to end the war although my concern is this…

This wording together with some other reports suggest it’s Putin and Trump in the negotiations, not Putin and Zelensky (and possibly Trump).

I hope this isn’t the case as it doesn’t sit comfortably with me at all if it is

And this is one of the only things I moan about. I am usually very upbeat about most stuff. You only need to check my posting history to confirm that.

Just being a rapist should be enough for anyone to be against Trump, without starting on all the other stuff.

And I am with PVA here on this one. I think there will be one clear winner and it will be Putin. The previous US regime supported Ukraine through weapons, money and aid.

Trump has already said he is talking about stopping that funding.

That puts Putin in a much stronger position and Putin is a man who simply cannot be trusted.

It’s pretty obvious that Russia will keep the current territory and will probably get back those that Ukraine currently hold in Russia. The idea that negotiations would only begin when Ukraine chose to was never going to happen.

There’s also no chance of Ukraine joining NATO.
