The Sky Blues under 18s have been drawn away to Burton in the 1st round of this years FA Youth Cup.

The U18s drew 1-1 at Watford yesterday. They are now up to 5th with 11 points - 4 points becond second placed Cardiff. I think they’ve got someone in now doing the media for the academy side of the club so there should be a better output on news and highlights

First year scholar goalkeeper Cian Tyler started for Wales U17s yesterday in their 1-0 win over Kazakhstan. They now face Portugal on Tuesday in their final game

The U18s are through to the second round of the FA Youth Cup tonight after coming through unscathed in a potential banana skin against Burton 2-1. Sam McCallum opened the scoring from a corner before Jack Burroughs netted the all important goal after a superb ball from Jonathan Ngandu.

Match report:

Jack Burroughs proved to be the pivotal man at the Pirelli as his second-half strike helped the Sky Blues to victory over the Brewers in FA Youth Cup action.

The Sky Blues began the game on the front-foot - with thanks to winger Jack Burroughs who will still be reeling after being offered a professional contract upon expiration of his scholarship at the end of this season.

Burroughs was the main man for City with the bulk of the attacking play coming through him, and the build-up to the goal was no different.

He picked the ball up on the right wing and beat his full-back for pace and strength and earned a corner for the Sky Blues. The delivery was deep and Albion failed to clear the danger with the ball eventually falling to Sam McCallum who smashed his shot through a crowd of players and underneath Oliver Fairbrother in the Brewers net.

The Sky Blues had their tails up and nearly made their dominance count. A superb, defence-splitting ball out from the centre of defence from Josh Endall found William Bapaga as he was bearing down on goal. Following a slip from his marker, Bapaga chopped inside of the covering defender and unleashed a shot that deflected out for a corner kick.

For all of City's dominance, the Brewers kept fighting back and managed to carve out a chance for themselves after some neat interplay between Clamp and Hart on the right wing. Clamp eventually played Hart in-behind the defence, but with his angle narrowing at every moment he managed to get a shot off that was well matched by Tom Billson who palmed the ball away from danger.

The Sky Blues ended the first half nervy and were lucky to find themselves in front at the break. A great double save from Billson denied Clamp and Melhado, whilst minutes later Clamp - who was clean through on goal - smashed his effort wide of the front post.



HALF-TIME: Burton Albion U18 0 - 1 Sky Blues U18



It only took two minutes for the Brewers to find themselves back on level terms as they picked up in the second half where they left off in this first.

Kyle Clamp was played through on goal - similar to his chance in the first half - but this time he opted to slot the ball underneath the on-rushing Billson and into the back of the Sky Blues net to level up the scores.

City were back on the attack and slightly unfortunate not to have the chance to go ahead once again from the spot. Bapaga had the ball at his feet and the defender in his sights, and as he attacked, the forward went down under a challenge, yet, the referee waved away the protests and rewarded the Sky Blues with a corner.

The Sky Blues found themselves back in the lead minutes later and with 20 minutes left to play. Jonathan Ngandu played a wonderful ball over the top of the Brewers defence for Burroughs to run onto. The winger took the touch in his stride as he knocked it past the last defender and slipped it through the legs of the on-rushing Fairbrother.

With minutes left on the clock, Tom Hewlett entered the field of play and was right in amongst it straight away. He arrowed a teasing ball to the back post for Regan Ganley to meet and head just over Billson's bar for the hosts.

Depsite a late flurry of attacks from Albion, the Sky Blues stood tough as they march on to the second round of the FA Youth Cup.

Yeah. Just surprised they described him as a right winger.

You would have thought they would have gone with something like the midfielder, who played wide right tonight. Something like that.

It's like saying 'Tom Bayliss, the right winger'.

Just a minor gripe, but like you say he can play in the centre as an attacking midfielder too.

He prefers to play as a number 8, although is happy as a 10 or wide. He played as a right wing back tonight as the analysis on Burton was that their left back was maybe a weak link. So it was specifically targeted tonight..

No Bapaga is an U16 player playing up, was signed by Rio Ferdinand’s agency last year. He has 3 goals this season for the U18s

The striker we signed recently is David Bremang who has been playing for the U23s but not been on the bench for the first team yet. I don’t think he’s eligible for FA Youth Cup games as he’s too old but the left back we signed McCallum is

Not bad so far. I like the 4-1-4-1 formation but the two wide players need to be closer to Bremang, who is so isolated.

Also, Billy Stedman has no right foot whatsoever. Had space to shoot inside the area but tried to get it on his left, then had the chance to play in Grimmer but didn't want to pass with his right foot.

I’m quite impressed so far. Palace can’t cope with City’s pressing and have yet to muster an opportunity but we’ve only had half opportunities. I like Bremang up front, needs to work harder out of possession but you can see there’s a player in there. The two CMs Eccles and Ngandu have also played well putting challenges in

Yes that’s correct Costa, Eckersall, Bapaga, Nee, Nightingale and Scott are all U16 players. It will be an up and down season, when they’ve had the best players available they’ve won every game I believe but first and foremost it’s about player development and challenging players at higher age groups.

In other news, Jonathan Ngandu turned 17 last week and subsequently signed professional terms. Also, the FA Youth Cup second round has been drawn and we have an away tie at either Grantham Town or Cogenhoe United. Tie to be played before 17th November

Speaking of Burroughs, I'm surprised his younger brother wasn't involved with the U18's at the weekend given he's been assured of a two year scholarship. Injured?

The younger Burroughs (and the last one Otis) scored the winner for the under 16s on Saturday when they beat Bristol City 4-3. He plays CB where the 18's already have two 2nd year and one 1st year scholars. He normally features amongst the substitutes.
