The fact we managed to even get to the final despite performing poorly for 90% of the tournament bodes well for the future. With a proper tactician for a manager we’d have smashed it.
Not quite that simple, the players ought to bear some responsibility. The manager can craft the perfect tactics, but if players don’t stick to it, it’s a problem.Amazing how many are prepared to back an utterly wank football manager over very good footballers who are being held back by said wank football manager

The move for the winner started with Guehi aimlessly punting the ball, Rice and Bellingham caught in no one’s land, Walker doesn’t stop the cross and finally, Guehi reacts too late to Oyarzabal’s run.
The tactics weren’t brave enough. Yet, the players themselves weren’t brave enough either and on the night didn’t perform up to the standard required.
We were awful all tournament besides 45 good minutes against Holland
Southgate had this group playing like they needed a point to survive every match , that's on him , the players can't play it
Walker was excellent in the first half playing against probably the best player in the tournament.
Hopefully, you’re right and it’s all on Southgate and we’re a managerial change away from major tournament success. Looking at some of the individual performances, the mentality doesn quite look there.
If we’re the FA, I’d offer him a new contract. If I was Southgate, I’d walk away.
Based on?Lee Carsley for me
Winning the u17 or u19 World CupBased on?
Winning the u17 or u19 World Cup
Ingrained in the fa coaching structure
Great guy seemingly excellent coach
What Spain did
Surely nobody would be happy with Lee carsley
It doesn’t matter how we progressed through the tournament. We lifted our performances in line with the opponents we played.Have we just watched the same tournament ?
We made the final but was it all you hoped it would be ? We won 2 matches in 90 .. we should have lost to Denmark, Slovakia was a massive let off , the team looked like they didn't know eachother up until the Dutch game .
We've created next to nothing all tournament
How the fuck we made the final I will never know
And we've set up all tournament like burnley under sean dyche
He cannot take this group of talented footballers forward to the next tournament
I’d prefer a manager with experience in international settings and preferably English. Who fits the bill?Surely nobody would be happy with Lee carsley
What a banana I amHe won the euro u21 title , not the two you've mentioned .
And they keep adding to it with stupid additional competitions and more qualifiers for pre existing ones.100% this. The workload of top players is ridiculous
He did leave two good technical players out of the squad.Depends on whether you are judging them at club or international level I guess. Let’s be clear the manager has to take a huge amount of blame but he doesn’t. 1/ misplace passes 2/ show poor close control. There is a technical gap between British and continental footballers and always has been
Playing for penalties.Southgate defining moment in the tournament was just before Spain scored the winner when the BBC commentator said:
We have Connor Gallagher and Kieren Tripper getting ready to come on....
Don't want another few years of that negativity when we should have been the team to go on and win the game!
I’d prefer a manager with experience in international settings and preferably English. Who fits the bill?
Tactically, Potter would be the best English manager available. How would he or Eddie Howe handle the pressure of being England manager?
Talk of getting Klopp or Pep is plainly ridiculous.
Don't ever compare Robins to that clown. 100 times the manager Southgate will ever be.As I say, if we’re still around in 2038 let’s see
Was very disappointed at 1-1 and on top we didn’t put some fresh legs on and go on to win the game
Robins is similar to Southgate it maybe an English manager thing. Always looking to not lose initially rather than playing to win
Very true. They’ve only ever been called “golden generations” by the UK media and it’s ended up being parroted by fans who then believe the hype.I'm far from saying Southgate is perfect, but i don't buy the attitude towards England from the fans/press, that its always the manager's fault...
How many "golden generations" have we had in my adult life? How many supposedly "world class" players? And we've had a number of managers who were top level (Capello and Sven come to mind).
To some extent, we just aren't as good as we hype ourselves up to be.
We've never reached a final overseas before, we lost to the best team in the tournament but were competitive against them. It's not that bad really is it...?I'm far from saying Southgate is perfect, but i don't buy the attitude towards England from the fans/press, that its always the manager's fault...

Exactly, for all those who want Southgate out, there just isn’t a standout replacement as of yet.Howe or Potter would be out of their depth and unlikely to deal well with media pressure
To be fair, the squad consisting of:Very true. They’ve only ever been called “golden generations” by the UK media and it’s ended up being parroted by fans who then believe the hype.
That happened a lot last night - it was almost as though he was playing in a team where he knew he couldn't trust some of the players/tactics, and started to try and do too much himself (with the inevitable results). It must have been frustrating watching the Spanish defence mop up everything that went forward, because Kane couldn't hold anything up.His passing at times is diabolical , all tournament too , takes too many touches and gets dispossessed in silly areas .
Re: Carsley as per my earlier post - I’d refer you to Crewe away in that JPT Semi final. He’d be Southgate mark 2What a banana I am
Thanks for putting me right
Loved him when he played for us great with my kids
Then read about his kid
Then lad reffed the Strachan Foundation u18 game first u18 game and he was the coach
Nothing really happened in the first half and he had to leave early but came over to Sam as a young ref and asked him if he enjoyed reffing and how he was getting on
Specifically noticing some little bits that had happened to encourage him
I wondered if that’s the touch that people like him and Southgate have with younger players to help them be their best selves
Could you not argue that about 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2024?To be fair, the squad consisting of:
Ashley Cole
Ferdinand
Terry
G Neville
Lampard
Gerrard
Scholes
Beckham
J Cole
Rooney
Was very strong on paper. The problem was it came at a time when the opposition was also much stronger than it is now.
Exactly, for all those who want Southgate out, there just isn’t a standout replacement as of yet.
Lineker and Micah Richards are frankly delusional if they think Klopp or Pep would want the job. Shearer too thinking Howe is the ‘standout candidate’ - he hasn’t won anything and has ducked any questions about Newcastle’s ownership.
Realistically, it’ll be Carsley if Southgate walks and his only senior management experience was with us as a caretaker. We all know how that went.
Nagelsmann & Rangnick arguably the best coaches in the tournament failed. In fact, top coaches in the club game rarely do well at the international game.
