Portugal won in 2016 after finishing 3rd in their group with three draws against shite teams!
But did they play as badly as England in those draw ? We looked genuinely diabolical last night

Drew 0-0 with Austria had 23 shots to their 4

3-3 with Hungary 21 shots to 9

1-1 with Iceland 26 shots to 4

Suggests they just didn't take their chances

If he wants something different, try Wharton or Mainoo. Tell them to sit, keep it simple and just keep it ticking over and feeding Foden, Bellingham Saka and Rice.

Yeah that's the other thing with Trent there, it really affects how good Rice can be as he's having to do the job of two midfielders.

We've seen Mainoo leave Man Utd's midfield open all season, so for me it has to be Wharton to be the sitter. Rice can get forward.

Guehi was good in a poor performance. Never a 5 or below

He wasn't good.

He was slightly better than some others on the pitch that are getting the attention for being absolutely awful. The concept that he is a stand out shining light is getting silly. I was talking about BBC ratings, which is fan driven, but if you look on Fotmob where Evo is looking and based on stats, he has been given the same rating as TAA. No one played well yesterday.

If it’s anything like SBT ratings, like when one misplaced Eccles pass overshadows an otherwise great 90 minute performance and leads to a 5, I’ll judge by my own eyes. I thought he was good. One obvious mistake in the game which he made up for but other than that was one of only a few to pressure/press their players, won headers and tackles and from memory, distributed ball pretty well 🤷‍♂️

Edit - I’m talking a 7, not a 9 or 10. Most of the rest would struggle to get above 4s and 5s although I thought Foden looked better than v Serbia

I honestly wouldn't have rated any player from last night at more than a 5. Worst display I have seen from us in some time.

Has he been sacked yet?

I'm guessing we will scrape though, and maybe get to a semi-final after a couple of 1-0 wins and people will be wanking over him as the best.

It's much more entertaining watching random games like Turkey v Georgia where they actually want to win. None of this go 1 up and camp in our own half. (Which is also why we lost the Euros final)

According to the ratings, no one scored even a 6 or higher. Everyone was a 5-someting or below, even Guehi. I don't see how anyone can say certain players had a decent game. They were all shit, just some were shitter than others.
Not sure that's correct.

8 is a bit high. I would say 7.

Guehi made that one mistake at the end (and quickly made amends), but was otherwise good and definitely England's best player.

He's done enough so far to keep that shirt even when Maguire returns although Maguire is a Southgate favourite.

We were absolutely shocking.

Called 1-1 before the game though. He always goes ‘safe’ in the second game after a win in the first as it means we’re basically through.

We need to look like we can turn it on though and there is little sign anything is there.

Maybe it's been said before, but Southgate coming out with that Phillips comment and Harry kane practically sayin they don't know when to apply pressure or not after playing and training with the same players is really embarrassing.

Truly is

Unbelievably, it seems we went into this tournament totally under prepared, which is very bizarre.

He's had ample opportunity to tinker and try new things in friendlies.

Worst of all for me is that players I really admire and rate highly, just seem like all the lifeblood has been drawn out of them when they put on an England shirt

As I say, I think 8 is a bit OTT for Guehl, but he was definitely worth a 7, where just about everyone else was about 5 or below.

He was two marks better than everyone else? Behave. No player was worth more than a 5.

The Fotmob ratings are set too high, but even there he is rated as the opposite of a standout with many other players who are being ridiculed scoring higher.

It was the worst performance in years. No one played well.

Plenty of people said he played well.

All about opinions isn't it.

I thought he played very well, made that one bad mistake, but put it right.

Was literally just about to post the video to this. We all knew it but it's actual insanity when you see the average positions drawn up like that - Harry Kane at left back?!?!

I get the talk in the build up to this tournament was that our defence is not the strongest. But relatively speaking a centre back pairing of Man City's John Stones and Premier League Marc Guehi is still pretty good. It's like Southgate is convinced by all that media talk before hand and is doing his best to protect that "weakness".

I don't know how a manager dealing with the quality of players he has at his disposal, believe it's a good idea to sit back and invite pressure like that. It's like Southgates tactical knowhow came from a very early addition of Championship Manger where there are only two tactical options; attack or park the bus. Clueless.

Really no surprises how Denmark set-up and play but just didn't have an answer for it.
TAA's defensive issues been obvious for a while. He gets away with being a defensive central midfielder at Liverpool because of the hard press that Liverpool play.
Trippier's place at Newcastle has been under question because of his defensive fragilities (and that's in his stronger right full back position). Completely unable to help Foden on the left going forward.
Rice thrives at Arsenal because of their high energy press game.
Almost square pegs for round holes

TAA can play as an inverted RB or on the right side of a midfield 3 with Liverpool & is surrounded by pace & runners to find with his passing range. England have none of that. It's mental to be "experimenting" with him in a deep lying midfield 2 during a major tournament.

Similar with Kane tbh, he's never really been one to run in behind & even less so as he's got older. He's absolutely elite though at his hold up & link play but we're stifling him by having no runners for him to link with. There was space in behind last night but we have players who all operate in the same areas & makes us easy to defend against.
This is where Southgate got it right in the last Euros. He persisted with Sterling, against a raft of public opinion, & he and Kane thrived together.

You can't simply chuck all your best players on the pitch & let them figure it out at this level. It's back to the Lampard, Gerrard, Scholes fiasco again.

What's this, Guehl, excellent in both games? 🤪
