Really? So his mother is English but he can't claim to be British and yet someone with no British ancestry and wasn't born here is perfectly ok? That's even more mixed up!

Pieterson wanted to play for South Africa. He opposed the legislation that meant the team had to select black cricketers so he moved to England on a parents passport and qualified under a 4 year rule.

On playing for England I agree, but his right to be a Brit is indisputable.

She's British. Moved here with her family when she was two and has grown up in a British society and school system.

Johanna Konta on the other hand is not British. IIRC she didn't set foot in this country until she was 16. Australia can have that moaning bottle-job.

I do feel like these fairytale runs are distracting from just how poor quality women's tennis is at the moment - seems to me anyone in the top 200 can win the Slams, it's just who wants it the most during the course of the two weeks. The fact they get paid the same as men is borderline criminal.

I play tennis every now and then, used to play competitively about 10 years ago, and I'm confident I could win matches against most of the top seeds.

No. Even if she wins multiple slams. You can keep baiting like the poundshop Grendel you've become, but still no and having watched her and enjoying Tennis I probably have more invested in her than some cheap IRA supporting troll.

I'm made up for her, amazing achievement, seems really level headed and a great kid too, but to change my stance based on success would be an awful thing to do, British if you win but not if you lose. No issues if she wants to call herself British and play as a Brit knowing the trappings and sponsorship that will follow as first female slam champ in nearly 50 years - good luck to her I'd do the same, but in her heart I'd be surprised if she doesn't think differently.

She's playing as a Brit as she considers herself British. I imagine she doesn't really care if the odd idiot thinks she shouldn't be allowed to call herself British. You're right that she probably also has an affinity with Canada, Romania & China but doesn't mean she doesn't have any less affinity for the country she's called home for as long as she can remember.

Idiot? Really? What is about this place that makes it acceptable to start dishing insults so readily when someone's opinion differs from theirs? As a moderator it's a joke. Have I called you anything? Have I unprovoked started on you? I often respond similar, but don't initiate it. A couple of weeks ago everyone was crying about the word 'spastic' arguably rightly so, although the one complaining not blameless, yet we can't even police ourselves and be respectful. It's an opinion on Britishness. I respect her, I respect her play, I'm thrilled for her, even her right to feel British, I just have an opinion that no ancestry here and not born here doesn't make her so. I'm allowed to hold that thought without you or anyone else thinking it's acceptable to dish out insults.

So gfy you c**t

It's ok, I don't consider you British.

Half Romanian, half Chinese and born in Canada. More of a stretch than Greg Rusedski. Media far too hungry for female British slam champion.

Rusedski's Mum was English to be fair. Became a British citizen in 1995 for convenience having already represented Canada. Definitely having Raducanu as more British.

I used to love that people from around the world took pride in becoming British and aligning with our strong values on justice, compassion and empathy. Feel sorry that we are not as respected as a nation as I’m growing older and those things that make us British are flags, morality and judgement
Very well put.

This idea of Britishness has led to Windrush, people who came here at the behest of the British government and the queen as head of the Commonwealth now questioned as to their right to be considered British, not born here, no ancestry ...........

To be honest I prefer it when there are a whole raft of potential winners and it could be a shock. I want the competition to be evenly spread out not one or two dominating.

Men's tennis I find dull. Djokovic wins. If he doesn't win Federer does. Same with the women's when it was just going to be Serena.

I don’t agree about the standard. The choking in the women’s game is a shame and seems to be more prevalent than in the men’s but the standard from the two in the final is magnificent

To be fair some of the play from the top players has looked poor. The fact a qualifier can get this far isn’t really a ringing endorsement- I saw the QF and the Olympic champion was dire. Barty looks all over the place, Osaka seems gone and Petriva was poor in the semi

Exactly, which is why I found Rob's comments so offensive. To be fair, he normally seems a decent guy and I was probably wrong to call him an idiot, but I know people who are directly affected by these issues.

Offensive? You can disagree with me that's fine, but it certainly wasn't offensive and could never be considered so by even the wokest of woke!

I guess the thing is that nation states are themselves pretty artificial and so belonging to one becomes difficult to define. If someone moves here the day after they're born and spends their whole life here are they 'more British' than someone born here but moved the day after and never came back?

I can’t see how Windrush is applicable in this case at all

Fair play to Channel 4 for getting this on free to air, lots of people will want to see this.

Good luck to Emma, happy to root for someone who's embraced Britain, rather than those players who seem to hate a great portion of it.

It's not PC but he's right, most people identify with their parents cultures more. My wife was born here and she doesn't really consider herself British. It's only a problem if you consider foreign people as lesser. Its funny how offended some people get by it, if I moved to Japan when I was 2 I doubt I'd be considered Japanese.

My wife was born in Scotland and lived there into her 20s, but was repeatedly told 'yeah but you aren't though' for not having the right accent as her parents are both English. So she sees herself as English anyway as a fuck off to all the Scots who said she didn't count
