I might be in the minority, but it has got the decisions right according to the laws of football.

If they can sort the communication out - get it on the big screens and mike up the ref it can be OK.

I agree. I like it.

Of course there are going to be teething problems as there usually is with any technology.

The criticisms of it are getting all a bit silly. Tonight they were even complaining about a decision that was purely down to the ref and had absolutely nothing at all to do with VAR.

It's going to take time to get it spot on, but we have got to give it time and it will obviously speed up.

If it doesn't, ditch it, but give it a chance first.

I'm sure it will be. It's all so new at the moment.

I reckon that exact thing will happen soon.
Although I agree it’s early but we have had the major advantage of seeing this tech being played out in other sports but it’s like football has been far too superior to ask questions from cricket and rugby about their early stages mistakes as you can bet it was around fan communication

Exactly this Otis.
For as long as I can remember people have banged on and on about using video refs, the FA finally say OK we'll trial it in certain games and see how it goes. Then within half a dozen games write it off as shit!
Personally, I don't think it'll work. Not just because of the stop/start nature of using it, but unlike with Cricket and Rugby, the ref doesn't have the respect. In Cricket and Rugby, the refs decision is final, if he's not 100% he asks the TMO, and his decision is final. Its left on the field. The players may complain in the dressing room. But its very rare a manager or player will ever slate a ref in an interview (with exception of Wales the other week). In football were already on a thread talking about what a joke the system is and what a clown the ref was for not using it properly and how we all here, sitting at our keyboards could do a better job.
Just look at Steve Evans, If (like his body shape dictates) had gone into coaching rugby and not Football, he would literally be unemployable. There wouldn't be a team in the world would touch him. Yet he's good enough to be poached by a team in a higher league in the football world. Says it all

Maybe, just maybe, this could be the catalyst for change whereby rules are brought in that only allow captains to talk to referees in future and that refs also start booking for any form of dissent.

It has been needed for some time now. Refs are constantly getting intimidated.

Maybe wishful thinking, but it has to happen at some point. Refs are getting pressure left, right and centre.

I think at some point in the future there will be a couple of incidents involving a degree of violence with players pushing refs over or hitting them and then a sudden panic will spread amongst the authorities.

Well that's already happening abroad and at a lower level here.
All the time I see videos of some team in South America chasing the ref around the pitch.
I remember one Sunday morning, a player on the team we were playing pulled a screwdriver from his sock (as you do) and chased the ref into the dressing rooms.

I agree I think it’s going to cause a lot more fiery situations which if it continues in the same vein is likely to cause a lot more abuse towards refs

You sure that was a Sunday league game and you weren't at Millwall?

I know! Crazy. Thankfully the game was abandoned as I wouldn't of liked to of seen what the rest of the team kept in there socks.
The entire team were kicked out of the league, they came back a season later though. Same players just a different team name!

And the screwdriver guy was their captain!!!

I remember one ref who used to give it absolutely loads to the players, taunted them, if he booked or sent them off he would be an absolute knob. Ironically there's been a few instances where he has had a slap for it.

Sometimes, some people really do deserve a slap.
Reffing on a Sunday morning is one of those thankless jobs. Without them, we couldn't play. But the abuse they get is shocking. I do wonder why they bother! Stay sober (ish) on a Saturday night to stay fresh for the morning, go out to a freezing cold, ploughed farmers field to be verbally abused for 90mins by 22 hairy arsed fuckers. All for about £30..... crazy!

Yep some of them are decent. There were always some who would just have a laugh and take it for what it is but then there were others who were complete dicks. Same as the players really, some would have a bit of the "banter" and get on with it but others would be stupid about it.

The FA seem to be ignoring all other sports & leagues that are currently using VAR, it can't be as bad in Germany or Italy surely? It seems that UEFA aren't convinced yet FIFA are and it will probably be used in Russia this summer. I am not against it but don't think it should be used where the decision is subjective.I also don't understand why it is reviewed somewhere in London rather than at the stadium, surely all clubs at PL and Championship level have the facilities to accommodate video replays

I don't see how VAR can work only at selected games.

What happens if a team wins a game based on a decision that 99% of refs wouldn't have seen and it wouldn't be given yet other teams aren't using it so wouldn't have that luxury?

You would think it would have to be used in all games. Same with the FA cup, what happens if when we played Brighton there was a game changing moment (likely thinking) that could have changed the outcome but in other games in that round they had VAR?

Just scrap it.

Instead of it removing doubt & debate regarding decisions, its just adding another level of doubt, debate & massive delays in play.....

.....it won't be long before every fucking decision will be referred to VAR for review simply because they can & its available......

....and you'll still have a panel full of gobshites in the studio arguing the toss.....

classic case of technology for technologies sake.......

Play to the whistle. Referees decision is final.

Managers and players are clearly not happy with that though and have been moaning about refs decisions and been calling for video technology for years.

No, I think something clearly needs to change. The refs say is final now (according to the laws of football) but nobody gives a shit and he still gets ripped to shreds during and after the game. It needs to be used only at the refs discretion and not to be bullied into it by 5/6 players and/or managers on the touchline. It also needs work and the Video judges need to be quick. None of this rock and rolling the frame like in cricket looking for a hot spot. Quick decisions and keep the game moving

...and us fans love a good debate about disputed decisions......

the world game has done fine without VAR for the last 150 years or so.........the game simply doesn't need it.......its just a load of media bollocks.

The game has changed though unfortunately over the years and the cost you can put on one single game these days can be huge and momentous.

It's all about the money. One game can be worth millions if it means promotion or relegation or a place in Europe etc.

More vital than ever that decisions made are the correct ones.

I do believe this is the future and it will get better. It's still all new and shiny at the moment and so much technology in any field has teething problems at first.

Two main VAR issues:

1. Letting the crowd, players and managers know what is going on, on the field of play.

And

2. The speed in which a decision is made.

Address both those (relatively easy) and the system will work so much better.

They've got the goal line tech which is the reason a lot of people wanted VAR. I'd keep it for offsides as that's a binary issue, maybe for if something is in the penalty area or not. Past that football rules have an element of interpretation so not sure it will ever really work.

One things for sure, they need to follow cricket and get it up on screen in the grounds. Must be crap if you're at the game. You'd have no clue what was going on.

That’s only because they believed every ref decision went against them. Let’s face it wenger never watched the game or saw any incident unless it was against arsenal. When they see VAR also gives decisions against them they won’t be so keen.

VAR: Premier League clubs not expected to approve VAR for next season

Okay, so back to the 'It's outrageous,' 'How could the officials get it wrong?' 'No way that was a penalty!' 'That was a clear penalty,' 'the referee was a disgrace,' 'that was clearly outside the box,' 'that was clearly inside the box' etc.

Going to be more whining and whingeing from managers. Been getting worse year on year anyway.

Fully expect one of them to spontaneously combust next season.

The most laughable thing here is the VAR has just about got every single decision right, which is what managers wanted and were crying out for.

Yep they will whinge, whinge and whinge some more. It’s about time the authorities grew some and protected refs from both managers and on field intimidation. Then don’t get me started on armchair pundits who pontificate on tv (yes they may have played at a high level but they still don’t understand the rules). It’s not VAR that is really needed but respect for officials. As I have said before it is players who persistently try to con and cheat and very rarely refs. If VAR is to be used the same technology should be used to highlight and provide evidence for retrospective action against players. Any manager who criticises a ref and then replays show they acted correctly should have a couple point reduction. It would soon stop the nonsense we often hear after games where it is all the refs fault not the incompetence of the players or the tactical nativity of the manager.

Refs struggle as it is this makes their job harder and adds doubt to their minds.

Plus hows it going to work phases wise, ball stays in play for 2 mins but a clear foul is missed and play continues and the ‘foulers’ team score?

Needs to be dropped keep goal line tech maybe add something for offsides once a fool proof system is designed but for now just admit you’ve tried and failed.

Just thought I'd dig up the VAR debate as it still seems to me that it adds nothing to the game except another level of debate, ambiguity & potential for players to bitch, moan & whine about every little decision.......

Goal line technology: YES
V.A.R: pointless load of dog doo

I'm still in favour.

It will work in time. Surely pretty much all technology has teething problems when it is first introduced.

Did Alexander Graham Bell stop developing the telephone because that first call wasn't a very good line?

I just think there is far too much at stake these days in the game and the money that can be involved in one single incident can be monumental.

It's going to happen for sure. Like in cricket with snicko and the Cyclops system (now Hawkeye) in tennis.

These systems all have initial teething problems.

Liquid Gold

Well-Known Member
I just think they should have waited for the system to be perfected before bringing it to the world cup. It's mad that refs use it in different ways and there are sometimes language barriers between the VAR and the on pitch ref.
