Chief Executive Steve Waggott has issued the following message on the dismissal of manager Steven Pressley this morning...
It hasn’t been a pleasant few days. While football clubs are sometimes labelled as being ‘trigger happy’ when it comes to letting managers go, that’s not the way I operate.

As a man, Steven Pressley is an honest, genuine, and very hard-working football person and I have got on with him brilliantly over the past two years.

There is a long-term plan here at Coventry City that means creating a clear pathway from academy, through development squad and into the first team, complemented by experienced professionals, and he absolutely bought into that.

In terms of that long-term plan, Steven’s work and achievements should be acknowledged because we are in better shape from that point of view thanks to him and the staff around him.

Similarly, Steven’s efforts in maintaining our League One status last season in the face of possibly the toughest 12 months in Coventry City’s history has to be recognised.

But, in football, the performances and the results of the first team are always under scrutiny as it is effectively the first-class carriage that pulls along everything else the football club does.

So while you always want to look long-term, you have to take a view of the shorter-term too and with no League win at home since October, a slide into the bottom four in League One, what happened in the FA Cup, we came to the very difficult decision that it was time for a change.

We wish Steven nothing but the best for the future and place on record our thanks for his efforts.

I know the question will be raised about the ‘backing’ he has had from the club but our budget (money spent on players’ wages both permanent and loan) is up there in the top six for this division.

Whether you pay a fee for a player or not, most agree that the squad we have here is good enough to be challenging for the top six, and successive visiting managers have pointed out the quality of our playing staff.

We’ve restructured the squad over the last two summers and have supported Steven in allowing players to leave because they didn’t fit into the way he wanted to play at those times, and brought in players that met his requirements.

I hear it said quite often that we won’t get anywhere with kids from the academy, loans and free transfers, but I don’t think many were thinking that when they saw how well Swindon played against us here a few weeks ago – and that what was pretty much the make-up of their starting eleven.

Paying a fee isn’t the key at this level, it’s getting the most out of your budget that really counts and I think we can all agree that we haven’t done that in the past year. Steven, himself, has said as much.

So what now? We will not rush a permanent appointment because it’s a decision that requires a fulsome process to try, if possible, to avoid this situation in another two years.

In the meantime, Neil MacFarlane and Dave Hockaday will take temporary charge of team affairs.

Above all, I want supporters to rest assured that this decision has been made with the best interests of the club at heart in order to move us away from the bottom four as soon as possible.

Can't really argue with any of that. I did like the first class carriage bit, not heard that one before!

That's the key isn't it. I know you can't directly link budget to league positon but clearly there's a strong connection between the two and being in the bottom four with a top six budget is clearly not acceptable.

pressure needs now to be put on sisu to get this prat Waggott out of our club, been here 4 years and now on his fourth manager, fucking idiot !

Not rushing for an appointment can be a good thing ensuring you get the right man, but under Shaw those 5 losses ruined our season. Let's hope a similar thing doesn't happen, leaving the new man with too much to do.

There is indeed a certain logic that if someone keeps picking the wrong candidate, they should be ultimately responsible.

I'm absolutely delighted with the conversation I had with Steve Waggot this morning, the work ethic of the group was outstanding and this decision will help this club go from strength to strength in the way I want to see.

If you go through the squads of 75% of the teams in this division, they are of a substandard level. Ironically if the owners were as stingy with money for the playing squad as many claim, we would be all but relegated by now.

Shaw said at the time that he didn't even try to change the tactics for the Thorn regime, so there was no surprise with those results.

I actually agree with him on all that's mentioned, but...

I take it that "..won't rush into an appointment ..." bit is code for Hockaday for the rest of the season. Why pay more in wages than they have to in other words.

It all seems to make sense why hockaday was bought in.we all thought it, but we all hoped he wouldnt take the reigns but im sure thats what will happen. Naughty and probably put sp under more pressure.i am truly gutted sp has not worked out the way i thought he might but think him going is right decision. But to sneakily appoint someone under him in another role to take his job is just disrepectfull.

Comparing us to swindon shows sisus ambitions.... tosspots

I wish it did, Swindon have a huge investment, links to Spurs and other premier league clubs, backers who are serious with money.. where no where near their level as a club now thanks to SISU

He picked the right candidate in Robins but the right candidate eventually picked somebody else

True.

Although again that wasn't a full season, much as last season's good form wasn't either.

We are in danger of seeing the football club fall not one, but two divisions under his watch however. And if the manager goes for lack of success on the field, it's hard to argue a case for his boss.

Is there any actual evidence that this is true or, is it just true because Waggot says so? Not that I ever doubt the truth of what I'm told by our club.

As much attention should now be turned on getting Waggott out as there was for Pressley going, other cheek of the same backside, a provern failure here and at Charlton. One thing and one thing alone should see him sacked, giving that prick Pressley a 4 year contract. some of which will now need paying up. That money could have bought a player or two.

hope they give him a freebie for the mk game ,maybe baker can show him a thing or two about how the game should be played

I think it's probably the right time to take off the "Steven ticked every single box" View From The Backroom message from the official site.

Reading that statement it says to me that Pressley didn't sign the players we have. If that's the case, a question that needs asking is, who did make the decision of these players?

If we have one of the top 5 or 6 wage budgets in the league then we are seriously over paying the majority of the shower of shit that steps on the pitch. It is not how much you pay but how much quality you get for said money. As one of Wagott's main jobs since he has arrived has been to help with player recruitment he should do the honorable thing and fuck off too.

I simply don't believe him when it comes to the budget, SISU have made a big habit of lying and bullshitting everyone for 3 years now, I'd want to see evidence of our wage spend on players, also Waggot ought to take a look at his own involvement in team affairs........Dog eat Dog !!

I have no doubt we're over paying a number of players, we've been doing it for years.
