Change of sport but this is happening all too often...Hull, Cardiff, xxxx?

Warwickshire County Cricket Club to change its name for 20 20 games to Birmingham Bears! No consultation with fans etc but they want to attract a wider audience in Birmingham.
What next Northampton Sky Blues? Money talks over a 100 years of tradition out of the window, is CCFC next?

I follow Northamptonshire. Interesting when Warickshire play in Northampton you get loads of Warickshire lads turning up - but a bit shy on the Brummies.

It is in Birmingham and its only 20 20 so it may be a good marketing move. Fans consultation is always wise.
The elephant in the room on this is they don't actually play in Warwickshire.

Thats a bone of contention i know, WCCC was formed in Leamington, is called Warwickshire but plays in the West Midlands?
The ground should be somewhere in Warwickshire not Edgbaston? Complete shambles but its old identity is being eroded bit by bit, thus i fear for the future of my beloved football team.

If ACL did move on like they say they have too at some point and SISU don't actually plan a new stadium we could be in that ball game.
I think the stadium will always be there so realistically we could come back at some point.

Haven't they played in Birmingham for well over 100 years? We (coventry) aren't in Warwickshire anymore ourselves anyway. I used to go and watch them when I was a teenager, not bothered at all these days.

But isn't that as a result of the mid 1970's metropolitan borough name shifting BS? Prior to that both Cov and Brum were Warwickshire.

It's not really that simple though seeing as Birmingham and the West Midlands were previously in Warwickshire. As the home of the club for well over 100 years, Birmingham as just as much of a claim to the club as Warwickshire does-but the reality is that we share the club.

The T20 name is a bit tasteless, but so is T20, full stop.

Whilst we're on Bears, hope you get well soon Trotty. Here's to a massive pile of runs for Warwickshire next year to seal your place back in the England side.

Using the same logic Lancashire don't play in Lancashire, Middlesex don't play Middlesex, and Surrey don't play in Surrey.

It is worth remembering that Edgbaston is actually just one of the grounds that Warwickshire play at. The whole idea of County Cricket is that they play games all over the county. At times WCCC has played competitive "home" matches at:

Binley Road Ground Coventry
Courtaulds Ground Coventry
Griff and Coton Ground Nuneaton
Leamington Cricket Club Ground Leamington Spa
Mitchells and Butlers' Ground† Birmingham
Morris Motors Ground† Coventry
Nuneaton Cricket Club Ground Nuneaton
Parr and Wisden's Ground Leamington Spa
Rugby School Rugby
Stratford Cricket Club Ground Stratford-upon-Avon
The Butts Ground Coventry

They played at Rugby School in the 20 20 this year remember. So next season will we have the Birmingham Bears playing in Rugby? Disgusting if true.

Yep. Some pointless 1970's bureaucracy cannot erase 1000 years of history. Coventry will always be in Warwickshire as far as I'm concerned.

I wasn't aware of that. That is a bad choice of name then.

And a large part of Birmingham too? Or just us?

Most of Birmingham. Some out it was in Staffordshire and Worcestershire.

Just checking. Even though it happened way before I was born I still put Warwickshire on my address whenever I can!

I still insist on saying "Coventry, Warwickshire" when quoting my old address to people. And I still put "Coventry, Warwickshire" on envelopes when writing to the area. West Midlands just sounds so cold and Metropolitan Borough-ish. Horrible! As voters, we were never consulted on the name change of our county and the boundary changes.

I'd take a name change over a permanent relocation if it came to it. I'd go to the Ricoh to watch the Spungos play, although these tickets have no hologram and appear to be printed on some kind of cracker.

To increase the fans identity with Birmingham to increase support....but they ostracise all those who live in the county. Who are these morons that think these things up.

Me I'll be staying away, I have no association with a Birmingham team.

What a ludicrous decision.

Im from Warwickshire and have no affinity to Birmingham.

How is this even allowed, after all this is COUNTY cricket?

Just a step towards franchise cricket.

What next, Leeds Lions?

Agreed, ridiculous. I have been to watch Warwickshire lots of times in all forms of cricket, this really puts me off. Exactly like PVA says this won't be county cricket anymore Lots of fans travel from Warwickshire to Birmingham to watch the Bears, you only have to get a train or bus over on match days - this will not increase crowds if anything it will decrease them.

If there was goint to be a new T20 tournament similar to the Big Bash or the IPL and all the team names were altered, then I could possibly understand it. But it seems only Warwickshire have done this so far.

I still put Warwickshire on the delivery address when I order stuff. Sounds classier than West Midlands, an effect admittedly ruined when I'm ordering animal porn and One Direction CDs.

What about the support that turn up to Edgbaston, the majority being Birmingham residents who have no affinity to Warwickshire?

I hide my 1D annual inside the jazzmags when on the train, it's the perfect ruse.

Did you know Harry's favourite colour is green? He's so dreamy! (even though he looks mildly homeless)

I would question as to whether the majority are Birmingham residents. Train back over here is always busy after a Warwickshire game.
