This is a minefield - greeting a female friend nowadays is it an air kiss? One side? Both sides? Full on the lips with tongues? What's going, we're not French for goodness sake. I've even got male friends now that insist on handshakes all round when we meet down the pub. What's happened to good old British reserve and being emotionally uptight?

problem is, different female friends seem to have their own rules - i.e. some expect one side kiss, others two, so after completing the first kiss there's an awkward moment where shes either expecting another kiss (and tilts her head accordingly), or wonders why you're still hovering next to her with a funny look in your eye.

I bumped into my ex missus in Aldi a few months ago. We were together 18 years but I hadn't seen her or been in touch for a couple of years. I thought how do I greet her ? A peck on the cheek maybe, or a hug ? We ended up shaking hands ! WTF !

I agree this is minefield - i have a French women as a boss - i have never kissed her and dont expect to but a women at the same rank expects a slobber - is it a kiss or is just a head position - they also have this annoying habit of shaking hands when seeing someone in a restaurant meaning that i have to clean my hands

the worse thing for me is, no matter what I do, I fret for ages about whether it was right.
There are a lot of things in this countries past that are best left there, the British reserve the OP alluded to isn't one of them.

A lovely old couple on my round mentioned to me that they like Elvis Presley, So when I was in a charity shop recently I saw an Elvis album,all his hits on a double LP.Only a couple of quid so I bought it.When I took it round the old lady got all excited and grabbed me and gave me a whopping kiss on the lips ! I was left All Shook Up. Pardon the pun.

I have an elderly relative who insists on pulling me towards her, kissing me full on the lips and lingering whenever I see her. If this was not bad enough she has a carbuncle of a mole on her top lip that protrudes about 10mm and is covered with long, wire like hairs. The last time she did this one of the hairs went up my nose inducing an instant sneeze mid sloppy snog.

Sounds like you need some new (normal) friends! If your friends are that needy they wants 2/3/4 kisses every time you meet, stop meeting them! Just talk to them on What's App

Its when you nut them if you are going for a side by side and they arnt - so embarrassing - i remember my mother embracing one of my mates - she had never met him and he defo wasnt expecting it - i had to apologise and say she did that to everyone
