Whinging Cotterill set to take charge for Forest tomorrow (2 Viewers)

Completed a very rare double over his Portsmouth side last season. Im not scared.

Desperate from Forest in my opinion. Crap manager. He'll make them a mid-table Champ team and no better. Saying that, I think they'll win tomorrow now because of the "new manager syndrome" and he won't have enough time to influence their play, just a confidence boost.

Don't rate the bloke at all. Hardly get Pompey playing like champions but sods law Forest get a new manager & their players will no doubt put on a Barcelona type display to impress their new manager! :facepalm:

Personally I think Cotterill is a decent manager - did a reasonable job at Burnley, did a v good job at Notts County and despite all the financial problems etc he has done a good job at Portsmouth. Their finances were as bad as hours and he still got them to a higher place than us. I am sure we will suffer from first match syndrome with Cotterill and Frank Clark becoming Chairman - our good news AT hasn't left!

To be fair they have got a much stronger and experience squad than us.

Not going to join the doom and gloom merchants.

Cotterills first game in charge of Pompey was against us and we beat them 2-0.

Same again tomorrow.

I don't nessecarilly see his appointment as a negative to our chances tommorrow,they still obviously have a decent squad ,but there seems division within the ranks ,due to the new player influx, the dressing room dynamic of the last couple of years has been massively upset ,i don't see it being reconciled in one day.

After his childish ranting last season, i dispise of the guy! And his accent / voice is so irritating (no offence to anyone from his neck of the woods)

Whatever his merits as a manager, he just comes across as a bit of a pratt. Mind you, so have most recent Notts F managers.

God a sensible comment on this topic. I cannot believe what I have read. When Portsmouth played us last season they could not even fill the bench. Bookies and their fans had them as hot favourites to go down (sound familiar). Difference is he is a properly qualified manager so we go down and they (and Forest) stay up.

He is an average manager, I think we will win tomorrow. Yea Portsmouth did have similar problems to us in terms of finance and squad depth but they still had players like Utaka who cost 7 MILLION POUNDS on the pitch that day we beat them 2-0, they also had Tommy Smith and David Nugent playing also that day.
When we beat them 3-0 they had Dave Kitson, Dave Nugent, Hayden Mullins, Danny Webber, Richie Da Laet. These are all players with premiership experience.

Cotterill wont be a factor tomorrow as Kelly and Hasselbaink will be in charge. He probably hasnt even met the players yet.

OK put it another way. If you polled the fans of all other Championship Clubs who do you want at your club as manager Andy Thorn or Steve Cotterill what do you think they would honestly say? Here is a clue; I know fans from a few other clubs who have seen him interviewed after games and think it is hliarious. One reckoned the interviewer must have interviewed the guy who sells burgers outside by mistake. Now I know am I going to get a barrage of abuse from other people on this site but the truth is we cant dream of getting an experienced manager like him and that is why we are stuck with Thorn.

I think his interviews are also pretty hilarious tbh, he is always sweating buckets. :laugh:

Andy Thorn is still an unknown manager even to other championship sides so the majority would pick Cotterill.

If you polled Coventry fans who they would prefer I think Thorn would come out on top.

He's not taking charge I don't think. Jimmy Floyd Hasslebank is.

I agree the majority would and that is why we will go down. SISU have achieved one thing - they have lowered expectations to zero regarding the activity on the field (some people even find positives in last seasons 7th choice striker Roy O'Donavan) and to the acceptance of a non-manager as manager.

So like us they're sticking with the existing coaching set up

Well you are wrong, you think we will get relegated because the majority of clubs would rather Cotteril over Thorn?

If we are relegated the major factor will be down to the lack of investment in the team not the management.

I don't see what your problem is with AT, at the moment you have only said he lacks experience and is not a proper manager i.e no badges but not really commented on his managerial ability or what you think Cotteril or another manager could do better. He used to play the game you know, it is not like we have appointed a hockey player to manage a football team, it is not uncommon for managers to earn there badges as they go which is what AT is doing.

Yeah, pompey had such a crap first XI in that opening game last season. Except they still had a lot of prem players in there. I don't rate Cotterill, nothing wrong with thinking that. I think he's a man who's rode on his reputation from Cheltenham.

Christ what is wrong with the fans on this site? Know one is saying we all voted for thorn, he was promoted from the back room beacuse SISU refuse to invest in players or staff. he is doing the best he can with what he has, i am sure we all would love a big name manager, we would also love a few new players ...just aint gonna happen though. so can we stop slatting the poor bloke AND SUPORT ANYONE AND EVERYONE WHO TURNS OUT IN SKY BLUE!!

Do you really think Thorn is such a poor manager? Incredible. He's had nothing to work with. I don't find his interviews "hilarious", I find them more sensible than any done by a City manager since Black. He seems to be watching the same game as me! Of the 4 people I sit with, all are 100% behind AT. To paraphrase the man himself, "I wouldn't swap him for any other manager in our division". I firmly believe if we'd have renewed those 3 players contracts in the summer we'd be play-off challengers this season.

Oh yeah, tough at Pompey, was it? How much are Lawrence and Kitson on? Miles more than any of our players!

Yes I think he is an awful manager. Interesting you mention Black. Another mythical success who actually achieved very little and never managed another football club. And that is the problem, Thorn is not good enough to be a manager at this level. He will tow the SISU line, through out platitudes to appease the (dwindling) masses because he knows no-one else will ever employ him. If he was half as good as you think he'd be gone as 23 other clubs would be desperate to employ him.

No my problem with Thorn is he just a SISU puppet. He will say a few things that will please the fans - "I'm going to play entertaining football" post Boothroyd, I love the club blah blah blah. So what he played football - so did Bobby Charlton - check his managerial record.

This is the worst start we have had in 90 years. Tell me if Peter Reid was manager would you honestly not blame him at all. Is Thorn completely blameless whatever happens?

The problem I have with Thorn is we are 100% percent relegated with him in charge and then he will be sacked anyway. With someone with managerial experience we may have a 5% survival chance - I would take the chance.

He's got more out of the players at the club than other managers have, and is working with a massively weakened squad. Agree that avoiding relegation will be tough, but that would be a near certainty with most other managers-and certainly anyone else we could afford. Bring in who you like, unless they bring 3 experienced senior pro's with them it will make little positive impact-and indeed most likely destroy what we do have.

So...would you say that Nigel Adkins is a useless manager, because he's a physio-even less football knowledge required in that role than a scout! Where are Sothampton in the league? Hmm, logic looking a bit shaky now, isn't it? And ask Tranmere fans about their physio-manager, Les Parry: they'll tell you he's got them playing decent football on a minuscule budget through fostering a strong team-spirit and bringing through the youngsters. He loves his club, is a down-to-earth working class football man and displays a sense of humour in most interviews brought about by constantly battling against adversity-sound familiar?

I think you've bought into some mythical idea of what a manager actually is. We're the only nation to put so much power into the hands of one man: across Europe the Director of Football/First Team Manager model prevails. At most big British clubs, if there isn't such a structure then you'll find the manager has a huge team of staff with him that do much of his work-certainly the coaching. Big Sam has as many coaches as players! So to point to Thorn and say "he's not a manager" is missing the point: he has a vast football knowledge from scouting, and superb leadership qualities. He also has massive experience of a long and successful playing career, much of it spent at clubs with no money. He doesn't have a large team of coaches to help him-just SH and Oggy. He's also still our scout-and a man whose judgement of ability would have reaped dividends if backed during the summer. He knows exactly what he needs to give the side what it's missing-he hasn't been given the resources to get the key ingredients. But this is well documented.

He's not a SISU puppet at all. He was actually appointed by Ranson, and Hoffman has revealed that he had long ago discussed with Ranson the idea of Thorn as manager with Ranson in a Director of Football role. To tar him with the same brush as SISU shows how misguided or ill-informed you are. But then ignorance can often lead to such ill-founded sentiments.

It's clear to listen to him what he thinks, but if he comes out and blatantly slags off his bosses he'll be fired. He's also aware that constantly moaning about a lack of resources won't change the situation-indeed it would just give his players an "excuse". And seeing as he's clearly very clever as was as funny, he uses humour to get out little quips that do enough to reveal what he thinks-but nothing that SISU's cronies would pick up on. I guess you missed them too? :laugh:

Thorny is a battler, a passionate man, someone most fans can identify with, NORMAL, a believer in passing football, a leader and the best man-manager we've had in years. He'll learn more tactical tricks as he gains experience, and he's our best chance of avoiding relegation. I just pray that his plan to play the long-game in hope of a Hoffman takeover pays off. After what he's had, even a couple of million to spend would feel like 30m.

Of course Thorn is not completely blameless I never said he was however it won't be majorly his fault is we are relegated, I am one of the first to question some of his decisions and tactics when they are not working out. The way you talk about him you think he knows nothing at the game too which I pointed out he had played the game.
The Reid comparison is not fair as Reid was allowed to sign players with money and big wages in Stern John, Tim Sherwood, Stephen Hughes etc.
If Thorn had been given some backing by the board and we were still doing shit then he would have to shoulder more of the blame.

Name me another manager who we could realistically employ who you think could do a better job given the exact same circumstances as Thorn?

Your comment about Black is borderline ridiculous tbh. He had a 45% win ratio as Coventry manager in 20 games the highest of any City manager in recent times I think, he has then gone on to be assistant at Birmingham, Wigan and Sunderland all achieving relative success for clubs of there size whilst he has been at the club. In those results there was a 6-1 victory a 5-2 victory and multiple of 4-0 victories as well. Wouldn't we love to have scorelines like that now.
