Been playing around with ocPortal, its very powerful but the controls are a bit of a bugger. You can have a forum as well as a content management site like the Telegraph or Observer linked in with a shopping cart etc.
Jmoola is another one.

No, there is not enough content for a portal. So unless there are loads of articles it's pointless.
It is quicker, and it will cost for a license but if it is better...
Mate, it's good enough as it is. You're nowhere near GMK levels of server problems, not by a country mile. It's your cash, but unless you're making a profit here (which I doubt), or it will save you significant hassle don't waste your money on us arseholes.
