Players out of contract (1 Viewer)

The unknown is who can we attract and at what cost to strengthen the team?

Out of those I would consider McFadz, Hyam and Kelly as squad players. Depends how much they want in order to stay and if they are happy dropping down the pecking order? Also have they got other offers? It is not just about what the club wants - players have a big say in it too.

To be fair its Shipleys lack of performance thats got him that accolade

Wilson, McFadz and Kelly were all deemed not good enough for this level by many fans before a ball was kicked. Many of our fans do have a problem understanding contracts, budgets, transfer windows and complexity of signing quality players and time it takes to rebuild a squad. Their opinion swings dramatically on a game to game basis depending on the results. The "We would have won if we played two up top" is a prime example of their hypothetical theories becoming set in stone fact.

2 up front beats Sheffield Wednesday or shall we go 1 up again and probably expect the same result as last time ?

We have beat teams who have played two forwards against us. It doesnt guarantee success is the point. Its like some of our fans just couldn't see past 4-4-2.

Controlling the midfield is what normally wins games along with taking your chances. It is not like we haven't created chances.

Can't believe people saying let hyam go. He's had a bad month and a half. He prob needs taking out but we have no one to replace him so he's gotta play back into form.

So short sighted saying release a player cuz he's had 5 poor games. Up until end of Nov he was Mr reliable

Creativity is an issue for me as well as leaking goals and defending our main creative player O’Hare has zero end product

I guess it all depends on how much is in the pot to improve. If we've got the money to build a whole new backline then I'd consider losing McFadz and extending Hyam to try and sell to L1 but if it's like this summer where we have 1 or 2 big signings and a Buch of gambles then we'll be better off keeping them on as relatively inexpensive championship squad players.

Mcfazdean has really exceeded expectations and hasn’t looked out of it at this level - he compensates his lack of pace with experience unlike Hyam. I’m sure he will resign for a year as will Kelly.

You can’t really take Jones back unless it’s a pay as you play contract. He’s hardly going to be in demand elsewhere

The problem is you don’t know how much players get paid so no one really knows what’s worth it and what isn’t

If Biamou was a very low earner and with crowds back I’d offer him a lower deal to resign and haul him out if my job is on the line so people can clap him and sing the silly song. I’m not actually joking

Its great playing 2 up top IF we have 2 decent players playing there that cut a goal threat and also they have to have quality balls to them too

3 ACL ? He’s not proven even at league 1 level we’re not a charity it’s all hands on deck we can’t be messing about paying wages on people who don’t play for what ever reason
Well for a start it was his other knee, we have players currently who have hardly kicked a ball in anger yet, Michael Rose so shall we dump him too ?
Jones has had terrible luck but he’ll get fit again by summer, why just let a good player go free after nursing him to fitness for three years. I’d give him a one year deal with a years option and let’s see how he fairs

McFadzean probably deserves another year. His experience has been valuable. Would like to keep Kelly too, he's only 30 but injuries are a slight concern. No argument that we're a better side with him in the team.

Biamou - I like the guy but we need to be looking at improving what we have up front. I think he does a job as an emergency option, so I guess it comes down to what we'd have to pay him Vs what we'd pay for someone else to provide emergency cover. As you say, may be a cheap option for a year extension with a loan coming in to provide greater competition for Walker & Godden.

People don't appreciate the difference between quality and form. Apart from the last few matches he has been excellent. He is a good Championship quality player and has potential to go higher. People were saying Dabo wasn't good enough earlier jn the season.

I am confident the club will be seeking to extend Hyam's contract.

Have to admit McFadzean haha surprised me this season. He possibly deserves a contract too.

I'd offer contracts to Kelly, hyam and Jones. I'm torn on Biamou, he wouldn't be a bad 4th choice but we must bring in someone better than Godden and Walker if we want to progress next season.

When you look at the list defense in particular and add in the loans, if hyam or Fadz don't get offered another contract we're having to replace 4 of our back 5.

RWB
Dabo
Da Costa

CB
Osti - loan
Hyam - out of contract
Mcfadzean - out of contract
Rose
Pask + kids

LWB
McCallum - loan
Giles - loan

Good luck with that on your budget.

Just for clarity, there’s:

Camp (imminent)
McFadzean
Kelly
Hyam - 1-year option
Bakayoko
Jones
Thompson
Biamou

Out of those, I think I’d exercise Hyam’s 1-year option and would consider 1-year extensions for Kelly and Biamou. However, I get the feeling Matty James is coming in to replace Kelly altogether, especially with mounting injury worries. Biamou can hang around as 4th choice striker if he wishes.
Is showing that Shipley is out if contract too.

Exactly. Potentially playing two up top can make the midfield and defence more vulnerable. So those two have to increase the goal capability. Also you still have to get the ball to them.

I think if our two Godden and Walker had both been fit we would have seen them playing together - at least for part of a match.

I checked that out, he’s contracted til 2022.

To talk through my thinking on the CB situation, I think Fadz has done reasonably well but to play the style of play we want to, we have to push up the pitch and as such we need quicker CBs. He will be 34 by the time next season starts and I’d imagine he’s one of the higher earners in the squad. We need to freshen up the back line regardless and I see it as a bit of an opportunity to do that. Hyam I’d keep on his 1-year extension as cover for all three slots across the back. Would hope Rose will be fully fit by the season end so we can see whether he’s up to the task - that would also have a bearing on the above.

Assuming we stay up:

Fadz: I’d give him either one or two years. He’s been excellent this season and seems like a good character to have around anyway.

Kelly: Let him go so he can get first team football if we keep James. Give him another year if not.

Hyam: Take the option, I’d hope he’s back up next season.

Jones: Offer him training to get fit again with a very low basic wage and lots of community obligations. See where we are after that.

Baka, Max, Thompson: let go

The wages is a really good point. Ideally we can get three new CBs (possibly including Rose) and he’s back up but if it’s him or a first team player I’d let him go.

Why wouldn’t you re-sign Jones ?

because he's barely played a game for us in three years, is totally untested at this level (or even L1) and had three massive injuries in succession.

Pay as you play if we did. if he broke down again just the medical costs would be massive.

Camp (will be released once Marosi is fit)
Baka (release)
Bartlett (maybe another year on a development contract)
Biamou (would be looking at other options before offering anything. If we couldn't find anyone maybe a year as emergency back-up)
Bremang (release)
J Burroughs (1-2 years on a development contract)
Hyam (use 1 yr extension for now)
Jones (pay as you play)
Kelly (1 year unless we can bring in an improvement like james or walsh. Like his leadership though. I've assumed Sheaf is a done deal)
McFadz (see what's available and look for a younger alternative. Already not the quickest and at an age where sometimes the 'legs go' without any warning. If we can't find anyone we're happy with give him a year)
Newton (playing regular U23 and with 2 LWB on loan and our LB on loan and out of favour 1-2 year development)
N'Gandu (maybe extra year development - hasn't progressed as much as hoped)
Thompson (release)
Williams (release)
Young (release - doing well on loan but at 22 we need him to be pushing for the first team for him to stay)

Rowe? (playing regular U23 so another 1-2 year development contract)
Lafferty? (release)

There’s surely no way we will offer Jones a contract. Yet to prove himself at league one level and he isn’t going to have improved after 3 years out.

Biamou has to go.

Fadz and Kelly would be ideal however I heard they had a big wage increase when we were promoted so depends how the funds work out.

Hyam has the second half of the season to prove his worth. He’s been poor but unfortunate that he’s found himself on the left of the 3.

I posted our xG & xGA of 2 up top vs 1 up top a while back & in short yes, our xG improves a little with 2 up but also our xGA goes up significantly.

Just letting Jodie Jones go would be ridiculous extending his contract a year on the same terms has to be the sensible thing to do and having a year option would protect the club to a degree. I think the lad has an uphill battle I don’t doubt his ability and potential but coming back from a three year absence is a tough ask but worth another twelve months to see how he goes.

I don't think we will be replacing as many as people want on here, its all about money and if we try to replace the whole back line we start next season trying to get them up to speed with the 'Robins' way

Ideally 2 Center halves at least 1 left footed, If we get that Josh Reid I think it is then we either have faith in Mason or sign a new LWB, A CM or 2, An AM and a 4th striker who can push the others unlike Bakayoko

The club will get comprehensive medical reports before they make a decision
If Jones isn't offered a contract here lots of clubs would be interested as there is no transfer fee unless the player refuses an offer on at least the same terms as the previous deal

Yep, real dilemma with Jodi.

On the one hand, yes it's a massive risk but on the other he'd shown he had significant potential, enough to warrant Leeds' interest. You can just imagine the usual suspects reaction if we release him & he comes good.
Look at Duncan Watmore now after not being offered a new deal by Sunderland. True that was largely down to his astronomical wage but from what I understand they didn't even negotiate reduced terms.
