Well actually Leave voters are especially pro monarchy. Fine with unelected officials as head of state, not fine with them in the EU.

Interesting. So it’s leave voters. Ok so which political parties have had in their manifesto to leave the EU then?

Pretty comprehensive on Statista. Like it or not it’s still a part of the country.

Whether those levels remain after the Queen passes I doubt, but for now a vast majority appear in favour

What on Earth are you on about? Look at the polling anyway-Labour voters split with Tories heavily in favour

Are EU officials not at least appointed to the role on account of some kind of merit for the position?

Hmmmm…Von Der Leyen ?

Anyway this is a Jubilee thread not another brexit one. I was just making the point that while you’re right, Leave voters could be classed as hypocrites, the argument could work in reverse ie Remain voters not wanting an unelected head of state but happy with unelected EU officials.

She was appointed by national leaders and elected by the European Parliament.

Bit like Brezhnev was elected by the USSR then?

Was she not still appointed to the position? There is no real comparison to be made.

Looks like grendel will need to vote for someone else. Interesting opinions from a senior Tory. Everyone else going no shit Sherlock 550C79CA-6C58-45D4-ADE5-D3595B957ADF.jpeg

I don’t remember claiming to be a socialist. I think the HoS should be elected, you think birth should decide.

That’s about it really

I don’t mind the history of royalty and enjoyed visiting the sights in London. But the whole people worshipping side of things irks me. They, like celebrities, eat, piss, shit and die like the rest of us. I had to do a visit to a Duchess for work and the boot licking was cringeworthy and makes me uncomfortable.

It doesn’t sit right the wealth they have when people are on the streets. But then again, nor does £4b being spent on a football club or £500k a week being shovelled into Haaland’s pocket. I acknowledge that football money isn’t raised from taxes but still. Wealth distribution is wrong across the board.

I won’t be watching much of it or bowing to Liz. But I’m thankful for the extra day off which will be spent playing with the kids and then watching my favourite ever film in tribute to Ray Liotta.

You started with the comparison…I just replied. They are obviously very different situations. My point regarding VDL was responding to your comment that people get appointed on merit

Even if you disagree with the appointment it’s still one up from being born into the role. Go back a few hundred years and the argument was they were handpicked by God.

The truth is we as a country can do a lot better

A lifetime of waving, eating banquets and living in palaces. A huge cheer any time you show your face anywhere, really you'd have to be a complete cretin like Charles/Harry/Andrew to mess it up. It's one of the few jobs where 'service' counts as living in immense privilege for no merit
Hard to disagree.

Well basically to be a proper social democracy with a weaker class divide. The Dutch colleagues I once worked with observed quickly that we have a class system ‘on crack’ as my professor put it.

So you despise most of Scandinavia then?

A few more countries we won’t move to then
