The chances of making the play-offs now is a very long shot. Not being smug, not being negative, just reflecting on the reality that is staring us in the face.

And before anyone states that we are only 3 points behind 6th place, 1 win etc. etc., let me explain why I say what I say. It is all rational and reasoned thinking and not knee jerk reaction.

Also bear in mind that TM himself talked of our having to win 7 games to reach the play-offs. That was a few games back now.

If that is true that means we now need to win 7 out of 11 games. That is an incredible ask and all but impossible task for a team that has only only won 3 out of 17.

Anyway, we need to forget about the 3 point gap and need to look at the bigger picture, that of how many points are needed to be in 6th place at the end of the season.

You have to look at the stats and that brings it all home. Here is a table of how many points have been needed to reach 6th place.

2014/15 6th place - 69 points

2013/14 6th place - 74 points

2012/13 6th place - 74 points

2011/12 6th place - 73 points

2010/11 6th place - 71 points

2009/10 6th place - 80 points

2008/09 6th place - 76 points

2007/08 6th place - 76 points

2006/07 6th place - 75 points

2005/06 6th place - 71 points

2004/05 6th place - 71 points

2003/04 6th place - 73 points

2002/03 6th place - 81 points

2001/02 6th place - 78 points

2000/01 6th place - 75 points

That is the last 15 seasons. You can easily keep going back and back (have looked) and it's the same picture.

Lowest 6th place total is 69 and that was last season. So, let's be really optimistic here and go for the lowest possible total and take that as our target for a minute.

We have 52 points at the moment and would need to get to 69 come the end of the season to reach the very minimum required. That's 17 points from 11 games.

That would equate to:

5 wins, 2 draws, 4 defeats.

6 wins, 5 defeats.

Remember, this is the very minimum! Does anyone honestly believe, hand on heart, that after just 3 wins in 17 games we can suddenly win 5 out of 11 and only lose 4 more?

I think we just have to face reality and say the dream looks all but over.

Still to play we have

Blackpool A

Swindon H

Peterborough A

Colchester H

Gillingham A

Wigan A

Millwall H

Bradford H

Doncaster A

Sheff Utd H

Oldham A

It's going to take a massive turnaround in our fortunes to even reach the minimum requirement.

If you look at our latest pattern the last 10 matches, we drew against Walsall then lost 3 in a row, then drew against Port Vale, beat Bury, but then lost 4 in a row.

We have lost 7 out of the last 10. I think it is now all over for us, sadly.

As I say, don't look at the 3 points we are behind, look at the points we now need. That is the key stat and that is the stat that brings it all home and now of course we have 2 teams to overtake too. It's out of our hands completely now unless other teams fail.

If someone had said a few weeks back we had coming up, Scunthorpe H, Fleetwood H, Rochdale H and Shrewsbury A and we wouldn't get a single point from any of the the 4 games, we would have laughed very loudly in their faces.

Sadly I think we have blown our chances and just how much psychological damage has been done in our being top 6 all season and then suddenly being kicked out and overtaken by 2 teams in just a few days. The effect of that plus the 7 losses in 10 games has surely left us completely on the ropes.

And then look at what TM has said and that being according to him, that we actually need to win 7 more games. 7 out of 11!!

I think he knows in his own heart that we have blown it. :(

And in the unlikely event that we do reach that exhalted 6th place, we then have the play-offs so even then only a 25% chance of promotion.

I am one of those that says it isn't over until it's over. And I still stand by that statement.

However after last night's showing and I'm sure previous performances were similar we simply haven't got the bottle to grind out results when teams have sussed us out.

I would swallow my pride and bring back JOB. Too many luxury players like Cole, Lameries, Maddison, Murphy are in the side when we need someone to battle for every 50/50, put their head where others wouldn't put their feet and see where that takes us. Heard he's playing well in Scunny so let's get home back for the remainder of gains and see what could be done.

If we lose on Sat then I'm afraid I'll be in the 'Mowbray out' crowd. It's simply inexcusable.

I think you're right Otis. The important question now is why? Why have we blown it?

Mowbray has made some tactical and other mistakes for sure. But I beleive there are two main reasons for our sudden loss of form: four successive injuries to important central defenders; and the replacement of Kent with Hunt instead of Hooi. I suspect that that Mowbray was told at the last minute there were insufficient funds to sign Hooi and he'd have to look elsewhere. If this is true, then Tony Mowbray is not responsible for either of the main factors affecting our performances. The sale of Maddison may not have helped the players or Mowbray's morale either. Maybe we should be calling for Chris Anderson's head, not Tony Mowbray's?

Look at the form table, last 10 matches, 22nd out of 24. If we were down near the bottom that would be relegation form

Otis, your list is how many points 6th place got, rather than the amount of points required to finish 6th. Last 2 seasons 66 and 68 points were enough for 6th. Only 3 seasons have required over 74. Easy 3 points on Sat and we're back in the chase.:):):)

So, we should call for someone to be sacked based on a theory of yours?

I said "if true" and "maybe?". It's not just a theory of mine anyway. Others have posted similar beliefs. Are you saying that you believe what Hooi alleges he was told: we didn't sign him because we were about to sign a wide player from Liverpool?

Eh? Surely we have to go by how many points the team in 6th place got?

No team has ever made the play-offs on less than 69 points. That is the stat we have to look at.

Teams only need to get enough points to finish above 7th, so the better indicator for how many points you'd need to finish 6th is to look at the points 7th got and add one more, or rely on goal difference and get the same points.

Getting more than you need is showing off. I like to get by by doing the least amount possible. Probably why I'm replying when I should be working.

Pete I genuinelly cant remember anything like that being said when Hooi didnt sign, where was that quoted?
That said Hooi or Hunt, Mowbray and Venus decide and as much as you could speculate whether it was cost or not, it could easily be down to whether Mowbray liked him or not.

Personally I dont think Hooi would have added a lot more at present, although yes I accept more than Hunt, as we seem to need some bite and steel, rather than yet more luxury players, who as good as they are dont seem to be able to roll their sleevs up and battle which is what we need at the moment.

rubbish imo

does it look good? course not. will it be easy? cours enot

BUT ITS FUCKING 3 PTS diff at minute! only reason you doubt is because of terrible form, but if that changes all of a sudden cov are the team with momentum going into final stages

wallsall and gills on bad runs too, whos to say they aint the ones who drop out and likes of barnsley and bradford get in?

As others have pointed out, if we had been in patchy form all season but still 8th, 3 points from the playoffs, nobody would be making all this fuss.

Also, I think there's a bit of a psychological pattern with Cov. We have all been used to getting excited about managers who go through strong spells but end up calling for their heads after subsequent bad form.

In recent memory, Adams, Coleman, Boothroyd, Thorn and Presley all had good runs to varying degrees, but then ran into trouble before getting sacked. Our current run reminds me of Aidy's great start then demise. So some of the reaction to our current slump is based on experience where it inevitable ends with the manager getting the sack fr the sake of experiment, I'd like us to not take that option this time and give him a contract extension.

But I do not consider that likely.

I haven't posted much in the last couple of months because I don't want to be branded Mr Negative, but it isn't JUST getting 3 point on Sat and everything is on again ... its been going pear shaped for a long time and one win does not suddenly mean we've turned a corner. Surely we should all have realised that when the 6-0 thrasing was followed inevitabley by FOUR straight defeats.

You know, its a bloody funny thing - most seasons there is a relegation battle to fight, something to actually get excited about in a perverse sort of way. But, assuming we do scrape enough points, I cannot get excited about making the play offs simply because - as I've always thought - this team is not currently mentally, physically or tactically consistant enough to put together two wins out of three games.

3 points on Saturday would be brilliant for sure, but like you say it is so much bigger than that. 3 points is just one single game. As I keep saying, we need a run of results. Are we capable of 4 wins on the bounce? I would say almost definitely not.

We would in all probability have to win at least the next 2 matches before I would be even starting to believe even a hint of the play-offs were back on.

It's not negative, as you say it is realism.

3 wins in 17.

7 losses out of the last 10

2 goals scored in the last 4 games

Averaging less than a point a game.

We need a brilliant run now.

Reality is right now we are playing as poorly as at any time under any of the managers we have had since we dropped out the top flight. I'm not saying this because of the results but the manner we are playing/ not playing. We have better players individually (at least on paper) but little or no team spirit

Reality is also....1st dozen games we were as good playing football as well as at any time in last 20 years blowing away gillinhham to go top. Coming back from 2 down to destroy Peterborough. Last dozen games we have not played good football, have lost that team spirit and appear to have lost the commitment.
How can there be such a difference?

It is indeed a massive concern.

Team spirit and belief are so massive to a club.

We have players whose heads drop, don't track back, don't roll up their sleeves and don't have the stomach for a fight.

We need 11 players with the ethic and mindset of Vincelot and Stokes. Have that and it would be a start at least.

we were better vsrochdale than we were vs fleetwood or barnsley and now we were better still vs shrews

beat blackpool and no we dont need to pop open champagne but it would certainly be another step in right direction

and luckily for us we are not miles away from 3rd let alone 6th so all to play for

Try to be more positive - if we beat Blackpool away in front of 3000 beer-edup City fans, we'll have stopped the rot and it may lead to a complete shift in momentum!

Been saying for weeks we should rest Ricketts! Been hard for me to accept because earlier in the campaign I had him down as one of the candidates for player of the season.

The change has been remarkable. And as I say, I believe it is resting him, not dropping him.

Give him a couple of games out of the firing line to recharge his batteries.

The bloke is 34 and is playing every single game.

We can hope, can't we.

A win on Saturday would be brilliant, but it wouldn't change my thinking.

As I keep on saying, we need a run. 3 wins on the bounce and then we are right back in with a good chance. Just can't see that 3 on the bounce though, I really can't.

At the moment I would be happy with just stopping the rot. It has stopped being fun again being a City fan.
