Academy future? (9 Viewers)

Just need to wait for the contradictory statement. If the club is trying to get something long term sorted, but they sort it with wasps etc then it's clearly because the club wouldn't commit long term...

You think the club were trying to sign up long term as in 10-20 years?

From the conversation I had, this is very much part of the CCC sports strategy and would have happened regardless of whether our academy were on a long contract or not.

All part of the city of rugby initiative by CCC, they want Coventry to become renowned for Rugby so no surprise they want Wasps to have exclusive use of the best facilities in the city.

You must know? Didnt he say a long term deal?

You have lost me there. I thought he was just looking at another 2 year deal like with everything else that gets signed up.
To be honest a was really chuffed and surprised when Jones was signed for 4 years.
Felt like the longest commitment yet
Although. To be honest we all know what footballers contracts mean!

Are the facilities at Higgs good enough if we became a PL club or our Academy achieved top status?

Did he specify how long?
I haven't heard that interview.
He didn't say, it was towards the end of the interview I posted the link to last week:

Anderson was in the phone ind, Friday night (around 25 mins in), only caught thr last couple of minutes but he mentioned that they have told highs they want to stay long term, he was also very non committal about the stadium situation.

Thanks Stu
Seems strange to commit long term to the academy but not the Ricoh. When the new stadium idea includes an academy
Hopefully this means long term commitment to the Ricoh as well.
I really do think they need to get round the table now with wasps and start sharing facilities, staff and costs before it is too late.

That's presuming wasps will want to share facilities, costs, and staff. Personally I don't think they will, they have their costed business which they keep telling us its thriving.

Seems to me the thinking all round is a lot longer term since Anderson has come in. Jones is the longest contract since David Bell, young players are being signed who won't be ready for the first team for a couple of years at least and there is talk from the club of staying at the Ricoh and Higgs long term.

Coventry Telegraph said:
What I intend to do is for this football club to play its games in Coventry, for this football club to have a stable home.

Mr Anderson made clear he did not think there were any “insurmountable” challenges standing in the way of a long-term Ricoh Arena stay.

“I think there isn’t anything that’s impossible to overcome. Are there insurmountable issues? Absolutely not.

“These are issues we can tackle together. It doesn’t help anyone to lay down markers, we just need to understand each other and then we’ll get somewhere.”

However, the new man also insisted the club did have a ‘Plan B’ should a long term stay at the Ricoh Arena be ruled out.

Coventry Telegraph said:
The man running Coventry City FC off the pitch has said the club does not need to own its own stadium and can be successful at the Ricoh Arena - but not on the current terms.

Chris Anderson, managing director of CCFC added that he was confident a mutually beneficial long-term deal could be agreed with Ricoh Arena landlords Wasps.

Speaking exclusively to the Telegraph, he said the club would be looking for enhanced terms in almost 20 different areas in order to come up with a deal which could allow the Sky Blues to return to the Premier League one day.

“We need a relationship where we share certain things - the Compass deal around food and drink revenue, advertising, naming rights, car parking, a club shop.

"There are about 17 separate categories where we would have to work out an agreement or partnership.

“But it’s not something that can happen overnight, these things take time.

“I think there can be a solution that doesn’t involve us owning the stadium.

“If you add a reasonable stadium solution to what we have at the moment, that’s a really health situation.”

He added: “We’re still not getting some revenues from the stadium deal. They’re not where they need to be.

“We’re at a point where we are starting to be self sustaining. In Germany we would say ‘we’re still baking small roles’, which means we have to live within our means. The current stadium revenues don’t let us go a whole lot beyond that.

“If we are able to improve the deal at the stadium, we will be able to put more money on the pitch.”

But it came from the Telegraph so must be shit......

Don't think it matters if the facilities are good enough at Higgs, as if we achieved PL status we would surely have instant access to funds to pay for facilities that were good enough?

I would be surprised if they were not interested in increasing incomes and reducing costs.

They will get increased income if we sign a long term rental deal they'll make more from the stadium sponsorship, rent and matchday earnings than they will save from from sharing a ticket office and giving us half the income.

They can do both by giving us a bigger share of revenue not half.
Sharing staff and facilities whikst tying us down long term for the reasons you stated

Why would they want to do that? They can earn more money by screwing us, they have the monopoly on stadiums, there's very little staffing we could share, and what facilities? Offices at the Ricoh? They would charge us rent for that. Shop? The ricoh shop is barely big enough for one club, its nowhere near big enough to share, besides we have alreafy commissioned it out, it costs us nothing. Ticketing? We both have contracts with ticket master. The stewards are the same anyway. Medical staff? Great who has the physio when we both play on the same day? Media? Great we won't recruit to kierans vacent post, oh, so what happens when we play on the same day? The current staffing levels for both clubs are already doing full time jobs, cuts mean stretching staff too fine, which club do you think will get the raw deal of that?

Why would wasps want to give us more revenues? They've just signed someone who is going to be the highest paid player in England, they have interest to pay, bonds to pay back as well as a rugby club and stadium to fund. They know the likelihood of getting to the PL is remote so they won't be taking that into consideration when handing out revenues or not.

It seems to be the new throw away line, "yeah they just need to negotiate incremental revenues and sharing staff..."

A joint academy/training facility
Physiotherapists
Doctors
Sports psychologists
Marketing Staff
Advertising
Promotional schemes
A joint contract with Ticket master
Ticket schemes/offers encouraging fans to attend the Ricoh for both Rugby and football.

Get us tied down to a 10 year deal
Share the above costs and increase acces to the increase revenue that will come as a result of the above uncertainty getting removed

Great idea - but Wasps don't want it. They want it all for themselves and they've been given a massive boost along the way by CCC in essentially giving them a platform to come in and railroad everyone else into submission.

A joint academy/training facility - we already have a training facility which is paid for and we own, why would we move? That would require us to put in significant capital in the millions. When they move in at higgs and the pool is built the indoor pitches will be gone and that will mean the end of our academy.

Physiotherapists - already got them, if you share and reduce what happens on matchdays? We often play home/away at the same time?

Doctors - already have a club doctor. As above.

Sports psychologists - as above

Marketing Staff - as above. We spend far less on marketing than wasps, joining costs here would in all probability see us subsidising them. Are you saying we shouldn't recruit to kierans vacent post?

Advertising - I can only see losses here. Company A can sponsor us for £x or wasps for £y. Jointly selling advertising would need to be a discount so will probably lead to a loss. Wasps won't want to share sponsorship, they will want to dominate in this area because they need the money.

Promotional schemes - again, we need all the revenue we can get, there won't be a big enough increase in tickets to cover reduction in tickets

A joint contract with Ticket master - probably won't see that much of a saving given that its mainly paid via customers booking fee

Ticket schemes/offers encouraging fans to attend the Ricoh for both Rugby and football - again, we need all the revenue we can get, there won't be a big enough increase in tickets to cover reduction in tickets. Plus neither club wants spit fan base, they want them committed to their brand, brad loyalty and all that.

Get us tied down to a 10 year deal

Sorry don, that's all pie in the sky.

On top of this, you'd want cheap rent £150-200k per annum, and what 25-30% stadium sponsorship (£250-300k pa), and all matchay revenues (c£250). Wasps could easily charge us £400k rent , not give us a cut of the stadium sponsorship and keep the matday revenue and be £800k the better off without making it complicated. Plus forgetting all else they see us as competition for peoples leisure time spend (tickets) and sponsorship, they will want to dominate and maximise this, not share.

So going further on your proposals
So physios, we have 2, let's say one wasps have 2, we do a deal and share the resources, so wheres the saving? Going down to 3 physios. OK so matchday who has 2 and who has 1? Well rugby has bigger squads so they will probably have to the 2 and us the 1, so then we were worse off than before because we obviously needed 2 physios, otherwise we wouldn't have 2 physios.

Club doctor, I presume we have 2 each. Saving? Down to 1? Matchday, who do they go with? Us or wasps? In fact it would surprise me if its part of the fl and RFU rules that you have to have a doctor present

I could go on.

If its that much of a saving I'm surpised Leicester city and tigers haven't already joint all their backroom functions, or Swansea and osprays, or other clubs. They are missing out on huge savings.
