Coventry City Transfers: Carl Baker could follow Michael Doyle back to Ricoh
Coventry City boss Mark Robins is believed to be keen to bring former fans' favourite Carl Baker back to the Ricoh Arena.
The Telegraph understands that the Sky Blues' boss is hoping to secure a return for the skilful forward, whom he made captain when he inherited the player back in his first spell in charge in 2012.
Although Baker still has a year left on his contract at Portsmouth, the 34-year-old is believed to be eager to come back to the club and Pompey might be persuaded to cut short his stay at Fratton Park after securing promotion back to League One.
As one of the higher earners at the League Two champions, manager Paul Cook may well see Coventry's interest as an opportunity to strengthen his squad elsewhere after stepping up a level, with clear designs on a return to the Championship.
Baker still lives locally to Coventry and has spent the last 12 months car sharing with another former City skipper, Michael Doyle, who last week agreed to return to the club, becoming Robins's first signing of the close season.
Doyle's desire to be closer to home and his young family was a major factor in his decision to re-sign for the Sky Blues. And the travelling and time away from his family is understood to hold similar concerns for Baker.
New Coventry City signing Michael Doyle will be great for Sky Blues, insists Carl Baker
Like Doyle, Baker remains supremely fit for his age, making 46 appearances and scoring an impressive nine goals for Pompey to help them win the League Two title this season.
Baker had five years at City between 2009 and 2014 before switching to MK Dons, whom he helped get promoted from League One to the Championship, where he enjoyed one season back in the second tier before signing for League Two Pompey last summer.
Former City boss Tony Mowbray had toyed with re-signing the attacking midfielder who told the Telegraph last June of his desire to come back (see Baker talk about his love for Coventry City in the video interview above that he did with the Telegraph last summer).
“The fans, since the day I left, have been absolutely amazing," he said before joining Pompey last year.
Coventry City boss Mark Robins should now go and get Carl Baker to join Michael Doyle
"The amount of messages I have had on Facebook and Twitter has been overwhelming and it does make me want to come back because I can see how proud they are and how much they want me to come back, and I appreciate that and it would be lovely.
“Whether it will happen or not is a totally different story. I have not spoken to Coventry at all so I think it might be dead in the water which is such a shame because it’s local to me, it’s a club passionate to my heart, it’s the club my kids support and it would have been nice."
