Coventry City Transfers: Carl Baker could follow Michael Doyle back to Ricoh

Coventry City boss Mark Robins is believed to be keen to bring former fans' favourite Carl Baker back to the Ricoh Arena.

The Telegraph understands that the Sky Blues' boss is hoping to secure a return for the skilful forward, whom he made captain when he inherited the player back in his first spell in charge in 2012.

Although Baker still has a year left on his contract at Portsmouth, the 34-year-old is believed to be eager to come back to the club and Pompey might be persuaded to cut short his stay at Fratton Park after securing promotion back to League One.

As one of the higher earners at the League Two champions, manager Paul Cook may well see Coventry's interest as an opportunity to strengthen his squad elsewhere after stepping up a level, with clear designs on a return to the Championship.

Baker still lives locally to Coventry and has spent the last 12 months car sharing with another former City skipper, Michael Doyle, who last week agreed to return to the club, becoming Robins's first signing of the close season.

Doyle's desire to be closer to home and his young family was a major factor in his decision to re-sign for the Sky Blues. And the travelling and time away from his family is understood to hold similar concerns for Baker.

New Coventry City signing Michael Doyle will be great for Sky Blues, insists Carl Baker
Like Doyle, Baker remains supremely fit for his age, making 46 appearances and scoring an impressive nine goals for Pompey to help them win the League Two title this season.

Baker had five years at City between 2009 and 2014 before switching to MK Dons, whom he helped get promoted from League One to the Championship, where he enjoyed one season back in the second tier before signing for League Two Pompey last summer.

Former City boss Tony Mowbray had toyed with re-signing the attacking midfielder who told the Telegraph last June of his desire to come back (see Baker talk about his love for Coventry City in the video interview above that he did with the Telegraph last summer).

“The fans, since the day I left, have been absolutely amazing," he said before joining Pompey last year.

Coventry City boss Mark Robins should now go and get Carl Baker to join Michael Doyle
"The amount of messages I have had on Facebook and Twitter has been overwhelming and it does make me want to come back because I can see how proud they are and how much they want me to come back, and I appreciate that and it would be lovely.

“Whether it will happen or not is a totally different story. I have not spoken to Coventry at all so I think it might be dead in the water which is such a shame because it’s local to me, it’s a club passionate to my heart, it’s the club my kids support and it would have been nice."

Baker is pretty much saying come and get me.

When did he say that?

Do we know if Robins wants him?

I think the quotes used were from last summer... I wouldn't expect him to make similar noises this year as he is still under contract at Pompey

If Robins made him captain when he was here before and Baker loves the club it all adds up, plus it's another player who knows how to get out of the division and has played a full season so the age thing isn't a huge concern.

called this.

Day after early bird ends, ex player comes out and says he wants to come back and kids are season ticket holders.

Its all PR !!

:happy::happy::happy::happy::happy:

First off, early bird hasn't ended.

Secondly, it was said a year ago.

Thirdly, did he say his kids were season ticket holders?

Almost as if your whole post is incorrect and you don't have a point ;)

I'd rather we signed players for the longer term, but Baker was good at this level (though his last few months with us were pretty poor).

Has he spoken to the club / agreed terms or anything?
All I know is details are being negotiated. Pompey are losing a fair few players even though they got promoted, that's the reason for the hold up. Could fall through and we move on, Robins isn't messing around it seems.

Isn't that tapping him up? He is under contract with them but we are discussing terms with him before he has been released?

You have just said "He's coming back", now "it could fall through"...

I'd take it. Knows the club, likes the club, plays in a position we have a few kids coming through in that could do with some tutelage, has performed as recently as last season at this level.

In all the excitement, 2 points to make:

1) people seem to be having selective memory syndrome - when he was here, most people would moan about for his tendency to have one good game in 10 and to duck out of tackles - he wasn't a great for us by any means and didn't make any impact in the season we were relegated from the Championship
2) they do say in football "never go back" - look at McSheff - how many times is it the case that the returning player does better second time round than the first time?

That said, he'd be a lot better than some of the dross we picked last season so would only be an improvement as things stand.

I think in his last season here, he was outstanding. It may have been the armband that did that.
He's also been a fan favourite at MK and Pompey so has obviously continued that form.
