If England failed again Root would have to stand down
And be replaced by who!?

I think if Wood isn't fit they will include Finn. Him and Ball would likely be the backup seamers with TRJand Woakes competing for the third seamer role.England coach Trevor Bayliss does not expect new faces in Ashes squad
Worrying but I guess Hameed expected to return, Rashid and the likes of Finn & Wood!?

I do not think they fancy Rashid. He's been given a go and not selected again - I think he just bowls too many bad balls, releases pressure and they want a second spinner who can tie up an end hence the selection of Dawson. Wonder if they will pick Crane as the reserve spinner - it would be a huge call to do so.
Hameed has scored so few runs that it would be a massive punt to take him.
I'd have Crane over Dawson!
Think Hameed will go, wonder if Ballance will be back on the radar ?
I would have taken Foakes as back up keeper but the theory they're saying suggests Buttler who hardly scored any red ball runs this season.
I agree regarding Crane however he is 20, has played 4-5 first class games all season and has average 40 with the ball. He looked good in the T20 game but it would be a huge leap to pick him at Sydney. The're likelier to go with someone a bit more experienced but they don't rate Rashid. I suspect they might go to Dawson as a back-up. Nobody else in the frame really - as with Crane you cannot pluck somebody from nowhere and stick them in th eTest side Down Under e.g. Danny Briggs, Kerrigan, Adam Riley etc. But a backup for Moeen is needed and personally I would select Ollie Rayner.
They seem to really rate Ballance, as with the likes of Crawley and Hick in the 1990s they are involved in a wish-fulfilment exercise, hoping he will transfer his county form onto the international circuit. Plus in his first season he hit 4 hundreds so they're hoping that his increasingly long spell of poor form will evaporate and he'll come good. I doubt it somehow. Maybe he'd be better at 5 rather than three.
Following the logic above, they will not want to select a backup keeper with little experience especially as, with our batting so poor, we might want to select the reserve keeper as a specialist batsman. This is exactly what happened with Buttler in India and I can see them selecting him again for this very reason. Has got a fair few caps, has scored runs for us, knows the team environment, not a big step for him. Bayliss really likes Buttler so for that reason alone I think theyll select him, partly to compensate Bayliss who seems to be ignored on other topics such as balance of the team, Root's place in the order, attacking batsman in the top 3, Moeen being second spinner, etc.
If they rang me up and asked me, I'd give them this answer:
Cook
Stoneman
Root
Moeen
Ballance
Stokes
Bairstow
Woakes
Roland-Jones
Broad
Anderson
Hameed, Buttler, Rayner, Finn, Wood.
Moeen has scored more runs that the likes of Westley, Ballance, Malan etc. Wasted at 8 - we need runs higher up the order. For me it is a toss-up between Malan and Ballance. Unfortunately I think it's too late to call up someone like Samit Patel or Joe Clarke.
We've picked 2 spinners at both Adelaide and Sydney before now, so it could happen again i.e. that the pitch demands a second spinner. Or Moeen might get injured in which case we'd definitely need the reserve to step in.Can't see a Test where 2 spinners will be needed so Crane would be going for the experience.
Rayner should have been picked over Ansari last winter.
I'd be surprised if Hameed isn't at 3 for the first test.
Root 4.
Can't see 5 seamers all playing.
It's a shame the squad isn't being debated due to so many in form options more who do we think/trust to do a job!
55-5, what a shambles. Need 113 more to make them bat again and they declared in their first innings!
Groundhog Day.
25-4 wasn't it
They'll fold for under 150
Barker & Patel will have a quick dart and the rest will fall away without much fight like those before them.
Farcical.
Barker was out for 0 but Patel hit 19. 50% right. This has been coming since last season really. All out of 112 in second innings. Too many people are in the last throes of their careers at the same time and the younger players have struggled to get much experience over the last few years. Whoever thought it a good Idea to let Chopra go needs sacking too.
Can't help but feel a lot of this revolves around Ashley Giles. He seems a very astute Director of Cricket and the rot appeared to set in when he left for Lancashire and maybe much of the vision and strategy left with him.Barker was out for 0 but Patel hit 19. 50% right. I'm glad that he has come back, albeit too late really for this season and key decisions that maybe should have been taken a couple of years ago have only been taken this summer.
The prospects look good, particularly in the 4 day game but at the painful cost of almost inevitable relegation.
Yep agree. I didn't know of the family connection with Bell and Troughton which is bound to lead to conflict somewhere down the line.Giles is a great addition! Massive loss the first time. My concern is with Troughton, good guy, good player and servant but to go from playing to head coaching that same set of players is a big ask! Must have been awkward the Bell situation this summer as he's Bell's brother in law.
I like Giles in his role but I'd like an outsider as head coach but maybe having a younger coach that Giles knows allows Giles to have more input I don't know.
Next season will be the real test as they simply have to get promoted back up.
Bears relegation finally confirmed. 1 point in it between Yorkshire, Somerset & Middlesex with 2 to play to see who joins us in div 2 next season.
Worcestershire promoted today good young home produced squad!
England should win the one dayer today surely?
Need less than 5 an over, after West Indies posted 204.
Not the first time this season that one player alone has made the score respectable. Well maybe not respectable but better than the laughable total with his knock.Guess who were 49-6 today!?
Some knock by Jeets to get a slightly respectable score!

it was a howler but to be fair he made up for it with a cracking catchIf we hadn't dropped Gayle on nought, it would have been even more emphatic.
Such a pointless series in a Cricket sense!
Be more benefit in having another Test but money talks.
They didn't look very happy at the T20. It is a stupid idea. Even if you get away with no rain having all these day night matches when its going to be freezing is bonkers. This is a good time to play the touring teamsters they are not coping well with the colder weather

Wasn't there something a few years back where counties had to bid and pay the ECB to stage internationals. Wonder if this is anything similar given that they're playing at places like Durham, Bristol and Southampton.
Shouldn't be playing at all IMO. International cricket in general needs scaling back. There's so much of it nobody views it as an event anymore. They seem to spread them around but they should avoid the north at this time of the year.
