On another note I also remember an old lady behind me who used to frequently shout c*on and w*g at Uriah Rennie whenever we had him refereeing our games. She then moved on to shout it at Stern John too and that used to make me cringe.

She got away with it for years till eventually someone complained and she got a written warning from the club, warning that someone had put in a formal complaint about her language (no reference to racism) and she should stop.

I think the punishment would be far greater now and I dare say in a few years time homophobia will be punished a lot more harshly like racism now is.

That attide is part of the problem. We shouldn't accept that sort of behavior, we should challenge it. 40 years ago it was ok to throw bananas at John Barnes, Cyrile Regis and Viv Anderson, that only changed because some people challenged it. Your response reminds me of every time i complain of swearing at football and am told i should accept it as it is 'part of the game'. No, i shouldn't have to and it says so in the FA/FL/ground rules which we agree to observe as conditions on entering any league ground.

I reckon that the powers that be have tied themselves up in knots. Especially when the 'establishment' has deliberated & decreed that calling someone a 'Jock' or 'Nazi' nor even 'Ginge' is not offensive, but things like 'Taffy', 'fatty' or 'homo' is. How the fck are we the Joe Public supposed to decide on the spur of the moment???

Just perhaps another example of how far removed from the real world "they" have become?!

Because I was only 7 years old? I didn't even understand what most of those words meant at that age. I just got told by my Grandad not to use them.

I'm not at all! 15 years ago it would have been sung more by more supporters and at various points throughout the game. I was pointing out that it was a small minority and it was over pretty quickly followed by an awkward silence.

Remember being at Preston maybe 7/8 years ago and a couple of builders were sat in their half built stand to the left - they got "gayboy" abuse all game and no-one batted an eyelid. Not saying it's right, but just shows how much the game has moved on when a 15-second chant from a minority is now topic for debate.

Personally, I think we're entering dangerous territory if everyone starts throwing a wobbly and taking offence about chants such as this - does this mean we cannot now mock stereotypes for any players/supporters? No more "fat bastard" chants? Cannot call the Welsh "sheep shaggers"? Leicester fans "inbreds"? I could go on. People need to lighten up.

In a better world we'd be abusing other fans as being homophobes rather than brushing off homophobia in our own fan base. Professional footballs are having to hide their true identity because of the fear of abuse and this sort of thing is the reason why. It's a dark age mindset.
