Why not do both?

Don't ask me, ask Robins.

He would probably put Ponticelli on buy decide to play long ball to him with his back to goal judging by his recent decisions.

I get that if we don't create the chances nobody can score but at some point surely he gets a go. As Adams said why is he on the bench if he's not ready to play.

I'd play him with Biamou up front, said on Saturday at about 55 minutes to bring them both on.

Yep, totally agree.

I thought Shipley for Jones was an odd one. I would have brought Vincenti on. When Beavon went off I would then have brought Biamou on and then introduced Ponticelli after.

Time to fire up the Luton match thread as there seems to be much to discuss....

For me at this minute it's 0-0 and a ball drop 15 yards out to anyone of our players to have a pop it'd be Ponticelli, madness he's not getting more game time.

I like the kid but let's be honest when he came on against FGR he had a chance with a header almost immediately that he put straight at their keeper. Not blaming him in the slightest but we all know that had it been McNulty or Biamou they'd have got dogs abuse

Again it's one chance. It wasn't straight at the keeper either it was to the side.

We can't expect him to come in and have a strike rate of 100% with every chance scored. We need to create him 3 or 4 and hope he gets 2.

The thing for me with any of our kids is that even if he's just as good/bad or even slightly worse than the likes of McNulty or Biamou: he's ours and likely to still be here after the end of the season. So any game time is a continuation of the investment we've already made into him.

He's going to need a run of games to get used to men's football anyway, as far as I'm concerned it's not like there's anyone who can complain if they lose their spot.

The people running around claiming people are bigging him up as some messiah are being silly. Most just think it's worth giving a promising kid some game time while no one else is showing any promise.

Didn't he force a save from the keeper and the header was from the edge of the area? Or am I thinking of a different chance

He needs a game as let’s face it we cannot go on like this. My only issue is the sky blue faithful/CET Facebook idiots putting him on this pedestal. Everyone prays that he does become that good but the blinkers were on for sheffers, Maddison, Thomas etc.

He needs game time no doubt but I think we need to keep the kid grounded and our expectations realistic

I've no doubt that he needs game time, and bringing him on for the last 5 minutes makes no sense. He may not be ready to start a game, but needs at least 20 or 30 minutes. As for Robins' assertion that he is 'not ready yet', if he's not ready yet, he shouldn't be on the bench.

No, that was the one.

It's what I have been getting at where people seem to see different things.

I thought it was a good effort considering he was running away from goal and the angle of the cross.
It was, it was no way one that should be scored every time. As usual though that gets ignored.

It's no surprise there seems to be pressure on strikers where a player gets one chance like that in a game and it's expected he scores it. If he doesn't it was straight at the keeper and he's rubbish.

Keep giving the strikers chances every have, give him a few and see what he does then. Rather than he had one half chance in a game to be judged on.

He made plenty of good runs during that game as well.

I don't think anyone expects him to score every chance but we've gone over 8 hours without a goal and he's been on the pitch for how long of that time 20 minutes?

I don't get what the 'risk/gamble' is on giving a lad full of confidence a go.

I don't think there is much, but we need to play to his strengths.

If we played as we did last 30 on Sat it would have made no difference, same as fgr

Ruining his confidence before he begins his career, and ruining his career before it begins?

Let's face it, few of us actually know where he is in the pecking order, his temperament (a model professional, or a Thornton) or how ready he actually is.

If he's ready and hits the ground running then great, but atm he's doing everything to force his way in and, as you say, is scoring goals at a reserve level. I'd rather he came into the side when the time was right for *him*. If that's next game, fine, but if that's three months' time then fine, too.

He needs to start but I think MR is very stubborn and would rather play defence football .If we get a point at Luton then it's ok but at home we should be all out attack imo.But I think Luton will put a few past us .

Agreed I think if we went all out attack against Luton we would get destroyed

I thought that he brought on Shipley to cover if Haynes broke down and it still gave him two changes but then again he never bothers using all three

Not very reassuring that assumption, to bring someone on just in case another player breaks down.

Hope that wasn't the case, cos if so that would be very poor management.

Perhaps Robins is going by experience and maybe his thinking is if he hadnt made his Utd debut at 18 he may have gone on to have a better career himself and he was somehow hampered, remember he was a prospect at a high end club we have a prospect at a low end league club maybe Robins thinks he is duty bound to protect Ponticelli, these types of decisions makes and breaks players careers, he still needs one way or another to get our goal shy senior strikers scoring goals thats called managing and I am sure when he has exhausted every avenue for them he will then have to change it, theres no point i suppose in his mind destroying the already low confidence in the senior strikers i guess but its getting close i would imagine in saying enough is enough the Ponticelli will get his chance

MR is digging his heels in on this one and we are probably making matters worse on the radio I heard MR say " if I start reacting to what everyone says I might as well not be managing it's my decision and I will play him when I think the time is right"

Yeah because them two wouldn’t have got it on target.

And it wasn’t straight at the keeper at all, it was down to the keepers right and a decent header.
