My train of thought is of a individual who'd not accept 12 weeks work (short term deal), I'd be seeking a 18 month deal if I was as good as what the side thought I'd be.

The type of contract your offering is for a man returning from injury with his fitness to prove.

Or of that more suited to a man not interested in the long term of our club just a fast pay day.

That's my point... what area of the market your trying to find a player given the deal your offering.

I think if 35 year-old Richards were to sign for us, surely it'd make sense to sign him on a contract until the end of the season with a 1 year extension clause in our favour rather than committing to a whole 18 months? We don't have the capital to be making such a hasty risk.

He knows where the goal is and is a bully up top. He's never been blessed with pace so none to lose.

He's played a minimum of 30 league games alone in recent seasons so injuries are no issue.

A tweak in style of play and him and McNulty will thrive together with Richards scoring too.

Or like Steve says, at 35, if you're offered a 'til the end of the season deal with the option of another 12 months by agreement' or a straight up 18 month deal at Swindon, then you're going to take the latter if the salary is comparable. If Swindon go up, they could be stuck with a 36 year old in L1 who Northampton didn't want for a L1 relegation battle, with a 12 month contract to see out.
