Away form (3 Viewers)

IMG_2037.PNG Our away form just isn't acceptable to sustain automatic promotion. We need to improve at least to a level to get us into the play-offs or something dramatic happens to get us into the autos.

If this isn't addressed asap then February could potentially be a a turning point for the wrong reasons in our season.

Beating Acrrington at our only home game in Aden of course is a must. Let them win and they are moving away from us.

There will be more twists and turns I'm sure. But just think Feb is a pivotal month for our season now.

Accrington game is massive.

They have a game in hand on us and are currently 2 points clear. They win that game in hand this Tuesday and they would be 5 points clear coming into our match up at the Ricoh on Saturday.

If they were to beat us it would then be them clear of us by 8 points, that's why we must get a positive result against them.

8 point gap would be massive.

The irony is that for years people have said, quite rightly, that we need to turn the Ricoh into a fortress. But one area only appears 'strong' in comparison to an area of relative weakness i.e. our away form.

Mansfield, Accrington and Wycombe games all massive!

That’s if we serious contenders-we need something from all those games.

2 wins and a draw
Please!

I know we are league two
I know we don’t own a ground
I know our owners don’t care
I know we have lost thousands of fans

Don’t think I will ever get my head around seeing or hearing sentences like the below.
Bigger though surely. Bigger than Forest Green away. Bigger than Cambridge at home, Carlisle away etc.

I see nothing wrong in that statement. Some games are bigger than others and playing a team above you and a rival IS massive. An 8 point gap would be very tough to haul back.

It might appear a cliche, but this game is huge and for more than one reason. Clearly.

Those stats are damning. Wycombe, Mansfield and Accrington all in the top 6 form table both home and away.

Our away form will kill us unless we turn it around.

Big month and no easy games...

Beat Accrington and a point at Colchester will be acceptable. Mansfield is a local derby and will be another sold out Away end and a vociferous atmosphere no doubt so that is gonna be a tough one for sure....but we have to beat either them or Wycombe?

I would say we do. Certainly can't afford to lose both. Two draws would be okay if we can win the games around those fixtures.

Imho, we started the season intending to win our home games and draw our away. 2 points per game average and we go up in the autos. We're now at the point where we need to win away to make up for lost ground, but the mindset hasn't changed. That sits with the manager. I'm a fan of Robins, but this is the time where he has to earn his wage.

And seemingly try and do something different away from home.

We simply cannot accept Forest Green being first to the ball all the time and he as manager cannot accept that either. Whether you are at the bottom desperately looking to avoid relegation or at the top desperately trying to get promotion the desire should be the same.

No way Forest Green should have been showing more desire to get to the ball first.

I agree its a huge game. What I mean is that I never thought I would in my life time hear us say that the Accrington game is huge off the back of losing for the 2nd time this season to Forest Green

Accrington’s game in hand vs Swindon this week.

So either way it’s a win win. A Draw would be ideal. Meaning We would actually have a game in hand on Swindon.

Yeah, but it's also huge because of the big crowd expected. Turn it on and win and we may have won over many new young fans.

I have a feeling that the Notts County away game could also be pivotal. There will be a huge following that day, I just hope the players turn up for that one. I’d seriously take the playoffs all day long as we have now it seems, serious injuries to our defence which has been our strength this season. Haynes coming in for Stokes will be a major weakness-I just hope we are able to limp over the line into one of the top 7 places.

I have this horrible nightmare scenario spinning round my head whereby we make the playoffs, but then Burge (or LOB) makes a howler and lose and they're hounded out the club.

In any league there is never an easy game. You just have to keep faith in your team spirit, game plans and set pieces, your goals.

Well said.

Some on here have faith one week , none the next, faith some months none the next. They jump from one bandwagon to another. two extremes after one loss or a win.

I am certainly not like that, but can fully understand why some are. We keep winning our home games and keep losing away games.

That is the definition of from one extreme to another.

It is most baffling how we can beat all the teams at the top and then lose to teams at the bottom.

I know someone posted that it's better to not lose against the top sides, as then we are not letting them gain points on us, but the bigger picture is that if we can beat all those sides at the top there is no excuse at all for losing to sides at the other end of the table.

Still galling me that Robins has admitted that Forest Green were first to every ball on Saturday. Why? Why were they first to every ball?

Is their desire to avoid relegation any stronger than our desire for promotion?

We seriously need to address this. As the season wears on the teams at the bottom are going to fight harder and harder and battle more and more. We have to compete with that and show the exact same level of desire as them and our away form has to improve.

We may still only be 4 points from the automatic positions, but ...

1. We have lost substantially more games than the top 4 teams (6, 7, 6, 5 to our 10)

2. Our away form isn't good enough.

3. Every time we get really close to the top 3 we then fail and fall back down the table again

4. We haven't had an unbeaten run past 4 games. Mansfield at the moment are on a run of just 1 defeat in 16.

If we are happy just being the playoffs we probably will just make it okay, but if we have designs on the top 3, which we surely should have, there needs to be a substantial improvement.

For me it should be top 3, that has to be our aim. I am not at all confident about winning through the play-offs.

For me, every time we win at home I am obviously cheered and think we should be able to kick on from there (especially when the next game is against a team right down at the bottom).

I don't automatically believe we are going to be top 3 after a win and by the same token I don't think we won't make the playoffs after a loss.

Every time we lose to the likes of Forest Green however, I think it is right to question how we are set up tactically in away games and our application going into those matches.

It's great if we get a reaction at home again to Accrington, but then of course it would be absolutely correct to question it all if we then followed it up 3 days later against Colchester away and the application was all wrong again and we lost to a team that wanted it more than us.

I keep saying, we need an unbeaten run. At the moment we are very inconsistent and that surely cannot fill anyone with any degree of faith that we are destined to make the top 7.

There's faith and then there's blind faith. People are so down about this result because we've gone back to something that was so clearly failing us earlier in the season - it wasn't just one loss but a deliberate regression to tactics that we'd regularly slipped up with against similar placed teams this season . It suggests Robins still hasn't learned what some people were able to see after the Newport game in August.
I thought we'd turned a corner, albeit through the fortune of Kelly's injury giving Bayliss a chance. With Bayliss in CM we've had a 75% win record in the league and McNulty has hit a real purple patch with 8 in 8 games and even then we were still struggling away. But to change back to an even more defensive set up against a team in the position of FGR was mind boggling and smacked of just shoehorning the best fit XI into a team instead of picking a team with a strategy to win the game. How many times this season have you watched us lose in the league and thought 'Yep, we lost to a team of better players today'? Accrington and Mansfield for me. All the others I've felt we never set up to give us the chance to win - at least half of our defeats have finished with 2 DMs still on the pitch.
People have been sticking their heads in the sand all season - at the beginning it was 'Look at how good our defence is' or 'The strikers are just not good enough' or 'But we beat Luton 0-3' or 'we've been unlucky with injuries' and now it seems to be 'but we're only X points off the autos'. This squad is good enough for the autos but we keep shooting ourselves in the foot tactically and losing any momentum. We may limp into the playoffs still but even that will be something that no team in the last 3 seasons has done with a just a 3 win/4 match unbeaten streak.

I am a very optimistic person in life and also when it comes to the City, but I am also a realist too and it's abundantly clear our form has to improve and we have to move away from the Doyle/Kelly combination to boot.
