If you don't feel comfortable, why would you consider going in the first place?
Errm, haven't you been following the thread?

I was planning to go with my daughter. That was the plan. She has then changed the plan.

It now means me going on my own and I am only uncomfortable going on my own, same as I was uncomfortable on my own on the coach down to Wembley for the play off final.

Laughing gas is Nitrous Oxide.
Indeed, know that, but what wingy was referring to as "capsules" I believe is a silver like bottle/capsule that contains a gas, which I'm not sure what is in it?

Must be my age/generation but this event creeps me out. Saw a couple of young blokes recently walking hand in hand, and it shocked me. But should I be ? Maybe I should move with the times and accept it is "normal " and not be so prudish. If my dad was alive and saw two blokes holding hands he'd go " look at them bleeding puffs ! "

Can’t blame age/generation. My wife’s uncle is gay and he’s older than you. It’s similar with racism and the older generation. My nan managed to not be racist when she married my grandad in the 50s even when all of her family disowned her.

People are either accepting of it or not, and I don’t even like the term ‘accepting’ or ‘tolerant’. People just are what they are and I don’t care either way. Plus gay events are a right laugh.
I went round Soho with my cousin and his boyfriend the night before Wembley last year and it was a proper laugh. Bit of an eye opener but still a laugh.

Fair comments. But some things get ingrained in your mindset from your upbringing, and they can be hard to budge. But as I've written on here before I'm a firm believer in you can change by thinking differently as I've proven in my life. But as I've got older I like to think I'm easy going and people can be whoever they like, albeit sexually, spiritually, and politically.

It's laughing gas isn't it? They put it into a balloon and then inhale it and call it Hippy Crack.

I was looking at some porn pics last night and I'm sure I saw a hippy crack at some point.

I'm sorry, but I just don't get the concept of bragging that you are gay, because basically, that's what it is.
I'm straight as a die but was called a "homophobic gay hater" when I asked on a Facebook group (quite innocently) why there isn't a Straight Pride? I'm proud of all my 7 kids, 17 grandkids and my great-grandson. Why can't I parade for that? Because I would be labeled something by the tree-huggers. Believe me, I have nothing against gays. I just don't want the concept waved in my face. Keep your sexual preferences private.
We have the UK Pride thing here on the island in July sometime. I won't be attending. I have to wash my hair that day.

I think the thing is, Houch, they were supressed for so long and had to hide in plain sight and were even jailed just for being what they are.

Fully understandable that they now want to celebrate their acceptance in society and want to express themselves.

I don't see any problem with it at all.

It's miles away from bragging about being gay. It's celebrating the fact that they now can without persecution which is still a very recent thing, and most importantly inviting absolutely anyone else who wants to celebrate along too.

Yeah, totally agree.

Anyway Otis. Just go on your own.
Ha!!

We are sorted. Missus is working, so unless you tell her she will have no idea it is even taking place.

Going with my daughter for the first hour and then she is going to meet up with her friends there.

If my missus knew I was going she would say that I AM gay.

I'm sure it will all be fine if they can manage to keep it non political, but these events often appear to promote an anti establishment agenda.

I know all that Otis, but being "gay" was legalised in 1967 - 50 years ago! So called "pride" marches have been going on since the early 1980's. I think by now everyone understands their "plight" and "persecution". Like I said earlier, why do people have to openly display what they like to do sexually? THAT'S what I'm getting at.

It may well have been legalised, but was still not accepted for aalong, long time after and very much frowned upon and people would be regularly be beaten up just for being gay.

It's only become accepted decades after it was legalised. Why do you think so many movie and TV stars and sports people hid the fact that they were gay for so long?

Okay, Otis. So why don't you want to attend the pride thing on your own? If you're so accepting of it, then it shouldn't be a problem for you. Just go. You never know your luck! :emoji_kissing_heart:

But I was the same in not wanting to go to Wembley on my own, or other festivals, or to see bands in concert etc.

Whatever impression you seem to have built of them really isn't what they're about. It's an inclusive celebration, not a big showing off with live action rimjobs. Until the persecution that very much continues stops, things like this are a great positive. Much like there being CCFC supporters group along the same lines, it's not about accentuating differences but welcoming them.

Yeah and I love the fact that this one is focusing on making it family friendly.

They have to be inclusive, not exclusive.

If it's family and inclusive though why not just a huge celebration/carnival rather than pride and more inkeeping with a smaller version of a Notting Hill type event celebrating different cultures, religions, sexuality, the city itself and just about anything else. That would be more inclusive and show as the great pioneering city that Cov has always been.

Amyl Nitrate, as it's proper name.
Supposedly a muscle relaxant for smooth muscles, such as throat and anus if inhaled and you get a rush/high from it.
And it can kill you!

Looking forward to the Should I go to MotoFest by myself thread ;)

If it were at all humanly possible I would have less than zero interest.
OK then, why not a 'Should I go to kenilworth Castle by myself?' thread?

This thread ultimately seems utterly meaningless. That's not to denigrate feeling uncomfortable going places. I, for example, can go to castles by myself but, strangely, can't do the cinema by myself.

However, it ultimnately boils down to:

Do I want to go?

IF wanting to go > feelings of discomfort THEN Go

IF wanting to go < feelings of discomfort THEN Don't go.

What the event is, is pretty irrelevant to that.

It is relevant though I would say. I would totally disagree with what you have said there.

Example. I was absolutely fine and comfortable sitting by myself at Wembley, but wasn't at all comfortable going down to Wembley alone on the coach.

It depends on what the scenario is and with a gay festival, because I don't know what to expect I don't know how comfortable I would feel.

I could decide to go on holiday by myself and wouldn't know how comfortable I would be until I got there.

If I went to the pride thing and didn't feel comfortable that would kind of spoil my day and I would be sad.

Sometimes you encounter reinforcement that you are alone and that can be saddening.

I am a very social person, but circumstance has now made me a non social person in many ways.

I don't think I could go the cinema alone, which is ridiculous as it's really an anti-social activity at heart, sat silent in the dark staring at a screen.

I am lost now :(

You were only going to go because your daughter wanted to, now she is going with friends? Let her go and stay at home and put your feet up.

Yeah. It's just that I do like events (Godiva, food festivals, free concerts etc, entertainment). The Pride festival apparently has entertainment and music, so it sounds interesting.

I think you just need to come 'out' Otis and you'll feel a lot better. This forum seems a good place to do it :)
