If he's a right winger that's a strange one, Id assume we need someone on the left. And now I can't work out how to get him, Andreu and Bayliss into the same side.

Ah well, hope he's good, good luck to the lad.

I’d assumed he was left sided but hey

Last season before Jodi Jones got injured, he played on the left and would cut in onto his right foot.

So you could have Jones on the left and Thomas on the right , with Andreu or Bayliss playing behind the the striker.

Got to be goals in that forward line surely.

Just looked at that video and I may be imagining things but he seems like a left footed right winger. Which doesn't seem right. Maybe he does play on the left.

We definitely need a natural winger. The only other natural winger I can think of is Jones. Shipley and Bayliss can play wide but it’s not the same thing.
Football is simple really. In an attacking sense, creativity, good service and a striker
who can finish. We are struggling in all those departments. It’s only 3 games though...give it time

Are we actually struggling with creativity? I’d have thought we had ‘too many’ creative players. Isn’t that part of the problem? How do we harness the creative players’ abilities without leaving the midfield wide open...

You start by playing people in their natural positions. I don’t think MR has found his best 11 or his best formation yet but he will get there. I can’t stand it when players are played out of position.

Bit like when you used to get played on the pitch rather than the bench.

Jones played on the right and cut inside onto his left.

I think, I'm doubting myself now.

A friend who is a Derby fan reckons Luke Thomas is coming in on loan from them. Apparently he played in the friendly at nuneaton but i cant remember him. Not sure how much truth is in this so dont hold me to it.
You nailed it mate

I feel like it will be one of those situations where we stumble upon the best system after an injury or something.

I haven’t read all of the thread so I don’t know if this has already been mentioned but this seems to me like we’ll be going back to 4-4-2 with Bayliss on the right and Thomas on the left.

Jones definitely plays on the right and cuts in on his left. He may occasionally switch sides very briefly during games but is very left footed and bases his game from the right hand side.
That was probably true in the early part of his time with us but if you look at last season when he had established himself as a regular starter before his injury he and Vincenti regularly switched in every game
He set up loads of chances on both left and right by getting to the bye line and firing the ball back across goal for our forwards to get on the end of

Derby fans seem positive about him, generally a good sign.

On the whole I think you can get a decent idea of a player from fan's opinions but you also have to consider how many of the fans have actually watched this kid play - he's only got 2 first team appearances. Are a lot of these opinions based on what they've actually seen or anecdotal based on rumours? I know we've got some very highly rated youngsters in our youth set-up but until the U23 game in the week I'd not seem any of them play ever. How many of us would we be able to provide a decent idea of the likes of Hickman, Ford etc to other teams if they went on loan or would we just be regurgitating what we've heard about them?

Many Chelsea fans were raving about Sterling, but he's only got 2 sub appearances totalling 15 minutes as well - both cup games which Chelsea were much the better team . How many of those opinions are actually based on what they've actually witnessed rather than what they've heard? We got excited based on that but so far we've seen nothing to suggest he's anywhere near as good as they're making him out to be. I watched him in the England U19 over the summer and he was very underwhelming and almost anonymous at times.

I am not sure if Jones was playing (I think he was) but I am sure there was one game where we had Lameiras, G Thomas and Jones in the Checkatrade and they constantly just swapped whenever they wanted. Caused havoc.

This is the pre-season game with Notts

Good to see for his first he leaves their left back in no mans land!

The biggest factor with very young players in the men's game is inconsistency
They can be outstanding in one match then anonymous or full of mistakes in the next
In previous years young players would often be introduced in the last quarter of the season when most teams were out of contention for promotion places or safe from relegation
But since the introduction of the play offs (which we all agree are a good thing on balance) the majority of teams are either in with a chance of a play off place or too close to the relegation spots to take too many chances with their kids
I think both Sterling and Luke Thomas may well end up as top players but they have to be handled carefully especially in the early games in senior football where the result really matters

Looked very sharp in that video especially up again to Dan Jones who I thought was impressive against us.

We have Jodie Jones still recovering from major injury, looks like September/October at the earliest before he’s anywhere near ready, Dexter Walters hopefully one for the future but probably nowhere near ready yet, Sterling not impressed enough for me very much a rookie so signing an out and out winger until January is a smart move gives time and indicates to me a different style of play, possibly something more like a 4-3-3.

Will be interesting to see where Bayliss and Andrue together fit in and who gives us the width on the left and what pairing he goes with up top, for me it has to be a pairing. Over the opening two league games Andreu starred in one, not brilliant but okay in the second, Bayliss good in flashes but clearly won’t get the best from him out wide but are both together tough enough ?
At the end of last season we clearly looked a unit how the team was set up then, with a fit Kelly playing a more positive role ahead of Doyle.
We have a number of new players clearly signed with the future in mind Westbrooke not sure the type of midfielder he is, Alasinni , looks a bit of a gamble with his injury record, Bosma out on loan, Dexter Walters, might end up the same until January, add to them Shipley, who I rate, and Bayliss for that matter, still kids though in a tougher division and clearly there’s no idea on the front two and in my opinion it has to be two, I’d be surprised if all five are still here come September.

I've been wondering how to best utilise Andreu and Bayliss and wonder if we could get away with two 'No. 10's' behind Biamou in a Xmas tree? That is of course until Jones comes back.
