McNulty. (3 Viewers)

What did some of our fans call him early last season? Mcwanky or something similar?

I can actually see him going to somewhere like Rangers if Reading doesn’t work out but it’s way too early to judge already

Certainly won't be Rangers his family are all big Celtic fans

so if somebody offered to treble your wage - but you were then the tea boy - would you not take it ?

You have to look at your career as an investment. Sure, you can take the quickest quid you’ve ever earned at 18 and be out of the Football League by 25, then you’re back to being a semi-pro.

Sometimes, you’ll earn more money as a footballer proving yourself elsewhere on less money. To use McNulty as an example, a few posters seem to indicate he didn’t want to move to a L2 club before he joined us. Assume that’s true, it’s proved to have been a good career move to move a league down because he earned himself a move to the Championship by setting L2 alight. Had he stayed in L1, he’d probably still be in L1 possibly as a bit-part player like he was before he joined us.

To use your analogy, it’s like giving up a promising career with clear progression to higher wage brackets, but leaving that job for a temporary, short term job, but on a lot of money for that short period.

Would love to have him back next season if it doesn't work out for him at reading

Depends how much professional pride he has really, doesn't it? If he doesn't care about playing again and raking in the dough is his only priority, fair play to him, although that is one of the things that is wrong with the modern game-too much money and players with £ signs in their eyes. Personally, I always admire players who take a pay cut as "they want to be playing football" rather than sitting on their arse being paid loads to not play.

Football is so removed from the real world. If I was told I’d get a pay rise to go and work at another company but just make tea and toast for the boss I’d tell them to sod off. Football is a crazy world though and agents pull the strings.

I’ve come across footballers even in the relative infancy of the premier league who would sign stupid things. One I met was paying 5 grand a year car insurance in 2000. I said he can pay a fifth of that and he shrugged and laughed “my agent” - go figure.

It’s also why this “selling on the cheap”
Mantra is utter shite. As soon as an agent wants a deal if it’s a big leap up it’s happening and it becomes damage limitation for the club.

Also the power that players have, can't just get rid if they are shite
That's what annoys me. You give someone a job, if they aren't up to the job you're stuck with them for years. If they're even vaguely up to standard they bugger off.

You don't get that in any other job. If I don't do my job I get fired, if I do my job if I'm really lucky I might get a small pay rise.

If you do it well, chances are your company doesn't get over a £million in compensation if you give three months' notice to go elsewhere, either...

Isn't it something like 60% of footballers go bankrupt within 2 years of retirement though. More after that too. Most of them end up with nothing but some of them don't even get to have played the game.
I think you are confusing that with 60% of statistics are made up.

Really? Just consider what you are claiming.

Heart and head... its a no brainer when you gotta put food on the table for your wife and family.

As a footballer there is only 1 club that you owe any loyalty to - that is the club that developed you as part of their academy. If that also happens to be your hometown club then all the more power. Other than that - no point in having loyalty as your career can be over in a heartbeat with a bad injury - you move on for the best package you can, whenever you can. The same is even true at the top table...

But the ones that do take the pay cut are invariably the ones who are already set up for life.

Fans will always be too emotional about favourite players leaving and all that. Players in modern day football really don't have that same emotion back to a club or fans. They are in it for themselves and they would be as it's a job. Gone are the days of a loyal servant to the club after 5 years or more service. Agents drive the football world. There's money in them hills and that's what they do for their client and themselves.

Slowly football fans are learning this and becoming less attached to their one hit wonder star for a season.

You could look at it this way. If McNulty stays and gets 1 goal in a league he’s been sketchy in before. No Championship side is going to touch him.

We release him and he’s stuck in the lower leagues. McNulty left when his stock was high. He’s got a 4 year deal on I’d guess 10k a week.

Makes so much financial sense to leave guarenteed 2 million over the next 4 years

It's not just financial sense. Maybe he's actually got some ambition and wants to test himself at a higher level.

I still think that selling him was the best move, just don’t think he would have been the same player and probably wouldn’t have got the deal we did so suited us and the player. We didn’t fully replace which was our downfall (not for the want of trying). The money they paid it’s worth a risk in that league, he works then it’s the buy of the year, it doesn’t and they could probably recoup half of the money

People saying that he shouldn't have made the move... this isn't a player moving from 100k a week to 150k a week he's probably moving from 120k / year to maybe 5 times the amount.

This isn't a loyalty question it's a significant quality of life question, I think we forget that whilst we'd give anything to be playing for the club we love, this is a career for them and as a footballer you have a limited career span, there's absolutely no question as to whether he made the right decision or not..

Some Reading fans were saying he was the best player on the pitch first half on Twitter

Look, he couldn’t turn down the opportunity in case he never got it again. He’d literally take the “what if” To his grave, as it could be his only opportunity to play at that level.

He believes in his own ability & every player wants to test themselves at the highest level possible & he believes he can make it.

He also gave interviews where he was saying how frustrating it was that because of the level he was playing at that he would always be overlooked by his Country. He believes he can make an international career.

Given all that plus the higher wages, what would you have done? Not took it & maybe regretted it forever?

Just thought I’d raise the money issue here. We received between 1.2 million - 1.5 for McNulty.

Barnsley just sold a proven striker at this level and one who scored 12 goals in the championship for a million to Millwall

Speaking to a mate recently who has a son who’s a second year scholar at another club. Insurance quote for a Corsa was £5000 for his first year because he plays football. Has to be done with the PFA involved as well apparently.

What wage was he on with us and what is he on now?

I suppose all those who have a go at him for leaving wouldn't take a job elsewhere for a massive pay rise.

There is no loyalty in football anymore. Either from clubs or players unless it is about what they can get out of a deal or new contract. Why should our players be any different?

probably on 1200 - 1500 a week here and I'd guess 3-4000 at Reading, Life changing money,
And absolutely nothing to say he won't make it at Reading anyway. We're only 4 games in, Usual knee jerk bollocks from people when really they should have learnt by now to give players a bit more time.

I think he'll be fine at Championship level, a very decent all round player.

You imagine he'll be on more than that if Norwich were paying Madison £7k PW.

More like £10k a week at Reading plus a six figure signing on fee
