Should you be able to have a beer when watching the game at The Ricoh? (22 Viewers)

anybody who is binge drinking to enjoy a game of any sport is going to lose this argument.

what on earth are you on about?
And I've highlighted why this would negate the need for people to throw drink down their neck.
I have to be honest, I probably wouldn't bother myself, if I'm drinking on a match day I like to have a break during the game but if people want that option then they should be able to, if they can't behave then it's easy enough to stop it again.
And do you think people don't binge drink during rugby and cricket?

I have seen first hand over many years the results of bad behavior at football in part caused by over indulging in the drink. It is my opinion that we are in a better place by banning alcohol from the arena.
Yes other sports have issues but let's not kid ourselves Wasps and Leicester fans don't have a go at each other despite having access to alcohol, it's a football fan issue which has had the lid kept on it and in my opinion, which I am happy to share, the lid needs to kept on.

I have no issue with people drinking. So many would just get on with it and have a beer while watching football.

It is the twats who would ruin it for everybody else. I haven't got an issue with it happening, I just can't see it unless it is strictly policed.

Seeing bottles fly over my head at MK Dons away is a good example of one of the reasons it won't work, that was city fans throwing them into our own fans as well. People being unable to hold onto drinks after a goal while their mates film them so they can say "scenes" or "limbs" is another reason.

The general bellends where as the normal bloke with his mates just stood watching a game with a beer has to miss out because of them

I totally disagree and thankfully you're in a minority. Most people just like a drink at the game and are quite capable of doing so with out acting the like a prick.

So you think I am in a minority? You are asking for the same courtesy as fans of other sports and I believe there should be no reason you shouldn't if there wasn't such compelling evidence that idiots would abuse it.
I am not trying to be confrontational or come off as a party pooper, it's just that I have experienced enough of this shit over a long period to know that alcohol in grounds is a risk too far.
If they allowed alcohol in the ground I believe I would use hospitality on my visits to the U.K.

Isn't it obvious? Alcohol makes people louder and more inclined to sing and create a buzz.

Also, the type of scum that would cause trouble wouldn't pay £4-5 for a pint so I don't think we should worry too much about them.

I'd at least give it a trial run.

The "scum that would cause trouble" certainly would pay £4-5 a pint. It's bad enough being among some of the twats away from home, I don't want to be surrounded by them at home games too.

Some stayed at the bar for the whole game at Charlton couldn't have seen one minute of the game.

What is the point of going all the way there paying to get in then not watching the game.

I bet they were shocked when they realised it wasn't included in the ticket price?

my views haven't changed one bit, I have lived here for 5 years in a dry country and the best atmosphere ever experienced has been at games here, obviously no alcohol, no confrontation despite tribal lines between Al Nasr and Al Hilal.
No "is there a fire drill? No your town/city is shit,
Just getting behind their teams and loving the occasion. Now there is an idea!
I like a bit of an edge in a game but there is no need for that to escalate to something more.
I will go to 15 games this season, 5 already and it is very expensive for me but it is my passion, I have immense pride in my hometown and whether it is in the flesh or on ifollow i am forever Sky Blue.

yeah, it would soon just become a massive ball ache for everyone getting drenched in beer/piss. Ultimately you can go get yourself a pint at any time during the game, just not in your seat so its not like its a no-alcohol ban.

I'd like to point out to the 'If people can't go 45 minutes without a beer then tough' clan that it isn't about not being able to go 45 minutes without a beer, it would just be nice if I could enjoy, one or maybe two beers while watching my team play football. I can happily go weeks without a beer, and I also wouldn't want to get 'tanked up', but this 'People only want to drink beer at the football so they can get shit faced' notion is bollocks. Sometimes people just want to enjoy the sport they love with a relaxing drink. Shouldn't be anything wrong with that.
On the flip side, I do also agree with the others who have posted saying it would be carnage. Far too many neanderthals at the Ricoh (and I'm sure every other ground) to make it work, sadly.
I might well get shot down for this, but I wonder if it would be worth trialing at something like the Checkatrade Trophy games. May get a few more bums on seats, people aren't as likely to lose all ability to function as a human by throwing their beer in the air for no reason when we score because it doesn't matter quite so much, and also is a week night so most (not all) will have to go to work the following day so won't be quite as 'on it' as they would be for a Saturday game.

Sorry bro, I agree with most of your post, but I need to call bullshit on this point here.

Was it the world famous top-of-the-table clash between Al Nassr and Al-Hilal that you're referring to? Or the relegation dog fight between Ohod and Al-Ittihad?

Agree. I quite like it when we have pre season friendlies at Nuneaton as you can just stand there with a beer and watch a game close to the pitch and you feel way more involved. Usually they are in August so sometimes the nice weather adds to that.

I'm not too sure a cold beer at an empty ground playing FGR at home in the checkatrade would be that appealing, it would need to be something warm with a couple of shots in to keep you warm :)

The other thing would be drink driving. Obviously people can drink drive from football anyway if they wanted to but wonder how much it would go up. That's the main thing that would really stop me as I mostly need to drive after games.

As much as I hate the "Nanny State" concept in which we all now have to live. I do think there are times when a sledgehammer is necessary to crack a hazelnut. If you're out on a Saturday night enjoying several beers at a bar and some lairy twats decide it's time to be a jackass then you can avoid the nonsense and go to another bar if it doesn't stop.
However, when you are going to the Ricoh with friends and family wanting to enjoy the match day occasion the last thing you need is to be confronted with several pissed up lairy twats each of them having borrowed the family brain cell for the day. It's not like you can move seats or stadium to avoid them so if it is to happen it should be trialed with the ST holders first as they would have something to loose. The cost of stewarding and policing would have to be ramped up too to cope with the idiots but even then it will be the few that will frig it up for the rest.
The anti-social element that is increasing in our society seems to always show itself at football matches and alcohol will just fuel it. Having said all of the above a nice drop of Guinness watching the footy would be very enjoyable - ideally.

So what you're saying is beer only available in blocks 18 and upwards?

Like you say, as soon as people step into a football ground they seem to think "football" is an excuse to act like a dickhead. Through the summer people were getting excited over people throwing pints, claiming it was passion and just people having a laugh. Even above it's "soft" or a "wet weekend".

What happens if somebody in a nightclub decides they can't hold onto their beer and throw it all over other people? They would be kicked out straight away and very lucky if they didn't get a hiding for their troubles before the bouncers got to them.

The knock on effect would be increased ticket pricing to cover the stewarding and policing to look after the twats who couldn't handle their beer.

The other thing is the matchday experience, what happens when somebody who can't handle (or hold onto) their beer throws it and it goes all over a child or an OAP in the middle of December / January? All well and good saying "liven up" or "they are just having a laugh" like some would, what happens then when people end up being thrown down the stand?

The other thing is the media, during the summer they were all getting moist (literally) about beer throwing. BBC were saying how good it looked in bars where people were throwing their beers. People do actually think it's a thing.

some of the most pissed up lads ive ever seen are at Edgbaston cricket!

all good fun

No, I'm saying it won't work because of the people described who can't handle their beer or be trusted to be treated like a grown up.

Yep, exactly like the one fan, one seat thing. A few ruin it for the many.

We can have a no-alcohol stand for anyone who doesn't like it.

That's fair isn't it?

Or a stand for those that want to drink all game. That's fair, isn't it?

letting people drink during games is just asking for trouble

who cares if 100 people behave for every 1 thats a twat. thats still gonna be about 1000 twats per game ruining it for people near them.

I don't think anybody has really said they don't like it. It's the people who can't handle it or behave like normal humans that most seem to have an issue with.

I think it's really silly to say none of us can drink because a few spoil it.

There's always going to be a few fools but I'd say the general experience would be better for most if you could have a pint or two.

Trial it and enforce a zero tolerance policy on twattish behaviour. Make an example out of a few people if it comes to it and it'll probably work.

Sadly it isn't as simple as that.

In theory yes, just throw people out who throw beer / act up and ban them.

In reality.

Man A Throws beer / acts up
Stewards go over
Man A and friends all kick off and refuse to move
Police go over
Man A and friends all get kicked out
Man A goes to the telegraph looking for attention and blaming club for being heavy handed for throwing him out
Man A gets a petition from other fans and other fans and a hashtag #prayformana

If it can be done and the twattish behaviour stopped then it would be great! (Especially when it's nice weather)

It would never work. People kick off and whinge when they are asked to sit in their own seat and a thread will pop up on here talking about heavy handed stewards etc.
Actually, just try it and see.

"We do what we want, we do what we waaaaaaant.
I've had a shandy, we do what we want" etc
