Yeah but so is a fence and front gate?
Doesn't always mean people think they are better.
I'd want to live in one for the security side of it, I'd still have to go out to work every day the same as I do now and it would be no different really apart from safer.

A lot of people who choose gated communities are vulnerable people, single women and the elderly, people who feel safer having some security.
They can walk around the grounds at night without fear of being accosted.
It has nothing to with them feeling superior to others.
You don't have to be rich to live in a gated community here, they are everywhere.

How far does it go though? I have walls on my house and a padlock on my side gate.
I wouldn't want to be segregated from the outside world. It would just be a safety thing knowing that my daughter was out playing and was safe without twats driving about. It would probably be the same in a nice quiet culdesac without the gates and fences to be fair!

Weird quite applicable situation just happened. With a 3 day weekend coming up we went to the pub just now. On the way home there was a good 3 or 4 blokes stood on our street walking up and down, clearly up to no good. Shining lights into the windows and generally behaving shifty as hell.
Called 101 without wanting to be particularly dramatic. Apart from the 7 minutes it took me to get through, within 3 minutes following we had 3 cars and a van turn up.
Quite impressed really.
No updates so far but they did call me back to say they've had several other calls and these guys are clearly up to no good. They said they'll keep searching.
Took my dogs out for a bit of hunting but it looks like they've scattered now.

No it's not, it's just a place where often elderly people can feel a lot safer. It means scumbags can't directly threaten their doorsteps. They're frightened not arrogant.

My dad puts a wastepaper bin on the window ledge in the front room every night in case someone breaks in.

yeah, with their murder rate of nearly 34 people per 100,000 and ours of 1.22 we're catching them up!!

My dad wasn't too keen on it either but the estate was purchased by a Dutch-American billionaire so he has little say in the matter now. He did insist on a clause which prevents fences being erected between properties on the estate. The public road has also recently been closed to non-residents by the local council and there is a widely-believed conspiracy theory about who was behind that.
In the meantime there has been an explosion in crime in the city where he lives in recent weeks, very similar to that in Coventry.

Eindhoven. The local newspaper headlines are virtually a carbon copy of those in the Coventry Telegraph. "Four teenagers arrested after robbing supermarket at knifepoint", "Nineteen armed robberies in just four days", etc. This in a Dutch town that was virtually crime free until recently.

Yeah. At my dad's place all the houses are behind a single set of gates and when you pull up you have to explain who you are before the gates are opened by remote control. I think each resident has a button they can push to operate the gates? The post boxes are all lumped together outside the gates as well.

I'm not sure what the issue is with that? I wouldn't have an issue with living there.
It's not much different to a really quiet cul-de-sac anyway.

I got engaged there (I know it's weird, long story). Seemed relatively nice in fairness.
Then again I was there for a weekend and didn't leave the main centre.

No one can explain the sudden crime wave (in Eindhoven). Police numbers haven't been cut, there's no obvious racial element and the various incidents appear to be totally unrelated. For all I know the same thing is happening in towns everywhere.
Being murdered is rather extreme granted but there is quite an increase here now in car jackings, knife crime, car theft etc.......its not getting better that's for sure.

Seems like he thought they'd be invading in bare feet.
