The thread's aptly named though Duffy! Wishful thinking on my part perhaps, but I'm sure we're all tired of seeing the Thorn arguments all over the place. If we could keep it all confined to a single sticky, or God help us, a sub forum, to keep the rest of it Thorn-free, then I'd like to see it happen.
Can t possibly have been, they are just children and be ready for championship football until 35 at the earliest

Just what I was thinking AFC as I was reading this thread.
If they could not up the way we have been playing recently then god help us, people can say thorn this that or the other (my view on him is my view and I will stick to that) and no sudden upturn in form will change that, they should be performing better now, after all that's what they are paid for getting results.
There careers are at stake so they should be putting more fight into the game.
I also think things have changed since juke went, is this because we are not so 1 dimentional anymore?

I don't think there was ever a point where they didn't believe in themselves this season. That's what's impressed me most about the job Thorn's done.
He's carried them through all those last minute defeats and silly schoolboy errors and told them to keep plugging away; and most importantly for us they've never lost faith in him.

It's changed because we have been far more flexible in our approach to games since the turn of the year. Up to Christmas we were awful, playing one dimensional football which opposition read all too easily. Many games we lost by the odd goal and we were content to keep possession with no goal threat.
Since the turn of the year the team have mixed up formations and the possession is in more dangerous parts of the field. Other factors are important. The 2 signings have made a major difference and personally I think Clarke is one of our brightest prospects and offers real quality in the right back role. If we could have afforded to retain Juke and made the signings we did we would look a lot better. Platt over achieves but he scores few goals and age is against him.
I would also suspect the management team now consider the opposition and what they may or may not do to threaten us far more than we did earlier in the season.

It's a conclusion that has to be drawn from looking at the way they approach specific games both before and after the new year. It was the Blackpool game which Otis is referring to and that I suspect has led to a more all encompassing approach. Why be surprised anyway - managers operate differently some make dossiers on opposing teams and others don't.
The approach has clearly changed which is backed up by the formation changes we also now have seen in games.
It's actually not a negative about the manager - if you could but see it.

No I never believe players generally do not try. What made me smile was your cliche the boys are with him. I can only assume on our travels he is absent considering we have the worst away record in Britain and only 1 win under his tenure. Were they with him at Peterborough, milwall, forest, Barnsley? Had they fell out then?

One season and a tag given by Richard keys. At least they didn't lose 9 of the games played and it was a freak season. This is a trend over 12 months.

Yes the conclusion just HAS to be drawn doesn't it?! The change in formation can as much be put down to available personnel. For examle right now we don't have two wingers available so HAVE to play a narrower formation; I.e the diamond.

It's a bad away record - which I put down the the players bottling it: particularly the kids.
On the other hand I think the home record makes up for it.

The last 2 away performances give grounds for optimism that we are turning a corner there. However, anyone trying to fob the general terrible away form completely on SISU needs to have a look at those results and the way we set ourselves up in those games.

I think Thorne has done better of late ..... but surely you would expect that 49 games in charge wouldnt you ?
We all make mistakes and he has but he has also done some good things. No he hasnt had the money and that has tied his hands to a degree but thats a fact of life and at least there is still a club. On the plus side he has had to play the youngsters and that is good for our future, if they stay or even if we sell on. Would that have happened but for our situation financially? Playing the passing game is easier on the eye, but more importantly teaches the youngsters better habits. Still think we play too safe, and that is down to how AT wants the team to play, we have proven several times that when we go for it we can pick up much needed points. The problem I have with AT being manager this season is the amount he has had to learn to get to now - that could prove very costly.
I also have a problem with how the team can only play one reasonable half per game - that problem is contributed to by both the players and the manager (plus staff). That and the truly awful away form colours my assessment of AT. Not all his fault no but it is partly.
It isnt just down to AT or even SISU - it is more complex than that and everyone involved at CCFC is part of it. It most certainly is not about hating or loving Thorne because he is manager - I take a much more even handed assessment of his performance. I find the allocation to either thorne lovers or haters quite pathetic if truth be told. His inexperience, his mistakes, his on the job learning, could ultimately help cost us relegation. His style of play could keep us up. Doesnt make him a good or bad person or ultimately make him a good or bad manager - its just my assessment of what I see is.
Am I convinced by him as a manager no not yet.... there is just something about how he does things, how he sets the team up etc that i find frustrating and uninspiring - just my opinion

In a nutshell, after the game against Blackpool Thorn said Blackpool changed one or two things for the game that City were not expecting, one of those being the long diagonal ball over the top of our fullbacks. He said it whether you say 'no way' or not! If you recall they caught us out about 6 times with it. Once they scored we changed our formation to counter it.
Blackpool had been deploying that same tactic every single game for months. When Eakin asked the The BBC Blackpool commentator on CWR what the City should expect on the night before the game he said that this is one tactic of playing the ball over the top of the fullbacks they use every single game without fail and they had been having success with it.
Think last time I posted it on here someone came back with the defence of 'Thorn being a bit busy' and not having time to analyse opposition tactics.
Thorn said it. Interviewed by Geoff Foster after the game and said that, that tactic had caught City on the hop.

My point is that in all that time they were still putting in a shift. The results in those matches doesn't change that.
On a separate issue, I thought it was quite telling that we played far better in the 2nd half at Cardiff under the original diamond formation.
