But they weren't playing well as a partnership. Everyone was saying that. They were acres apart on the pitch. Hiwula and Chaplin seem to be playing a lot closer to each other for the most part.

They seem to have a better understanding and are creating opportunities for each other.

Chaplin is 21 and if we’d spent 500k on a 25-28 year old striker the claims levelled against him would be a lot more valid. Chaplin could have one good season of scoring 15+ goals and we’d be able to sell him for more a lot more than 500k. When buying young players, most of the fee is based on potential too. All of our team really ought to improve simply because they’re so young.

We need sign experienced players to take this team to the next level. But, we have a budget every year and we’re over that, so it’ll have to be in the off-season we fill out the squad. There’s a lot of talent but we lack in a couple of areas.

January might bring opportunities or serious questions for MR in do we stick with the young group and hope it grows over the season as he’s rightly shown enormous belief in them while also hoping he don’t lose two of the spine of the side this summer to free transfers and risk the potential to not be as good the following season.

How much does FFP restrict his thoughts to do a deal on existing players or January transfer options that can help the side over the next 18/24 months in moving forwards.

Football is a funny game for every Portsmouth building the right way is a Chesterfield or Leyton Orient where you might only get one real chance to utilise momentum before it crumbles away for varying reasons on and off the pitch.

(That said I fear for a ccfc side in the championship if the stars lined up again....)

Stoke have just been relegated from the Prem. We’ve just been promoted and have a young team. Totally different contexts.

At our worst, we were 14th and still about 3 points off 9th. We also had some rough home games in Luton, P’boro and Accrington (6th at the time) and lost once. Just two weeks a section of this forum was saying we were the only promoted team to have not improved over the summer and we were in crisis and all sorts of hyperbolic nonsense. Only Luton are above us from the promoted teams.

There was a great stat from Clive Eakin before the game on Saturday. This time last season we were 7th in League Two, before the Wycombe match we were 9th (now 8th) in League One. Therefore in the calendar year we have climbed 21 places. Robin’s Out. Simply not good enough.

Agree with this, great post.

I said from the start of the season, this team won't get promoted, but that next season with a years experience, and bonding, plus a couple more additions, we will be a real force. The young players are learning, and will undoubtedly benefit from the 9 game winless streak as much as they did from the winning streaks

From what Robins’ has said recently, the primary focus this window is the loan market, presumably because we spent a fair bit in the summer. He did say he wanted to ‘wheel and deal’, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens there.

The Portsmouth example is a good one, and as I mentioned in another thread, they lost twenty games last season. If we analyse this season, if we take our chances results would be very different; there’s Pompey, Sunderland, Fleetwood, P’boro, Walsall (and probably a few more) where missing chances cost us several points. It’s a young side, so they will frustrate us with a bit of inconsistency in form. I honestly don’t think the gap between us and the playoffs isn’t that large, but we’ll probably come short this season.

At this moment in time, I doubt both Willis and Burge will leave. Burge is probably the more likely to leave given a club like Wigan haven’t had a permanent goalie starting in 2 seasons and higher teams may want a sub goalkeeper. As for Willis, Rotherham is probably the highest placed team who’s shown solid interest. A team who seem to bounce between L1 and Championship, so he may want to chance a promotion run with us. I’m not totally cynical and don’t believe it will become purely a financial decision because most footballers genuinely care about their career. Burge and Willis have the right to weigh up their options.

If we have to sign more players, then so be it and that may set us back a season or two. However, I believe this fundamentally different to our first spell in L1 as we’re not signing rag tag players on short term contracts, but players on 3yr contracts. There’s undoubtedly more continuity I feel, so I’m not overly worried. However, in an ideal world, you’d keep as many of the players together as possible.

Personally I don’t see either being able to establish themselves in the championship but can see a club taking a punt for free in the summer for peanuts in championship terms.

The bottom line with all of our players is if they were any good, they wouldn't be playing in League 1.
And if by some chance we lucked upon someone genuinely outstanding for this league, we'd never hold on to them anyway.
Robins has obviously favoured defence in preference to attack. That's why we have such a pathetic goals for record (only 3 clubs worse than us) whereas we have a very decent goals against figure.
If we give more emphasis to attack, will our defensive record suffer? Probably.
That said, it would be might be more acceptable to the supporters.
I'd play two up front, especially at home, Chaplin with Baka or Biamou (when fit).
Or possibly substitute Ponticelli (when fit) for Chaplin. I believe he would be just as effective.
