I would like to see Hiwula & JCH.
But, since Hiwula and Chaplin have been partnered, which is just for 3 games, Hiwula has scored twice and Chaplin once. It clearly seems to be working and they do have some degree of an understanding building.

I think we need to persist with this duo for now at least and JCH has looked good coming off the bench. Seems to be working well.

Hiwula was unlucky not to be given a goal against Luton too. Would have been 3 in 3 for him. Quick maths.

When we won 5 in a row who were the two upfront then?

But they weren't playing well as a partnership. Everyone was saying that. They were acres apart on the pitch. Hiwula and Chaplin seem to be playing a lot closer to each other for the most part.

They seem to have a better understanding and are creating opportunities for each other.

Chaplin is 21 and if we’d spent 500k on a 25-28 year old striker the claims levelled against him would be a lot more valid. Chaplin could have one good season of scoring 15+ goals and we’d be able to sell him for more a lot more than 500k. When buying young players, most of the fee is based on potential too. All of our team really ought to improve simply because they’re so young.

We need sign experienced players to take this team to the next level. But, we have a budget every year and we’re over that, so it’ll have to be in the off-season we fill out the squad. There’s a lot of talent but we lack in a couple of areas.

This is where I’m at with this young side who we’ve been on a wonderful journey in the last 18 months with. It’s the capabilities on its day when all individuals are on song doing the varying bits and pieces right together but when a few are off their game or it’s not happening with players it shows and the holes appear that can be papered over.

We’re so very close this season to being a good resilient side with the addition of the right experience, or key additions in areas we need that bit more depth and quality.

January might bring opportunities or serious questions for MR in do we stick with the young group and hope it grows over the season as he’s rightly shown enormous belief in them while also hoping he don’t lose two of the spine of the side this summer to free transfers and risk the potential to not be as good the following season.

How much does FFP restrict his thoughts to do a deal on existing players or January transfer options that can help the side over the next 18/24 months in moving forwards.

Football is a funny game for every Portsmouth building the right way is a Chesterfield or Leyton Orient where you might only get one real chance to utilise momentum before it crumbles away for varying reasons on and off the pitch.

(That said I fear for a ccfc side in the championship if the stars lined up again....)

Stoke have just been relegated from the Prem. We’ve just been promoted and have a young team. Totally different contexts.

At our worst, we were 14th and still about 3 points off 9th. We also had some rough home games in Luton, P’boro and Accrington (6th at the time) and lost once. Just two weeks a section of this forum was saying we were the only promoted team to have not improved over the summer and we were in crisis and all sorts of hyperbolic nonsense. Only Luton are above us from the promoted teams.
There was a great stat from Clive Eakin before the game on Saturday. This time last season we were 7th in League Two, before the Wycombe match we were 9th (now 8th) in League One. Therefore in the calendar year we have climbed 21 places. Robin’s Out. Simply not good enough.

I don't know I think it changed, but including the 1-1 draw after the 5 wins; Hiwula scored 3, Bakayoko 2, Chaplin 2, Bayliss 1, Doyle 1, JCH 1.

Agree with this, great post.

I said from the start of the season, this team won't get promoted, but that next season with a years experience, and bonding, plus a couple more additions, we will be a real force. The young players are learning, and will undoubtedly benefit from the 9 game winless streak as much as they did from the winning streaks

From what Robins’ has said recently, the primary focus this window is the loan market, presumably because we spent a fair bit in the summer. He did say he wanted to ‘wheel and deal’, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens there.

The Portsmouth example is a good one, and as I mentioned in another thread, they lost twenty games last season. If we analyse this season, if we take our chances results would be very different; there’s Pompey, Sunderland, Fleetwood, P’boro, Walsall (and probably a few more) where missing chances cost us several points. It’s a young side, so they will frustrate us with a bit of inconsistency in form. I honestly don’t think the gap between us and the playoffs isn’t that large, but we’ll probably come short this season.

For me, stick with young squad all day long. We’ve got them tied down to long term contracts and because they’re young they ought to develop and get better. However, going forward we need to get players with experience in the squad. In the summer we’ll need a right back, two wingers and a central midfielder at the very least.

And the reality of maybe a keeper and central defender it seems.

For me the task becomes a bigger one possibly this summer than what may be achieved now this window.

Lots of If’s buts and maybes to consider.

At this moment in time, I doubt both Willis and Burge will leave. Burge is probably the more likely to leave given a club like Wigan haven’t had a permanent goalie starting in 2 seasons and higher teams may want a sub goalkeeper. As for Willis, Rotherham is probably the highest placed team who’s shown solid interest. A team who seem to bounce between L1 and Championship, so he may want to chance a promotion run with us. I’m not totally cynical and don’t believe it will become purely a financial decision because most footballers genuinely care about their career. Burge and Willis have the right to weigh up their options.

If we have to sign more players, then so be it and that may set us back a season or two. However, I believe this fundamentally different to our first spell in L1 as we’re not signing rag tag players on short term contracts, but players on 3yr contracts. There’s undoubtedly more continuity I feel, so I’m not overly worried. However, in an ideal world, you’d keep as many of the players together as possible.

Loanees - yet another example of fan bollox, as shown by the following statements heard .
"I hate loanees we should be building a squad"
"Sterling was MOTM" or "Thomas was MOTM"

We could easily go to three loanees from the current two. Winger is a good position to recruit loanees for as there are are very few mature wingers available. Centre-halves easier to find

Very interesting to see what the reaction would be on here should MR cash in on Burge, Willis or both this month if a respectable offer falls and he’s pretty sure they will be off come the summer.

Can we afford to let them walk for free, should we take a few hundred thousand for one to help finance a deal for the other....or are they still of significant value staying on till May on the pitch.

Personally I don’t see either being able to establish themselves in the championship but can see a club taking a punt for free in the summer for peanuts in championship terms.

Has missed his last 25 chances......more of a sprinter than a footballer, but struggles to stand up, so probably suited to neither. Fucking fuming

How much did he cost? We spend 800k on Chaplin and bakayoko, plus him. That is probably about a million maybe more, which is nearly mcnulty money. I just don’t get it

Lol. He was on a hiding to nothing today playing as the 1 up front and then shunted out to the left, felt a bit sorry for him. Didn’t suit him at all, especially with Bright dropping so deep. He’s a good player who, like seemingly everyone remotely attack-minded at the club at the moment, lacks confidence in front of goal.

Wrong completely wrong, he's dreadful ! Ability to hold the ball up is zero, positional awareness is laughable, workrate is shite.....he's shit !

I love how lacking confidence can be used as an excuse for missing appallingly easy sitters.

Hes on his own upfront. Never gonna be 1 to win headers

We didnt play any good passes infront of him bit he did chase down defenders and keepers

He showed for ball with mixed results. Sometimes held up well sometimes rolled over boot

Chsnces wise you cant blame him for a blocked shot where shipley should have shot originally anyway. And one in box that he fsiled to control is a lil hsrsh too imo

21yo? I like him personally and hsve faith in him

Don’t think he really missed any sitters today. Only the 1 blocked shot I can think of. Baka’s 2nd was horrendous though, not even close

Thought you meant Baka? Apologies. Though Hiwulla against AFC was the leading contender this season, even better than anything Craplin can offer

The bottom line with all of our players is if they were any good, they wouldn't be playing in League 1.
And if by some chance we lucked upon someone genuinely outstanding for this league, we'd never hold on to them anyway.
Robins has obviously favoured defence in preference to attack. That's why we have such a pathetic goals for record (only 3 clubs worse than us) whereas we have a very decent goals against figure.
If we give more emphasis to attack, will our defensive record suffer? Probably.
That said, it would be might be more acceptable to the supporters.
I'd play two up front, especially at home, Chaplin with Baka or Biamou (when fit).
Or possibly substitute Ponticelli (when fit) for Chaplin. I believe he would be just as effective.

Of all the three current strikers Hiwula for me is most talented. That doesn't say much. But he's played out of position most of his games. Come off as sub most of the time too. Scored a variety of goals. Some with e excellent technique like volley vs Doncaster.

Add to that He has a decent goalscoring record in this league.

Find it strange, but i have my own thoughts why Hiwula and Baka get more stick than Chaplin. Hmmm

If he could stand up things would be better for him, not sure we give any of the strikers many decent chances as we are so negative in midfield. We also don’t get many goals from the middle of midfield and the defence.

Bayliss always looks capable of scoring.

Thomas is as wasteful as the strikers.
