What do you guys thing about this latest controversy? A black actor has been chosen for a black role, which you would think would be acceptable. But according to critics, he is too light-skinned! Are we now going to have 'degrees of blackness' and they can only choose someone from the correct group. Seems like it's becoming ridiculous. And this leads to the question, can you be too black for a role that requires a light-skinned black person, or does it only work the other way round?

Darker skinned people as in certain communties looked down upon by lighter skinned people of same race. Lighter skinned are also seen as more attractive by mainstream media and thus light skinned actor taking the role is like taking a great opporuntity away from a very dark skinned actor who will not get the chance.

think a black DJ(jameela something) got in hot water about this too and had to apologise for dissing dark skinned women.

You don't see too many ugly people on TV or in films.
Even in a film based on a real person, they always choose an actor who is better looking than the person really was.
Shouldn't ugly people get an opportunity at those roles?

Where does it end though? Back years ago you had made-up white people playing Asian and Black roles and there was a backlash against that. Nowadays you will never see that. It's always an Asian or a black person. Now the protests are it's the wrong kind of Asian or a person not black enough. Straight actors are no longer allowed to play gay roles whereas we all know gay people have always played straight roles in the past.

Maybe I'm being naive, but I would expect the role to go to the best person for the job. When Idris Elba was being touted for the role of James Bond, traditionally played by a white man, there was no outcry over his colour, because he was seen as a great candidate. Surely the only way to get rid of racism is to stop persecuting people for the colour of their skin and judge them solely on their merits, yet in this case it seems that some black people are judging other black people for not being black enough. Like I said, perhaps I'm stupid, but I don't see how this type of behaviour helps defeat racist attitudes. Surely this only fosters more hatred and bigotry rather than less?
