Seeing as he voted BXP at the EU elections, I would guess Brexit and deregulation. He’s had a good working life, is comfortably well off and has a decent pension. Workers rights and a successful EU for the future of younger people are the very last things on Grendel’s list of priorities.

The EU leaders simply say: ALL shipping is at risk here. It is in our own best interests to protect international shipping in international waters - every EU nation with a naval fleet can send one vessel to operate under the existing UK command in the gulf.
As it is, they have been quietly discussing it & at least some have decided they have little or no interest in making it happen. Others are scared of being (falsely) aligned with the US & impeding negotiations with Iran, & others saying the EU should send a task force with the same aim as the UK suggested - but they seem to want German & French (& UK of course) navies to do the dirty work.
So they DO have the means. What they lack is the will (until one of their own vessels is involved)!

The navies with capability are the British, French and German. You really don’t expect e.g. Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Austria or Luxemburg to send ships... or do you?

You do know that they DO have a history of protecting shipping don't you? Operation Atalanta which is ongoing & not just EU naval ships either. A bit like how they operate under the UN flag. So the question is, why is piracy off the Somali coast unacceptable to the EU whereas it is in the Gulf? Hang-on, it's a British ship isn't? No need to do anything then!

What is there to negotiate about? 28 countries including the UK agreed a deal. It took 3 years to get this far and the WA includes the backstop which the UK originally wanted. After the UK have fxxked off, what then?
You are showing that the EU isn’t a state, doesn’t possess a navy and is not Merkel‘s 4 Reich or the EUSSR where the state orders vassal states to send ships. How many ships do Austria or Luxemburg have out of interest which could be made to take part?

No point in wasting time or more Money Mart - Maybots agreement was just handing over the right to change the rules to the EU - just my opinion that we should get on with no deal and should there be a change along the way then ok but let’s give our industries something solid for planning

Except. We haven’t covered most of our exports with roll over trade deals. We need time and negotiating skills. We are in a weak position as we need to do deals and everyone knows that.
When we have left, the idea is that we negotiate a trade deal. The EU has already said they will insist on the money, citizens rights and the backstop being agreed. How long will this all take. More prolonged uncertainty. I can’t see why the USA will give us a good deal knowing that we are out on our own.

I agree with this Mart. The transition period is more important than a lot of people think (for those wider considerations ie rolling over trade agreements, starting negotiations (but not signing) trade agreements etc. It also means we can hedge our bets a bit. If trade talks with US, Canada etc aren’t going well, we could focus on more on an EU customs union/arrangement in the trade talks and this can form part of our wider negotiations. A No Deal (which Boris doesn’t want) puts us in a weak position around the world.
What I don’t understand though is if the withdrawal agreement isn’t amended and it ends up being an accidental No deal, then the EU/Ireland end up with exactly what the backstop was put in place to avoid ?!
So why not try to find a sensible compromise that might get through Parliament?!

On the contrary we're praying that we're wrong so that things don't get worse in our own country. The clown is already angling to blame the EU for the mess we created and should we eventually get out with or without a deal and there is no land of milk and honey, who does he blame next? What will be cut next to pay for the no deal contingency plans?

Boris said he won’t negotiate until the backstop is removed. The EU don’t want a border in Ireland. One of their members is a signatory of the GFA. If a border comes because of non regulatory alignment, then the EU will be blamed which suits Boris.

Luckily Brexit has now more or less disappeared from the news here. Well yesterday there was a feature on its impact upon the pound and how it’s a great time to go shopping in a London.
Those who swallow Johnson’s rhetoric of blaming the EU really are beyond help. His promises in 2016 were a hell of a long way from reality, it’s depressing that even now some are being taken in by him.

They don’t have a plan, it seems to revolve around not taking responsibility for anything and weirdly, the power of positive thinking.
In the end, No deal is clearly their preferred option.
