The Times had an article at the weekend about how in the UK the average house price is 8 times the average wage, highest ratio in Europe. In France it’s about 4 times the average wage IIRC.

I saw it, can't remember the timescale of the graph but UK and Canada have gone through the roof.

Think it was from the early 70’s until today. Basically a snapshot of the last 50 years. You need to cancel a hell of a lot of Netflix subscriptions to make up the difference between the UK and our European neighbours.

looks like a big spike since 2010 which was post financial crisis (not sure if that’s relevant or not) and following large population growth in U.K. (5m)

Germany and France have only grown by about 2m each and Italy decreased by 1m since 2010.

Since 2000 we’ve grown by almost 9m, Germany by about 1m (basically their population has flatlined), France by 6m and Italy by 2m. Canadas population has also jumped about 5m since 2010. They’ve also seen a massive spike in house prices.

Who would’ve thought when demand outstrips supply, prices shoot up 🤷‍♂️.It won’t be the only reason but follow the lines and there’s a reasonable correlation

Edit - that wasn’t a sarcastic comment to you SBT, more generally that people are surprised at the increases when demand has grown so much

Correct. The actual figures are worse than I presented them from memory. Well spotted. Probably explains why Astutes daughter can afford to get on the housing ladder in France. I’m sure you’ll agree.

No it’s income ratio - house prices in the uk soared in the 70’s as did wages

Surely this is what you are referring to isn’t it?

Point out any time the same old people don't gang up and attack anyone who dares to say anything different to what is allowed to be said freely? Just like right now.
I genuinely don't see any ganging up or attacking. I don't write stuff on here because it's a pile on - I write it because I believe it and I think the same is true of others. It's individuals making the same points because they have similar beliefs. And it's largely written as debate - challenging your opinions and offering different ones. Just as you are. When you replied to my message was that you offering a different opinion, or were you attacking me? I'm fine with you disagreeing and challenging stuff, just don't be surprised or offended when people disagree and challege what you write.

Many on here have said that the EU was never perfect and needed to change. But leaving it was not the way to bring that about or improve our own situation.

My guess would be most Tory voters would vote leave. Then the Labour voters would be split. That would hand it to the Tories.

How about those who voted leave because of the millions who came to the UK to live? Labour didn't build houses last time. They actually speeded up the right to buy as well so the poorer of us couldn't afford any of the remaining properties. This continues to push house prices up even when most can't afford it.

What also gets ignored is the trouble that comes with criminals that moved here. Top headlines used to be a seal stranded on the beach or somebody got caught with a bit of weed. About 5 years ago people started to get moved here as house prices and rent was cheap. People never knew about the place as its 45 minutes from the motorway. 1 road in and out. Now it is all drugs, stabbings and murders. We have nearly caught up with the rest of the UK. There was even a stabbing in the school that my youngest two would have been in if they never left the UK. But all this is ignored with those who have an opinion that it was all about the lies from the politicians. And you won't like me saying but they lied on both sides. I don't trust politicians on all sides now. We can't even come up with a candidate better than Starmer and many don't seem to want him either.

Then some wonder why it's been downhill for the UK for years 🙄
I think some of that is fair, but also only tells a part of the story.

Millions came here, but we also have huge immigration from outside the EU which leaving would have no effect on. That was pretty much overlooked by the leave campaign, and there's no way they weren't aware of it. So that's at best economical with the truth. And that's before we get to the outright lies like nations hammering at the door for trade deals, how we'd see benefits straight away and how we'd have loads more money for public services like the NHS.

And yes, there are some criminal elements that have come over, but there have been far more non-criminal. People who abide by the law, work and pay their taxes. And those are the people who are more likely to stop coming here because criminals quite famously try to flout the law. We've got a crisis in nursing due to limits on immigration. And it's hardly like we were a crime-free utopia before in the 60's and 70's. The area I work in you get far more trouble from the families that are from the area. And that's not saying that the 'locals' are bad. The vast majority are lovely people. But the same is true of immigrants - the vast majority are very nice. So should we put massive restrictions on the local people due to the terrible behaviour of a tiny number of them as is being suggested with immigrants? It's throwing the baby out with the bathwater, except you'll likely end up retaining more bathwater than baby.

How can any house in France be 60,000 Euros?
Put in Google cheap house for sale France. This was on the first link it gave

Coulonges is a lovely place. Stunning rivers nearby. 3 bed semi already renovated. Also has a large barn. Over half an acre. €59,600. £52,600 to you. We're in the process of buying a house nearby. Just outside Coulonges is a lake with man made beach. They have a waterslide open there half the year that is free to use. We go canoeing there. For the fisherman it holds carp bigger than you get in the UK. €79 for a season ticket.

I'm talking about Labour voters. The problem we usually have with Labour is there are two sides to the party.

Those that are so left they nearly fall off the edge. They never listen to anything except their ideals. They will never get voted in as those from the middle all the way to the right would never vote for them.

Then you have the more moderate rest. They can get the vote of the normal Tory voters who are disillusioned. But we have a major problem. Those I stated above seem to hate the thought of them nearly as much as the Tories. So we then have constant slanging matches. This pushes those unsure back to the Tories. And I'm not on about this site. I'm on about the UK as a whole.

Wee Krankie has done Labour a massive favour by going against what the vast majority wants. We will gain a lot of votes in Scotland. But we have a major problem. Rayner is shouting for the same that Wee krankie proposed. If she continues a lot of people yet again will see us as unvotable.

And those on the far left of the party will either back her or seem not to care. And I will yet again be accused of being a Tory for pointing it out.
They hate them more as they are supposed to be pure but are now impure for not being socialist enough

Well that's just depressing!

For what I paid for my house I can get a 6 bedroom manor with 15 acres of land over there

Perhaps you should join him over there

Not depressing for us. It is why I can finally join my wife and kids next month. Couldn't afford to retire at my age in the UK.

The house we're presently buying is stunning. It is our forever home. Even has a bedroom and bathroom downstairs for when we get old. One of the rooms downstairs is 68m2. Stone built house with all walls nicely having the stonework and rendering on show. House is so big it has 2 single doors, 2 double (french doors ) and a triple door at the front. The downstairs alone is larger than the average UK home. Average size garden for France of just over half an acre. Lovely area. And all for the massive price of €88,000 which is about £76,000 at todays exchange rate.

And €8,000 of that price is estate agent fees as they charge 10% on any property under €100,000 🙄

Oh and forgot to say...equivalent of our council tax will be about €650 a year.

why is it so cheap when average prices are the same here

To be fair you could buy a 7 bedroom house in Haverfordwest west a couple of years ago for £80 grand so I suppose it’s location location location

You have already been told about the house prices outside the towns and cities. Paris is at least as expensive as London. Most cities are expensive. Then nearly the whole South Coast is also very expensive. But most young French people don't want to live in rural locations so the demand is much lower. Less demand = lower prices. The wages are also much lower in the rural locations. They also want to live in new houses.

Our nearest two cities are an hour away. Past them you have Bordeaux just over 2 hours away. We're about 80km from the west coast. Won't find a lot there for under €300,000.

Location is the same anywhere in the world. But it isn't what you're trying to say. Very safe where we are. Saw more arrests in Liverpool yesterday in 10 minutes than I've seen locally in France. Just seen one. Someone was drunk and asleep in a church flower bed. Very rarely see a Gendarme. They don't need them as hardly anything happens.

Starmer got Sunak over a barrel at PMQ’s on Northern Ireland. Funny thing is he’s just essentially asking questions on behalf of the ERG and DUP in reality.

He’s also just pledged in parliament to lend Sunak the votes to get it through also.

My Eurostar is just about to go back from Paris. A man looking in his mid 50s has -scrambled aboard handing out pamphlets for ‘La Belle Vie’ retirement village in Calais-tossed a nice Brie my way before being escorted off.
