I then make the point that it’s not Remainers (who get told they are doing the knocking) who want large scale change of the UK, implying they are actually OK with the UK and the ones “knocking” it are Leavers.

Labour planned £10 for 2020 I think? The Tories are planning £10.50 by 2024 so about a 5% increase year on year. The headline may make both offers sound similar but they're not. The Tories also have form for announcing similar (£9 by 2020 for example) which won't happen.

Actually the manifesto merely states that they would increase the NMW to the Living Wage (which is expected to be at least £10 by 2020). It doesn’t say whether they would do this immediately or whether it would be phased in.

Not losing anything over this. I don't accept it as a good thing anymore now, than I did when Labour announced similar.
In the end it sets up a spiralling of inflation to pay for it, pay rises for those in the middle to redress their pay differential, & will leave the lowest paid back at square 1...being unable to afford to live properly just like they are now.

Parking the increase to one side, the important thing for me is removing the separate 21-24 year old band. For lower paid jobs there shouldn’t be a discrepancy whether you are 21 or 40....in actual fact there might well be a fair few where you’d happily pay a younger person more (I know you’re not allowed...it’s ageist)

Worth pointing out that in reality the increase is roughly what it’s been the last couple of years anyway, and I’ll believe the Tories have suddenly become the workers party when I see it quite frankly. Same as if Corbyn suddenly came out with a massive defence plan.
Yeah, no issue with 18 either. If they’re good enough to land the job then why not. Apprentices are a different case though as they’ll be being trained, course costs covered etc

As long as they’re actual apprenticeships that lead to a decently paid, skilled job, I’m fine with that. TBH I’d have a vocational version of uni with student grants and better esteem for trade skills. But that’s another conversation.

Far better than shovelling 50% of kids into uni, apprenticeships + is a good way forward (for individuals and country)

Couldn’t agree more. Uni should go back to being for the 25%ish it’s actually suitable for, everyone else should get the offer of business startup support or vocational on the job training (and the latter should include stuff like police and nurses as well as software engineering that really don’t need a degree).
And you should be able to bank it for later on in life. I could talk forever about post 18 education though.

Said it before - we need to get rid of the stigma of 'two tier' education from things like grammar/comprehensive all the way up to uni/vocational training/apprenticeships. Both are extremely valuable tools in obtaining skills and getting people to reach their potential, just a different method to suit the individual
It is branched, not tiered. Only reason it's seen as tiered is because in the past it gave those fortunate enough to go to uni (usually due to where the were schooled rather than ability) an excuse to earn more.

It's certainly created a different dynamic. For some relatively "lower" type jobs, because there are so many uni students, employers are looking for a degree just to get on the starting line. If 50% of young people have a degree of sorts, then this is a useful filter to exclude the other 50%. Never used to be the case. With crap "O levels I was able to get an Engineering apprenticeship. Was able to work my way up, competing with BSc's and Honours colleagues to eventually become Head of R&D for a world-wide manufacturer. My education would not now even get me the lowest job in the department.

I don't disagree but the problem with that is that universities are big commercial organisations and provide a significant numbers of people with jobs, and, given that the Tories in particular are determined to make the UK unattractive for why foreigner the students are going to have to come from somewhere.

I don’t see why they can’t do things like Cov Uni College and the WMG Academy but with the funding and quality of Degree courses TBH. Just because it’s not a degree or structured like a degree doesn’t mean it doesn’t need delivering by someone. And we’ve basically killed off most of FE at this point so it may as well be HE.
