I find it hard to see the argument that restricting candidacy widens the potential pool of quality candidates. I have the same issues with AWS and an insistence that candidates have “done their time” in local parties.

Seeing some of the headlines this morning is interesting. Some saying that he’s said that he will punish the Tories and some saying that he’s said that he’ll punish Labour.
The truth is a little of both. The “experts” say that for every seat he takes off Labour he’ll take two of the Tories. However he’s set his stool out that Boris’ deal isn’t leave which means that he’s put himself in a position where if he only fights labour seats he’ll be making a huge U turn, not new territory for Ferage but this will be the quickest in history.

Social media scouring is not good for democracy IMO. Are we only going to elect people who have either got the technical know how to nuke their history or are so weird they’ve never done anything even slightly controversial online?

Maybe I'm hardened from years of GMK, but it doesn't really seem that bad, anyway.
I can understand hardcore racism or homophobia is newsworthy, but that really did seem off the cuff. Tasteless to some, no doubt, but not worthy of scrutiny when there are far worse actions being investigated elsewhere!

Yeah I thought the same about a lot of the Jared O’Mara stuff as well. Just normal forum banter. But taken out of context and put in print it always looks bad. Like when they take one joke from a comedians set and make it look terrible.
To be clear O’Mara is a terrible MP in his own right.

I don't do social media including Farcebook. Don't need to see people I know having a meltdown, save a dog every week, look at a drink with the sea behind it, look at what someone is having for their dinner and I certainly see enough of the Brexit bullshit on here to know how biased both sides are.

I believe this. Lots of family and friends vote labour but gave UKIP a shot that time round. Many I speak to would vote Boris to finally get Brexit done, but a decent campaign from Farage would probably sway them that way. Real shame because the Labour principles are being overlooked due to the dithering around ... most think JC is a clown.

I do like Boris and the way he goes about his business however do i trust him with Brexit???? He's had his hands tied though....

Like UKIP, Brexit Ltd will take votes from both.
They won't get enough to win (m)any seats but enough to potentially affect a constituency outcome. I expect the same of LD the other way. 2015 Labour actually saw a bigger increase in percentage of voters but that was probably a mix of gaining from LD and losing to UKIP, but the same is true of the Tories.
But if all this is true why was he trying to get a pact with the Tories? He has said he doesn't like Alexander's Brexit deal, so why would he want to help them? Is he trying to butter them up now to get his harder Brexit?
Also shows the ego of the man that he chose 2015 when he was in charge for the reason they did well rather than policy, compared to 2017 when he wasn't and they fell back. Proves it's a personality cult around him. He's a snake oil salesman.

Who did they vote for in 2017? That’s what interests me. 2015 was very different for lots of reasons (hadn’t had the referendum, no Corbyn, no BXP, etc).

Dunno mate, think many had a Brenda moment and didn't bother. Policital discussion isn't a main topic in our ciricle, other than moaning about "what the Goverments doing now". I know nobody would have gone Lib dem as they'd already wanted to reverse the ref even back then. FWIW, historical roots and working in public sector I've always seen red ... it's a dilemma.
